"Why are you going to be outnumbered from the beginning? Because we want to make sure to feel that you are an epic hero throughout the game."
meh. Sounds like a lot of WoW-style hand-holding and rails to follow with the typical themepark gameplay.
"See the cover spots shown in green which means that this will be the first MMORPG that you can use cover while you fire!"
LOL
I would rather use cover in a game that is challenging. During most of the fight scenes during the game play the character is standing around being shot at.
Sorry but as an MMORPG gamer who wants something to play for long-term I do not see myself playing SWTOR more than a week tops (I highly doubt that I will ever purchase it actually . .. depends on if I ever see a fun looking gameplay vid) but GW2 I will most definitely play very casually for years because of the instant and unique PVP.
I find it strange how everybody that really dislikes the way TOR is going (enough to post their disgust) feels the need to mention GW2.
so won't ToR be rather heavily instanced? Maybe not to the same sort of extent as GW1, but similar to AoC?
Think they said about 85% of it is open free roaming world that you can share with others.
So that would put it at about 15% intances. Think most of that is flashpoint and areas you talk to npcs and the like.
Here is the offical quote:
Quote: For the average planet, I'd say that 85+% of space is located in open, non phased areas - Bioware
Edit: i expect, and this is just purely speculation. that being the starter worlds are mostly designed to be story driven (sort of like a tutorial/intro to your class) that this will likely be more instances with the instance material dropping off as you get more into the game.
I guess I did not explain that very well. what I meant to say is that ToR will not be a seamless persistant world, but instead be similar to AoC with multiple zones. From my understanding, GW2 will be much more of a seamless persistant world and therefore be more alike the "real" mmo, at least according to modern perception.
i can tell you for a factthe worlds are wide open and non instanced. It is a real world and all its splendor :P
In all the gameplay vids I have seen it appears that you can onnly go one route. Can you verify that there will be an 'open world'?
I think I'd rather start by having you post the gameplay vids you've seen, and unless its the Taral V flashpoint which is essentially an instance, all other videos would likely be an open world.

The presentation video of Hoth and Tatooine showed a wide open world, besides that also demo reports of the starter worlds talked about huge, wide open areas where you could go everywhere without hitting invisible walls.
This is next to the dev statements that talked about SWTOR being as open and free roaming as any MMO like WoW or LotrO.
Unless you find WoW and LotrO no 'open world' MMO's of course, because then SWTOR probably also isn't one.

“we’re open to whatever our players seem most interested in.” If after release you guys would like more story content, more dungeons, more events, more maps or whatever it’s something that we have to consider because ultimately making you happy is what makes us successful. Whether we release that in DLC (like the bonus mission packs in GW1) or whether we do it through expansions (Like Eye of the North) is yet to be determined. As to whether or not there are going to be items like XP boosts available in the in game store I can only reiterate what we’ve said before (and will continue to say) that we’ll release details on it when they are available and that our core philosophy--of not requiring you to spend additional money to play the game and not making the game difficult or painful to play in order to encourage you to buy things from the store--still stands.

So while they won't force players to buy items, they will be selling what people will buy.
In case you didn't know, this was before the shitstorm on the forums. I was there and I can assure you that people will not buy the "content, more dungeons, more events, more maps" if they're sold as DLCs, according to the poll. And Arena.net had to seriously reconsidered their stance on this after all the raging.
If you put the same poll on a Guild Wars 2 site I wonder what the outcome would be. Hmmm...
Your logic is extremely flawed. First off, IGN is not a mmorpg website, nor is it dedicated to specific games. You also put in your extreme bias by pointing out that it would be different on a GW2 site, which is irrelevent because I can just say the same thing about it being done on a SWTOR website. So in effect what you said was pointless.
Frankly, IGN is a much better place to have a poll for a mmorpg than a site deticated to a specific game because then you are in an extremely bias location. Why pull would you pull something from a more objective location into a more bias location as if that would provide a good way to formulate rational conclusions.

I would expect an IGN poll to favor Bioware, as IGN is more targetted toward single player games and those players are generally familliar with BioWare as a developer. But that's hardly equivalent to putting the poll on the GW2 website. lol

I know that IGN would still have an ammount of Bias, anything would but definitely less than a GW2 website. That's why trying to change the playing field from IGN to a website that will have a bunch of fanbois makes no sense for a person who wants to see realistic and less biased results.

There is a difference what people say they will or will not do before a game is released. Its easy to say you wont buy the content now before its out, but if the game is as or more successful then GW1 then people will buy it. They did it in GW1 and was very successful at it. They have to keep paying the server upkeep, payrolls, and other necessities in order to keep the game going and the community interested. Nothing is completly free. After all, they are not new to the industry being that ArenaNet was founded by ex-Blizzard employees.

I consider myself a fanboi to SWTOR, but I research it and the competition objectively because it is a game just like any other.

I'm actually planning on playing both games, as they both seem to have a lot to offer. I think GW2 will be the second game for a lot of people, with the advantage being no montly fee.

In case you didn't know this nobody was suggesting that those content should be free in that poll, it was overwhelmingly agreed that those content should be sold together/with new gameplay features as expansion packs instead of DLCs as DLCs will cause the playerbase to be far more severely fragmented.

I will be doing the same thing. I think the dynamic part of GW2 will be fun. But the rest I probably won't get into with GW2.
The story part of GW2 is a completely different side game. It is totally instanced just for you, but you can invite others into your instance. And all dungeons will be the same, but so are most MMO's so no big deal. There will be no open world PvP or PvP of any kind in the dynamic world in GW2. You have to go to the mists or BG's for PvP.
TOR will all be in the same universe. The class story will also be solo with the ability to invite 3 other friends. But it will only be that way in small story only ares that are seamlessly instansed. No loading screen. And the story goes on in the same open world. You enter your story quest hub area for the cutscenes and dialogue. Then go out into the open world to complete your task. Where you can group with anyone in the area. Take any of the open world quests, flashpoints or world group storyies all at the same time. Just like any other MMOs open worlds.
So I will get GW2 with a one time purchase for the dynamic world. But the storytelling will be far better in TOR IMO because of BW. Plus I would like a break from the sword and board and try a bit of SW.
How many people long for that "past, simpler, and better world," I wonder, without ever recognizing the truth that perhaps it was they who were simpler and better, and not the world about them? R.A.Salvatore

I think you missed my point. Whether its bundled in expansions or as separate DLC content, people will buy it. I dont know how familiar you are with GW1, but one of there major purchasable DLCs was the mission packs. They were at the time $10 for the bundle. People bought into it, in fact it helped the game a bit. http://www.guildwars.com/products/extras/missionpack/default.php
All of these were successful. They didnt lower the population and didnt cause a hinderence to people that didnt have the DLC. The game is still successful today. Log in to one of the major hubs and you still see tons of people.
As long as GW2 can deliver a great game, in which I believe they will from all the demo footage I have seen, I think most will still dish out money if they do offer DLCs and of course have a resonable price attached to them.
I've already said I'll play both, but I wish to add something.
I have been playing gw lately to catch up on my HoM for gw2. There are a few things they REALLY need to work on for gw2.
Voice acting / Story. The vocie acting in nightfall is just...well...wretched. It's really, really, bad. There is almost no emotion involved in the lines. The lines they speak may not be the greatest, and when put into context with the story, make it even worse. I felt that prophecies had it much better, and even factions was decent.
I feel really detached from the story in Nightfall. I'm a big story person, but I don't even feel like I'm along for the ride, I feel like I just appear to do something, and then go away while real things happen.

Not only that, but the mission packs could only be played solo, and so offered absolutely no gameplay advantage for those who bought them, nor did it lock anyone out of content in a group sense. They existed purely for lore reasons, and people still bought them.
The story part of GW2 is a completely different side game.
Really? That's why they're trying to show it off at every demo? o_O I've gotten the firm impression that the personal story, combined with dynamic events, were supposed to be the point, unless you only want to PvP. Now, side games, that's mini-games, esport PvP, and the like.
It is totally instanced just for you, but you can invite others into your instance. And all dungeons will be the same,
but so are most MMO's so no big deal. There will be no open world PvP or PvP of any kind in the dynamic world in GW2. You have to go to the mists or BG's for PvP.
You are correct that there is no open-world PvP. However, the mists have dynamic events as well, and PvE objectives and resources to fight over. You can level entirely from 1-80 in the mists, and the mapsare said to be able to hold hundreds of players at a time (source: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/World_versus_World)
TOR will all be in the same universe. The class story will also be solo with the ability to invite 3 other friends.
So... just like the GW2 personal story, only you can invite 4 friends in GW2. Class story cutscenes are instanced in SWTOR as well, yes?
But it will only be that way in small story only ares that are seamlessly instansed. No loading screen. And the story goes on in the same open world.
It does in GW2 as well; the dynamic events link story and are related to various personal storyline elements, but occur in the open world.
