I tried it for a few months and enjoyed the trial; got a time card & it was fun but all and all a horribly put together game. Combat was sluggish, the life-support had been pulled to feed ToR, the game felt dead; i mean dead in the water "going nowhere that current won't take it", and dying mainly because EA doesn’t know how to support an MMO. They thought the game could survive having all life-support but the most basic monitoring systems removed; meaning they pulled most devs and set them to work on other tasks as soon as they could.
MMO's cannot survive healthily without life support. WAR is in the state it is in because EA was too cheap to provide it with the support needed to keep it going. The updates to endgame, the skaven nonsense, and the 15 dollar RvR pack for hair styles, dyes, and miniscule content was all they gave it after launch. Riddled with bugs; i imagine the bug report folders are like limbo for reports; i say that because there is a quest in stage 1 Empire territory that has been broken for well over a year. They don't have enough devs to fix what’s broken at a steady enough rate to keep up with what is being broken by the repairs. Had the combat system been better the game would have made more base money at launch; had EA known how to run an MMO it would be in a better state, and that’s the end of it.
I hate to say it but the grim news rings true. EA would sooner kill this game than see it go free to play; sending it free to play requires a little content to sell & EA has no idea how to run a business past what they learned in school. WAR probably won't go free to play entirely; more likely EA would kill it when they decided it was not providing enough cash for them.
It is best for the industry the MMO throne remains an dusty empty seat never to be filled.
If EA cut Mythic loose and allowed them full control over the game, and then Mythic went and entirely redid the PvE to be an actual game world, and made the PvP the way they wanted it,and added a third faction, then maybe. Then again, I'd rather Mythic just make DAoC 2.
I've been playing again on my old account (14 days free) and this game is awesome... in T1. I wish more people were playing beyond in T2 and T3. There are warbands to be found on the one big server, but all of the public quests are empty and that is a part of the game I really enjoy. There is alot of good PVE content that is just neglected and it's such a shame.
This game also looks and runs REALLY well. I have 4x supersampling forced through my drivers with everything maxed out at 1080p and it looks great and runs smooth as butter. I have it locked at 60fps and it never dips below.
If this game were released today as is it would be a huge hit. It's so hard for a game to recover an intitial failure. But comparing this game to modern releases like Rift, Warhammer is a much better game. Rift feels like a cheap ripoff comparitively.
I don't really know what EA/Mythic/Bioware could do to get people back into this game but I wish they would. Maybe making it F2P up to Tier 3 with an item shop or something. I dunno.

I'm in favor of bumping the F2P up a couple tiers on the condition that they also increase the amount of T4 PvE content and turn City Sieges into... I dunno... ACTUAL CITY SIEGES. I was pleased to hear that they fixed the PvP gear balance at T4 but now instead of being boring and frustrating, it's just boring.
All around I agree it's a fun game, the classes are pretty fresh and unique and the world is as exciting and colorful as the characters. I'm not too far from a decision to start playing this game again myself, but I can't seem to persuade myself to get over the fact that my hopes and dreams of killing Order's bankers and auctioneers were only a nooblet's wet dream and were masterfully dashed after struggling through a brutal ORVR PvP campaign only to be left out because I wasn't part of some elitist premade for a strangely slapped together instance that had nothing to do with cities or sieges.
Was curious to how many people would consider giving Warhammer another shot.
What things would you want them to do to make you consider coming back? Or would you never go back?
I gave the game 2 chances and I probably wont ever go back even on F2P.
Chance 1 - From release it was fun doing PvP infact that and the public quests was practically all I did to level my characters in the begining. Then I got to Tier 3 PvP and it became apparent that a certain class was grossly overpowered when 70-80% of the opposition players in sieges and PvP were all one class....... Fail & ontop of that Developer Denial double fail !
Chance 2 - I can back on the re-invite thing and rolled an Orc Chopper but eventually went back to my other characters. T3 and T4 balance was still shot, worse still player numbers were so low there was little to no PvP or sieges happening outside T1. So I hit the PvE only to find it horrificly boring & just bland.
Supposedly balance issues have been sorted out now but to me its too little too late, the game left a bad taste in my mouth and even if it goes F2P (which it probably should) I wont be going back there. When I first began playing 6 of my friends also bought the game and began playing, 5 of them quit for the same reasons as me and 1 was in denial for a few more months after we left before he quit and went back to LOTRO.
The game looked and felt dated at launch which could be forgiven if it was fun but with Bland PvE, unbalanced PvP and a dwindling population there was no fun.
They really lost me long before the game launched. I don't think anyone at Cryptic even played anything Warhammer (well, possibly some Bloodbowl) and the idea to use Wows/EQs mechanics instead of Games Workshops was really bad.
The game have it's good parts but it just ain't enough, if I want to play a Mythic game there is only one choice still. If they game had felt more unique things might have been different.
Mythic should never have licensed the IP, they should have made DaoC2 instead and we all know it, there is a reason that the studio are just a shadow of it former self today. Warhammer should have been licensed to someone that actually loves it, there are several nice single player game for 40K made by people who actually does, they should have gotten the license.
But Games workshop have become sell outs lately, now they even stopped with metal figurines and started making them in resin instead.
As much as I wanted to love this game... it just didn't happen.
I actually have gone back to WAR a few times already. But I've never been able to stay.
As with a lot of other games, low population servers... low population zones... player level/groups that never have enough to form raids or get any fair pvp going (unless you are lowbie).
I love some of the things that they did with the game, but like Loke said... not enough to keep me.
In my opinion WAR and RIFT do quite a few things right... but there is something about their combat that makes them... 'lacking'. I'm not sure how else to put it, but they just seem... 'lifeless' from a combat perspective.
What crazy server are you guys rolling on? On the servers I play on there are plenty of people to fight in all Tiers!
It's not Badlands then.
Despite everything that has happened, it's been a server dance from one to the other ever since release. And it looks like Gorfang is going to be the last remaining server of the US stock in the coming months. It's not there yet, but it's well on it's way.
I was a stupid Warhammer loyalist. I bought the game when it went live and hoped for the best. However, like other have said this game didn't come out right. It is sad that the developers didn't make the game based upon the rules of the actually roleplaying game. Somehow though they took a pnp roleplay game which ruleset doesn't have levels and sadly made the game like WOW. They also didn't even try to make the world anything like the actual damn real Warhammer world. They litterally had everything they needed to make there own NEW type of MMO. Sadly thought they didn't.
Actually Warhammer Online I would say is one of my biggest dissapointments out of all the games I waited to ever come. I played pnp Warhammer 1st edition when I was in high school regulary with my friends and then later in 2005 I played which I thought was hands down the best ever ruleset for pnp roleplaying in 2nd edition Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. I own all the books from 2nd edition and sadly I thought this was what the damn devs were gonna make there game from. BUT NO!, it was just a dream. Somehow these clowns took a roleplaying game without levels and made it into a level based MMO. Warhammer is a skill/career based game. For them to do what they did in turning it into a WoW clone was just sad.
Now sadly the IP are theres and my dream of seeing a game I loved to play come alive in an MMO is gone. As I leaf through the books every now and then and occasionally get together with friends for a play session of 2nd edition Warhammer the topic of this MMO ALWAYS comes up. If not by me one of my friends brings it up. I cannot expect those of you who haven't played the actual pnp roleplaying game to understand what a dissapointment this game is to us on all levels. It is though and sadly they did it to themselves.
Instead of being brave and making something new and fresh with game rules right in front of them we have what we have and its dieing every day because they lacked the skill to make something original. Don't know if all this rant means much to anyone here but I thought I'd get it off my chest. This is the reason I will not be trying Warhammer Online again, sadly...

Give F2P and I will play this until GW 2 comes out
