small quote that makes you think

this is a general life quote but i put it on the MMORPG topics because if you think about it this is the problem with the "new age" MMOs that are comming out (and will come out)

*i hope the copy paste will work

"Everyone Wants Better. No One Wants Change"

image Adam Dachis — Jonathan Fields points out that often times we're only interested in the result and want to ignore the hard work it takes to get it. The internet has created a culture based on immediacy, and that is good in many ways, but sometimes the hard way isbetter. Being healthy and happy isn't just a decision to make. It takes concentrated, ongoing effort. It's easy to see the hard stuff as bad, but it rarely is. Even positive change may be stressful, but it's going to be better.

Lol. Yes, god forbid that people should desire such trivial thing like fun from their MMORPG gaming image

@OP: in the same line of thought, 'people want the destination, but not the journey towards it'

When it comes to MMORPG's, I think the following is true as well: people want change, but not too much change. And people want things to stay the same, but not too much the same.

How much change and how much the same differs from one person to the next, but it's always a mix. It depends on with how happy they are with what they have and their comfort zone.

Ah well, you know how it is.

Predictable comments deserve predictable replies image

Jaded, burnt out MMO drifters who're not able to enjoy  MMO's anymore and hang around MMO forums to vent their dissatisfaction and unhappiness continuously with no change in tone should receive the same kind of replies over and over again. At least until they realise that they've grown out of touch with MMO's and MMO gaming entirely and that they're wasting their time, or until they have a change of heart or mind and start looking at things differently, don't you think? image

I mean, there's only so much grinching that the MMO homeless can do in the end.

Back on topic, after looking at the OP a second time, I'm not sure how 'work' can be related to MMO gaming particularly, it isn't as if it's like losing weight or getting your high grades where you have to work for.

work as in the development of an MMO, hard work meaning to try to develop something harder than the copy paste of the MMO systems we have now. investors and developpers do not want to put in the hard work required to make something great because they think it is not worth the risk of loosing all that money invested. so instead they go for the gimme gimme crowd and make things they like, because that is garanteed money back.

same thing happened with the cash shops. people want everything now and are willing to pay for it, so of course investors have $ signs in their eyes so they give and give for the "new age" gamers that "gime gime"

money wise, certain return of investment and more, good course of action

gaming wise, lower content quality and mechanics, bad course of action

@Metentso: I like playing all kinds of MMO's and I like discussing them, since it's a genre I'm interested in and am having fun with.

If I liked knitting, I would hang around knitting forums, but I don't like knitting.

I mean, it'd be pretty stupid to hang around forums of a hobby that one is having no fun with at all now, wouldn't it?

Whether it's knitting or baseball or MMO's, what kind of persons would do that?

But that's where the similarity ends with the quote in the OP, I think.

In that quote, the person who wants the change is the same one who needs to do the work for it but doesn't want to do the work, only the wished result. While the MMO industry with which you use the quote on and according to your explanation, the people who want the change are MMO gamers while the ones who need to do the work are the devs. Two different groups.

Fun, fun, and nothing but fun. I'm getting older now, and I have so many more responsibilities. My free time shall only be spent having fun, fun, fun.

Mmorpgs could have been so much more than cheap thrills and rip off payment plans. But, at least they are fun.
