Some Ideas For G&H

PVP

The most logical way to implement it would be to model it on the Triumvirate, where the players divide into 3 factions, such as in history, or the 3 houses in the main campaign of ROME:Total War. Many DAoC fans and other MMO players really want a 3 faction system, and this will begin the necessary process of ridding the game of its WOW-Clone stigma. The quickest and easiest way to do this would be to have instanced Battlegrounds, but with a territory context, where each faction starts with their un-conquerable zone, and can push to take over territory from the other 2, as seen in the old Shattered Galaxy map screen, or the new map in Word of Tanks. This would make PVP more meaningful and lend a historical feel to the game if real locations and old maps are used.

Famous Battles

To further distinguish the game, players should be able to take part in famous battles in Roman history, either as a single unit, seeing the battle from the ground while able to appreciate the bigger tactical picture through a meta-system, for eg. a map, or taking control of various units to implement  the historical tactics or invent your own. This will appeal to the RTS fans, as well as the history buffs.

Politics

Major Roman political leaders where declared demi-gods after their deaths, why not use your own divine status to work your way up your houses hierarchy?  Through political missions, assassination, gathering resources for bribery, holding banquets/orgies for the rich and famous, showing off your fighting skills in public contests in Rome, and commissioning propagandists to re-write history for you.

Rewards could be elite minions, larger estates, rare weapons as gifts, your face on coins, a position in the senate, but with the penalty that if you annoy enough npcs, you could lower your ranking, and be exiled from Rome. A player run political system could be worked into this. And why not arranged marriages, and the ability to have children? Your children could be raised to become your minions, and your wife/husband could help build up the estate.

Sandbox

The ability to gather resources and build the parts of your estate yourself, allowing for more customisation in look and position. The ability to breed animals, as minions, (attack dogs) or mounts. Resource gathering could be in a separate region from the pve, or in the estate instance. For an expansion (given the scale of this concept) how about building your own galley, complete with slaves at the oars? PVE would be fighting pirates, ending in bombarding their island bases, and pvp between other galleys, including boarding actions with your minions. How about building siege weapons for use against cities or rival estates? Including the ultimate weapon... A giant hollow horse!
