There are four games in the pipeline I am looking forward to playing: SWTOR, GW2, TSW, and Neverwinter. These are all very different types of games, granted, but I think in some ways I am looking forward to Neverwinter the most.  It sounds, of all of these games, like the truest successor to GW1 in terms of game structure (i.e., it's a heavily instanced CORPG with Heroes, just like GW1), and GW1 is one of the most enjoyable online games I've ever played.

The ability for players to create content, the D&D/Neverwinter IP, the CORPG structure, the instancing. Damn. Neverwinter sounds just about perfect. Yeah, it's Cryptic, I know, and depth/story are not their strong suit. But, still, Neverwinter sounds like a lot of fun to me. I am looking forward to it.

A few questions pop into my head whenever a PnP game goes MMO.  Initiative rolls and rounds will probably be non-existant.  DDO and CO do not have them, and Cryptic Studios did CO.

Another question is which version of DnD?  Will it be a bastardized version like NWN games, or an actual 4.0?

User Generated Content: Isn't this the way to get content without paying for it?  Take a long look at any rewards offered and compare them to a programmer's and writer's salaries.

I look askance at this announcement and don't expaect much.  Just my personal thoughts on this development.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

There's nothing wrong with CO at all. It is what it is; a more casual, social, character concept inspired MMO. The actual depth of character creation (on gold accounts) is far more freedom than you get in most other level based MMOs and your character creation system is fantastic. I spend a lot of time just chatting with people about comics and character costumes.

The game is fun for people who enjoy a casual, social atmosphere, character creation, and for people who like comic books. It isn't intended to be some deep, all-consuming MMORPG.

I did a trial run of CO years back thinking I would play the game for 10 minutes like every other MMO out in the market since 2004 and uninstall it within the day. Couple years later I still play, have a lot of different character concepts, and still have a good time. But it's not a game I live on - it was never made for that.

I'll give it a go, I'm interested in seeing how Cryptics campaign plays out and what the community adds to that campaign.

I agree that they are going to have to do something to control the content players create, I'm sure there will be those that try their best to add inappropriate dialogue etc, and then even those that completely try to overwhelm players with impossible rooms full of baddies, maybe even to the point of trying to crash the player/game.

Have to admit I do not have lots of faith in cryptic after star trek, but I am super geeked for this game. NwN the orignal that bioware made was one of my fav all time games. This also like NwN has the ablity to create new adventures player made. Just can not wait I signed up for newsletter as soon as I saw this.

NwN the one that bioware made had tons of player made content, and it was one of the best games ever.

I'm playing NWN2 while I browse this. There's probably no way that the two will ever compare. It does look pretty, but I'm guessing it's going to be more familiar to an XBox Gears of War player than to the PC Neverwinter Nights franchise player.

Why do I say this? Well, it's D&D 4th edition, which is already focusing towards continued and pressing action. Wizards no longer need to prepare a week ahead of time for a campaign, they just put on their robe and hat and go to town blasting everything.

Sounds like a great concept, but Cryptic is making this game. So there you go.

Since Cryptic is being run by someone competant now, I have high hopes.

I'm amazed at how little excitement and hype I have for this game.

Absolutely love NWN1&2 along with all it's expansions, but I just have such little faith in this one. The only thing it seems to resemble to what I loved about the previous games is it's setting (which no doubt will be unrecognizable beyond having it's name).

Everything else, simply put, just seems like it would be better suited to a different name-sake and they're only using it's name to help drive some interest.

NWN imo should stay in the single-player realm in order to hold it's integrity and importance. MMO's are much too rushed and fast paced to offer it any sort of justice.

Even though they are claiming for this to be more of a multi-player experience than MMO it still just sounds like a bunch of disjointed instanced dungeon spam without the attachment of a well paced and greatly involving story.

What i'm picturing resembles more to DDO than any NWN game, and i'm pretty sure that is the goal.

Are you seriously kidding me? CS somehow still got the contract to do Neverwinter after all the bologne they created over the past few years and failed to make anything worth paying for? Atari has completely lost their mind and any respect I may have had left for them. Completely unbelievable.

Also, as far as the screenshots go. CS has quite the history of doctoring screenshots for the press and I severely doubt the real graphics look anywhere near what the screenshots look like.

Sounds like you're the type to just buy canned D&D modules instead of making your own campaigns up.

Haven't you ever talked to an NPC and thought .... I wish it would go like X?  Instead of the why the Dev's took the quest?  Well it sure sounds like this is your chance

    SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter

    I'm "so" in.

this is exactly the way dungeons and dragons should be.

This is what DDO should hvae had in my opinion.

The reason single player rpg's like neverwinter nights are fun is because there isn't this rush to max level like every mmo in the market today.

heck even old mmo's try to rush you to max level now.. i resubbed eq a couple weeks ago and they got all sorts of exp bonus gimmicks now in the game and other stuff to make you get to max level faster.

I think a well designed mmo you wouldn't feel required to be max level so you can play the game and have fun..

A mmo should be fun to play and have relevent events/content for people of a variety of levels.

I don't consider grind and fetch quests content either >_>

It looks and sounds great...... but its Cryptic. I can only expect a bland and hollow experience really.

The Foundry sounds good but again if the core game is naff all the amazing modules in the world will not save it.

  • depaindepain Member Posts: 263

    It's Cryptic. Prepare to...

#1. Pay for the box game.

    #2. Pay a monthly subscription.

#3. Pay for the cool aesthetic items and races through a cash shop.

Cryptic, IMO, delivers very little and asks for much.

    E3 2011: Neverwinter Overview

The D&D setting of Neverwinter is one of the most beloved locations ever created. Cryptic Studios has taken on the monumental task of creating an MMO based in and around the city of Neverwinter.

wow very misleading. NW is NOT A MMO

this has been said so many times already. You go into this thinking its a MMO, you are only going to disappoint yourself.

The only part that will be of any value will be the player generated content and that'll be narrow scoped assest .  This game was designed by Cryptic's own admission within a 24 mo window . To see the player generated content in action borrow someone's account , if you can, at STO.  It sounds better then it is. Oh and less we forget , the C-Store will be a key element to the functioning and play of this game.I wouldn't touch this game at any price.

The one spot on which I can hope that this will be different is the fact that it's called Neverwinter. If the NWN and NWN2 modding communities get onboard with this game, the custom content could be epic. The NWN1 community especially was amazing, and some of the storylines they came up with were better than what Bioware produced.

It irks me a great deal that Cryptic of all the .............. company's out there is the one to deliver this game.

I will probably wait 3-4 months and see how people react to it over time.

    Pretty much "this".

I think that's where cryptic has its downfall.

If they were to instead create "online multiplayer games" and leave off the whole mmo moniker I think players would be a bit less judgmental.

For instance, I had a lot of fun in Champions. I found nothing wrong with it. But if I were to really compare it to any hardcore mmo  I would then be able to find fault.

so people "must" shift their gears and realize that Neverwinter is "NOT" an mmo. Not. No. Not. At all.
