Over on the offical forums there is a VERY long thread about re-doing FFXIVs dull, oversized, empty feeling zones. Its up to 50+ pages, 500+ psosts and over 17,000 views. And the crazy thing? Everyone seems to be in agreement. The not so crazy thing? Its been up since last Tuesday and we haven't seen a Dev responce since. So if you have any thoughts about the subject or even have your own ideas for a map layout, post away and let the OPer know, he can link it on the first page for yah. Its almost unreal how many people are in 100% agreement over this (and knowing that most of the offical forums has been a warzone, mostly flooded with people relentlessly defending the game).
Here the link if you want to show some support and keep the thread on top until monday (they better get their crap together and say something early next week)

Also the more "likes" the OP has the longer it stays on the "hot threads" on the side bar. right now it has like 200+

Interesting that you should post this now as I "just" booted up XIV to download whatever patches they have put out in order to check out any changes.
Thanks for the link!

Thanks... but no thanks. I really like FFXI so I thought I would try out FFXIV while it was still in Beta but what I saw really turned me off. I may give this game another go in 2 or 3 years if it still exists but right now I'll not touch it. If you enjoy it then more power to you.
Could bring some people back, I know this was one of the many reasons I didnt like the game. The area's just didnt feel right, even more so coming from FFXI into FFXIV. They got a lot of work cut out for them if they want to get a decent subscription base. FFXI > FFXIV just was a huge step backwards.
To the guy saying no thanks. I don't play the game either or plan to unless there are some huge updates, but you may want to post on the thread to atleast show them some support on things of this magnitude.
"In the immediate future, we have this one, and then weve got another one that is actually going to be so were going to have, what we want to do, is in January, what were targeting to do, this may or may not happen, so you cant hold me to it. But what were targeting to do, is have a fun anniversary to the Ilum shenanigans that happened. An alien race might invade, and they might crash into Ilum and there might be some new activities that happen on the planet." ~Gabe Amatangelo
Oh i dont play the game, but i keep up with it (there is still so much to hate about this game, it would be pages long) and as someone who played FFXI for 6 years and spent 75$ on a CE, im going to try and at least support the idea of changing and revamping as much of this game as possible. They already changed stuff like the skill point system, things liek the battle system, classes and even the "physical level" are being re-done or changed dramaticly.
Until they start charging for it, il keep up on the news and hope it eventually gets turned into something worth a damn. It still baffles me to this day how you go from a very sucessful FFXI to this pile of garbage...but hey, at least the new Devs are trying to salvage it.
Sorry I got to voice reality...
Even if they decided to go ahead and repair their copy/pasta work or can it for new terrain, you are looking at a year project.
It takes artists to be hired, interviewed, and rework the terrain... all of it....
This isn't a weekend project, they need to render every stone, dirt-path, patch of grass, and tree.
Yeah since they are really good at listening to players (auction houses, interfaces, and overall everything), you going to need to be reall really patient...
Tell you what, if they do this one thing, I might play it with you one more time during one small hour.
I doubt they listen, if they do make an announcement... I will be amazed, and I will eat my words.... buuuuut they won't.
Heh... SE listening to their costumers? Please come back to reality. Um... let me reword that: SE making a fun game? forget it...? I'm tempted to bring THE G and the T but...

At some point, I fear, they're going to realize that they're nearly building another MMO and give up on the whole effort

Too bad.

Square could have honestly avoided all these problems if they would have listened and acted on the complaints in alpha, EG: Needs a ah, game systems revamped etc.
Then again square will always have their 1 major weakness, they focus too much on making the game look pretty, that they fail in all other area's The fact you need a really good pc to run ff14 kills the amount of people that could try it. Bascally insted of designing the game for the average pc, they designed it for the top end.
In FF11 square has been starting to implement and allow stuff they never would have before, stuff they said that would never, ever happen in ff11 they have been doing lately, Mind you i think making the game to soloable and casual ruined the game. It lost all uniqueness it had. You can go from lv 30, to 90 in a half day now in abyysea. You still need to skill up though.. Parties have gotten scarce outside of abysea area's too.
Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:
A. Proven right (if something bad happens)
or
B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)
Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!
I protest! I had great fun with Final Fantasy games, and I liked the more open style of FF12.
Even more, I went back not a while ago to review some of my collection of Final Fantasy games and cutscenes from it, and I realized that I've had some of the best, most memorable moments in my gaming past in games like Final Fantasy 6, 7, 8 and 10.
Really, this is blasphemy!

Theres a difference between Square, Square Soft and Square Enix.
I don't quite understand the nature of this post.
This isn't a blood relative to whom you'e spent a lifetime forming a deep bond. This is a poorly designed monstrosty that was allowed to slip from Squar Enix's loins long before it was finished for the sole purpose of filtching cash from unsuspecting consumers.
I ask you, now the developers have released that they intend to radically change the classes around, does it not seem asking for a world redesign is a little bit foolish? If they didn't get the interactions with the world correct and the world itself is unpalatable; what precisely is worth salvaging aside from their brand name? It's only a matter of time before Square realizes that shutting it down, well initially drawing the ire of fans, won't actually have any long term consiquences. Because the only reason anyone is playing it now is for the two words on the box that preceed the roman numerals.
Ah, people are going that route? Hmm, I still think that the people that made games as Square and Squaresoft didn't suddenly all leave when the firm became Square Enix, so I don't see why all these games shouldn't be included. Blizzard is still mostly Blizzard under Activision Blizzard (even if a lot of their initial talent left) and Bioware is still mostly Bioware under EA.
Still, I liked FFXII a lot as well which was made by Square Enix, and I consider it just as worthy a sequel as games like FF8, FF9 and FF10 were.

Think of it more like a relative that left you for a long time and came back...different.
Think of it like Chef on South Park. We're not mad at Final Fantasy, we're mad at that goofy little company for screwing it up.

Sorry I c ouldn't log in with my old account and registration is disabled.....I guess SE responded using the ostrich approach.
But ya seriously, I played FFXI for over 3 years and it was an absolute blast.
FFXIV.......Man I wasn't so dissapointed since DDO, and STO.
SE had a mostly winning game formula with FFXI. I went back and tried it for a few months and it was still engrossing and fun.
All I wanted was FFXI revamped, instead we get a complete POS
SE needs to redo FFXIV.
You may want to look into patch 1.18 due early next month, which is basically the first step of doing just that, turning it into XI-2
They've said "Job System" and I got exited at first thinking that meant XI's job system but realized shortly after that it did not.

Patch 1.18 basically reworking the battlesystem... again.
They been patching this one area, and UI since day one when they realized the public hated it. So it doesn't surprise anyone when they they said they fixed it... they "fixed" it before.
No, that's blasphemy... there is not enough patches in the world to make this XI-2.
well im with you on 7 and 8... but.. i wasnt really feeling it with 10.. not to mention the frustration of getting the jecht shot right... i think for me that after 8 ? (9 wasnt on PC ) they seemed to lose the plot slightly.. i have no idea what the difference is between the different 'flavours' of Square.. so i can only assume its the same company at the end of the day... but i still think that FF represented some of the best RPG moments.. .. but not lately.. maybe they just need to rediscover their own strengths again.. at least i hope so.. i'd hate to think that the best that FF had to offer.. had already been and gone.. after all.. these are the guys that should be giving Bioware a run for their money
Do you realize how huge of an operation that would be? The game is already MASSIVE. The world isn't changing.
As a matter of fact, this is the thing that has me 100% believe I will never play the game again. The world is horrible, absolutely horrible, and worse than I've seen in any other MMORPG.
I still pity myself for purchasing the Collector's Edition. This game is in ruin.
Same boat as this guy, but you guys need to realize that Square Enix is a business, and they can't redo the entire world design. They would be better off make another MMO and cashing in again (oh wait, they are already doing that...). Anyhow, I still hold out a little hope it will be playable in a couple years, checking back in 2012 and see how the devolpment is going. There is definitally no magical one patch like implied in this post... its more like 30+ major patches before it can be playable.
Careful, the fanboi mod is out and about... he doesn't like you talking to noobs about how the game really is.
It has taken them nine months to develop auto-attack, and the animations for it aren't even complete. The community wants them to revamp entire maps... keep dreaming. I don't disagree with the reasons, but it's pretty unrealistic. The developers are finally starting to patch in content (something the game is lacking) and the community is more worried about lifeless zones. How about we let the developers give us something to do rather than spicing up maps?
I found that pretty pathetic myself, it took them this long to put in a simple auto attack and it is not even finished animation wise? Lame. I think they need to rethink some of their current redesigns of the game. Dungeons with a one hour time limit on them, pathetic.
I just get the feeling that the devs are just stubbornly clinging to FFXIV when they need to let it go and scrap it and redo it or move on. At some point they are going to need money so they are going to ahve to reintroduce the monthly fees or do something drastic and frankly I don't feel it will ever be worth a monthly sub cost.
Downloading the updates now. Going to check it out.
I don't like being herded into map corridors or having cliff boundry lines but I don't think it should be the focus right now. Trust me I love open worlds to explore in any direction but I would much rather have a more responsive battle system. After that navigating and making features obvious would be great.
Hopefully once they get the current game fixed up they can introduce jumping/swimming with a new area. Then they can go back and smooth out the old areas to make traveling more "free".
Just not worth my time anymore.
