Crafting vs. PvP

My friend and I are planning on making a mmo and we were wondering what you want more of Crafting or PvP?

Thanks for the help.

Good PvP adds years to a game's life span. Crafting, not so much. Crafting that fuels PvP is probably the best mix, and it helps balance the game.

To me both would make a great game. :)  Not less of either.  That's what people have issues with, they want Crafting that benefits the main part of the game whether it's PvE or PvP.

The people who craft (my mom being one of them) love crafting the most out of any game, especially when they benefit from the crafting, otherwise it's tedious and pointless.  They want to be able to make their own gear that is as good as or can be upgraded to be better than the PvP/PvE armor.  Then in EQ II, another way they make Crafting useful is for player housing you can have a Carpenter and for buff food you can have a Provisioner.

See some of the issues Crafters have with most games is that most games can't seem to realize that you can have an equality of both crafting and PvP/PvE.

So yes, you should have an even amount of both. :)

Can we see on the other side? No, but can the other side see us? Maybe, maybe not, guess we won't find out until we're supposed to.

You should probably make sure the crafters make most of the gear that the PvPers need to PvP, or at least be what upgrades it for them, along with put in a Craft that can create things that helps them stay alive, like health potions and buff food.  :)  I've noticed that works great in most MMO's.

Agreed I do not think anyone should get left out.  The successful long running MMORPG's have for both.  I did not quite understand is this going to be a MMORPG?  Or pure PvP and Crafting?  I think what you meant was PvE as well but if you clarify I can kind of make a better assessment of what I think would be a good balance.  :)

Pvp makes a game fun for a long time. But I think keeping combat skills and crafting skills seprate. So you dont have to choice between being a crafter or combat toon.

We are planning on making a mmorpg like WoW or Rift and we just want to know Opinion on what we should do.

  • NideliaNidelia Member Posts: 43

... ... ... Rift and WoW?  Okay, WoW's cool, except for the latest expansion, but with Rift my mom and I felt like we were playing the Night of the Living Dead when we made our characters, then when we got out into the rest of the world... the graphics were no better than DDO or LoTRO, plus the ore and flowers looked like candy.

Now I don't usually share the same views as my mom on games, I love PvP, she hates it, I... sort of like Rift, she hated it.  I just couldn't stand the graphics and did not think it was worth putting out $50 plus a sub fee for when I could play LoTRO or DDO for free.

I would not base a game I was making off of them, but then again, I only speak for us, I can't speak for the rest of the people or for you. :)  It's just up to you to make a decision on what you're doing.

Well I think to really implement PvP and Crafting you would definately need a team for each so no one unbalances anything.  I know in order to make an MMO you have to have a lot of different teams working on each thing such as artists for scenery, writers for storyline, not totally sure of which every team of devs is.

If you are going to put both in and I would recommend it because the longest running games in which have been running and are still going strong after 12 ans 13 years.  Still coming out with expansions and everything that are balanced for both PvP and Crafting.

I think if I were going to make one and do both systems I would first do some definate studying of several games in which have both and then do polls of which game has the most liked crafting and PvP and see what the balance is on each one.  One game might be more liked for crafting and the other for PvP so it just depends.

As far as balance the balance for crafting more comes in with PvE not against PvP.  Crafting generally goes with the PvE style of play and stats or you could even include both PvP gear and PvE gear for the crafters.  Or there is more of the option to make the crafting more for buffs and decorating guild halls and housing.  But I would most definately do some research of playing games and experiencing what everyone says they like before deciding what to do.  I know the poll I did said 68% out of 87 votes want the crafting.  So I would definately not leave it out but at the same time don't make it too candied. Make it a challenge and a lot of people have mentioned that they like systems where you get some kind of xp depending on the success of what you make.  And most people said that they do want in depth interactive crafting.

I want to base it on DAoC but the person i working with has no idea what that is

Now I never played that, but from what I read and saw I would agree wholely that that would be a better one to base it on for both Crafting and PvP.  Especially with their different Realm PvP system.  :)

Try it. Free to play and its browser based. It will at least give you an idea of what your partner is talking about.

Rune... scape?!  Omg omg omg!  I played that, within one night my eyes were bleeding and I was going:  "Why am I playing this????"

Runescape is full of trollers, harrasers, hackers, and as far as I know they have gone to no lengths to prevent these things.

To me as a heavy MMORPGer, Runescape is the last game I put up in my browser, even as the last game on earth.

Can we see on the other side? No, but can the other side see us? Maybe, maybe not, guess we won't find out until we're supposed to.

This is the reason why I play.   I go on privys to watch 12 year olds kick and scream as I kill them... I also like to do it on the real game... but it's better on privys, they throw tantrums.  You're just mad you can't be like K3nst3 and DDoS everyone for a kill...

Only when they kick, whine, and scream.

My point exactly.  ROFLMAO!  Runescape is the last game you should be basing your game on. :)

I've actually played some awesome f2p's that don't have all those issues, but that one, maaaaaan, it has real issues.

To me a fun game is a great player community with great game mechanics.  I'm not even picky about my graphics. :)  Looky at my avatar, I love pixel sprites!  And I had fun making that .gif, thought the body of and hair aren't mine, I have issues making hair and bodies, though I hope to get there someday. XD

They make me remember what a game really is about. :)  If you know what I mean.

Can we see on the other side? No, but can the other side see us? Maybe, maybe not, guess we won't find out until we're supposed to.

If your partner feels that some part of Runescape will work well in the game and you haven't played it then the best thing you can do is try the game to see what its like. The opinions of random people on a forum aren't going to help you make your game any better.

    I don't support trollers on any game for any reason.  I sometimes troll trolls, but that's once in a blue moon when I'm extremely bored.  Please Hi_Ranqd, you could base a game on something so much better than Runescape.  -_-;

it will because the people on the forum are going to be the people playing it.
