I thought it'd be nice to list all the possible rankings or titles that you can see, for those who've been wondering about them.
First you have the automatic system, where your rank is influenced by your activity in the last month since current date. Only the last month counts, so if you'd have 5 starts and you're on holidays a month, you'll notice that you're back to no stars again on return. It's not clear defined what action each influences this ranking exactly how much, but regular visiting of the site and posting (although posting may have less impact than you might think) will affect it positively, and periods of not visiting the site, having your posts deleted and modded will negatively affect your ranking.
The ranking titles are as follows:
less than 1 star: novice member
1 full star and some: apprentice member
2 full stars and some: advanced member
3 full stars and some: hardcore member
4 full stars and more: elite member
That system is completely automatic. Then you have the ranking titles that you can obtain and that you can choose to select as title instead of the default automatic system above. From what I can see those ranking titles you get aren't provided via an automatic system, but on the manual action and whim of a mod, as sort of acknowledgement of what he noticed. Because it's manual, it can happen that one poster gets a title after doing 6 timers the required action while another might get it after 10 times the required action.
The ones I encountered, and the conditions I managed to determine
- Spotlight poster: you have to have posted at least 1 thread that made it to be elevated to the regular 'IN THE SPOTLIGHT' threads. 1 time is usually enough to get that title
- Gumshoe: from what I observed, this is if you bring a number of news items to the attention of the mmorpg.com mods or admins (see the entry field to the right at the News page, where you can input your sources). How many news items are required is unknown, and may very possibly be variable
- Tipster: at first glance I'd assume it's for bringing news items to the attention of the mmorpg.com people as well, but what the difference is when you get the 'gumshoe' title and 'tipster' title I haven't figured out.
- guide: I assume it's become of some valuable threads you created that made it to a sticky, but this is guesswork. I also think it's a fairly new title, which might explain why a lot of people who have created threads that made it to sticky last year didn't get the title.
Then you have some additional titles that I spotted, that looks to me to be a one-time thing, where the poster got it for a special achievement he did that got noticed. So far all those titles are unique, I haven't seen them on any more than 1 poster each.
- Age of Conan advocate: I assume this 1 is for exceptional contributions to the AoC section, more than average.
- Jovian: I assume this one is EVE online related
- Keeper of the Archives: I assume this 1 is for posting a wealth of highly informative threads in the SWTOR section.
So, are there any other ranking titles that people would like to see? Or do you have info about the ranking titles mentioned above? Post it here
My own suggestion would be a ranking title for people who contribute majorly in spotting and reporting all the advertisement spam posts and posters that seem to infest these forums the last few months.

Rather than rankings and labels, I would be interested in seeing titles expand the direction they are currently going - rewards for contributions - and eventually become a public/common feature after a while.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

I'm reminded of CoX where you had titles beneath your name (Or could)
... and sometimes (Very rarely, like at the Halloween party), mods would pass out CUSTOM TITLES to a person or two.
... and those people would be the envy of everybody.
Like I remember somebody being 'Best Costume Ever'.
