The reason I bothered putting up the last part is because I have had it on my chest for a while and, despite it being a relatively small thing, I don't do well with bottling things up. I just had to get that out in one form or another and this was my first opportunity.
Ok. But it is unrelated to the discussion(s) that went on beforehand.
It shouldn't come up again, I'll try to keep it under wraps.

Your stubborness knows no bounds. You linked a half second flip compared to a flashy twirly animation that lasts a good 3 -4 seconds..(that you see more than just 1 charr doing)
Then you try and state that dodging an attack by finding cover or rolling to cover as SWTOR does isn't a dodge because it doesn't conform to what GW2 is doing.
I believe you've proven your point, you can't be swayed from being completely blinded to being somewhat reasonable, meanwhile I'll continue looking forward to both games.

I think this holds true for both, granted ToR has to be fun but if GW2 isn't fun either, then people won't pick up the expansions and will play something that is fun.
So a game has to be fun for continued use. If GW2 isn't fun for whatever reason then those people will tell others not to pick up the box, but thats true of any game. Granted B2P is a more enticing model but it of itself won't ensure the games success. the content will. Sub fee or not won't change that.
absolutely, but I beleive GW2 will have a increase in initial box sales just because it's B2P, if it is good enough, it could change alot of things. A true pivoting point in the mmo genre.
If ToR does great, what will that change?

It counters what you claim that gw2 will do and keep sub model alive
Going for both here initially. GW2 has no monthly fee, so financially there is no real difference between having just TOR or both. Even if GW aint that good - its B2P! 50,- and you're done, making it a great backup in case you're bored and need a change, or if whatever other game you play has servers down.
I remember from GW1, every wednesday morning it was crowded as then WoW servers were down. You might think 50,- for half a day playing per week is a bit weird, but after 5 years you've still only paid 50,- for over 200 1/2 days. or 100 full days. or 3 months playing for 50,-. Beat that with a subscripbed game, you'd be out 50+13/month = 90,-.
Besides of that, the previous games (GW1 series and the KOTOR series) had very strong stories which alone makes me want to clear both to see how the story is like. After that, its down to whatever has the best open/world/whatever pvp setup... On that end, GW has the edge as they actually managed to balance their first game to some extend with their pvp-only and pve-only skill sets.
However, both games are very similar in their setup which makes the choice quite hard if you're forced to pick something:
-no dedicated healer (everybody takes care of themselfs & no waiting 30-60min for healers)
-no dedicated tank (see healer note).
-Environmental effects (hiding behind obstacles for example which gives pvp and pve a whole new dimension).
-Minigames (gw's dynamic events, tor's flying own spaceship)
Also, F2P games end up costing so much if you really want to be competitive
Good thing GW2 aint F2P then
According to the intor on MMORPG.COM, it is F2P. If they are wrong then so be it, but I can only go by the info I am given.
Actually if you notice it says retail too. It just doesn't have a sub fee. You still have to buy the actual game.
Ahh, got it. It's buy the box and then free to play after that, but if you want to remain competitive you have to go to their cash shop. Really not much different than F2P outright, if anything this payment style is even more greedy than the rest. Still not impressed. Sorry. I will admit though, GW2 does look pretty, just not my cup of tea.

Actually, I think it would kill the sub model completely if SWTOR does well, even more so thatn GW2 doing well.
If SWTOR does well, that would mean that in order to have a successful MMO similar to WoW, you'd have to put in as much work as BioWare did. Creating possibly the largest, most content heavy game on launch, EVER, just to compete in the Subscription market.
I think more companies would likely go F2P to pull people away from BioWare and Blizzard, with the exception being possibly Bethesda when they get in the game.

It's perfectly fine, and logical. Star Wars is the largest entertainment franchise in the world(basically). It's bigger than James Bond, Star Trek, whatever. It's huge.
Besides this, ArenaNet is a smaller company who shipped a innovative game that tried some things. Some of these things worked, some of these didn't. I think the IGN userbase the type of playered(mostly) who ditched GW for WoW. That's fine too.
I have a good feeling about Guild Wars 2, because I think ArenaNet is a great company. In the six years GW has been running, they have been amazing to their fans. I hope it continues. Like so many others here, I will play both games. GW2 has no fee, there is no reason not to play it regardless.
I won't dare say if the game will be popular. Not a lot of people know about Guild Wars in the mainstream. I think what matters in the quality, and the word of mouth from fans that will tell their fans.
The hype that is going on here, seems to manifest itself from all the people who are sick and fed up with traditional MMOs - Auto attack, hotkey based, quest based, linear combat that bogs us down in the same conventions since WoW.
My problems are much more vast with SWTOR, but I still hope it will be amazing. The biggest thing I suspect is that, I am one of many who are very sick of the traditional MMO type questing and so on.
But if you would have me choose, as the people in this thread seems to be doing, of course I would go for GW2. I think it sounds like the more interesting game. Real-time combat, being able to be sidekicked up and down with everyone, just actually.. discovering all these events at random. And I have high hopes for the PvP.
Were as in Bioware's offering. Bioware is a standout company in story. But all there games(perhaps except for Mass Effect 2) have been bogged down by isssues with regards to balance, difficulty, phasing and so on. I am worried that they are throwing pvp into SWTOR like Blizzard threw PvP into WoW. Basically enabling PvP in a PvE based games and see what happens.
At the end of the day, I think many of us(just assuming) can't take this anymore. Not more of these wow type games, waiting for healers, wasting your time doing mundane things.
GW2 is the first time I've actually heard a developer say: "you know what, we don't care about a long grind. Do what you want!".
And also just the Guild Wars community. Still so many people playing GW1, and so many of these people are super cool. I am afraid SWTOR will attract the wrong crowd if it becomes this uber popular game.
The best thing about SWG was the community. the starwars fans who played that were older.. it was mostly these types of players who liked the whole idea of just being a character in this universe they loved instead of being the jedi hero which is the cool thing in the mind of a 12 year old. it kinda seperated the immature from the mature, and this is one of the best things about having a mmo that has a grown large population, and then being the MMO king.
For all its accomplishments, WoW has also suffered from being nr. 1. If you actually think about it, it's not a game that has received more updates or more content investment than MMOs with 1/10 of its player base. so what does this mean? that having a uber popular MMO wont mean that you get more content every month.
It's all about just having a healthy population to make sure the game has a long life. I think GW2 will be that game. It's not carried by it's IP. Just by idea, so many of us hope they will succeed in. If GW2 does not become this great game, I will be very sad. It will such a shame, because I don't remember the last time someone tried to break the holy trinity like this. They are really trying to shake it up.
Ahh, got it. It's buy the box and then free to play after that, but if you want to remain competitive you have to go to their cash shop. Well, it will really depend, GW2 won't be selling the same things GW1 sold, as its a different game with different levels. Maybe they'll sell skill packs like before? Maybe armor packs? Maybe just visual items? Maybe they'll sell boost packs for leveling. We don't know what to expect yet.
I wonder how much the GW2 versus Swtor debate will divide this community even further closer to launch. I fear for the worst. It wil be a cesspool of fans of either game attacking the other, stimulating others to retaliate and drawing yet more warriors to the front. It will be a war the likes of which we've never seen. We are talking a board wide hypewar, my friends. And we are all just sitting here and letting it happen ...

Why can't we just all get along and admit that SWTOR has a lot more going for it?

Their won't be skill packs as you won't be unlocking or stealing skills like in GW1. Their won't be XP pots as after level 10 it only requires about 90 to hit each level after that. Their won't be armor packs as this isn't a gear based game and that would be just pointless.

ANet will do what they did with GW, bring out quality expansions faster than any other MMO company can. They released 2 expansions within 1,5 year both as large as the original game. They only stopped releasing expansions because they started to work on GW2.

Well, you still have to run to the skill trainers and such, so if they don't have a skill pack unlock, then its likely people will just be running skill trains again. Armor wasn't a really big part in GW1 either, but they still sold the packs, mainly for PvP arena players, but they're still there. They will be selling something in the store, and likely, it will be something like these things that people will find some use for, or else it wouldn't be a cash shop.
Thats how these things work. Games with cash shops sell items and look forward to additional revenue from these items.
Personally I feel its stupid for them to sell content packs to different areas, and if they sell only visual armor then its likely it won't be stuff you can get in game, and they would probably withhold quite a few styles to generate revenue through the cash shop.
We can't say for certain what they WILL have but we can guarantee that whatever it is, it will focus more on enticing players to buy it.

The reason they bring out expansions faster than other companies is because it's their main source of income for the game. With that said it does bring up another subject of "if they can bring out decent sized expansions working with a buy once budget then why can't the big companies bring out expansions just as fast working with a regular income budget"
Well, you still have to run to the skill trainers and such, so if they don't have a skill pack unlock, then its likely people will just be running skill trains again.
Still have to do after you buy the pack, it only unlocks for pvp, wanne pve you still have to buy them from the trainer

Same here as for the skills
They will be selling something in the store, and likely, it will be something like these things that people will find some use for, or else it wouldn't be a cash shop.
Sure they put in items that can be used but the discussion was about gamebreaking buy to win stuff and that it is not
Thats how these things work. Games with cash shops sell items and look forward to additional revenue from these items.
Thats how they work in f2p not in GW1 dunno bout gw2 yet but why would i thinkthey will change the itemshop when gw already proved for 6 years that it dusnt need those items to make profit
Personally I feel its stupid for them to sell content packs to different areas, and if they sell only visual armor then its likely it won't be stuff you can get in game, and they would probably withhold quite a few styles to generate revenue through the cash shop.
On the content, Most p2p games sell their content in the form of an paid expansion which is the same as content form a shop. only thing gw sold btw was 4 solo missions which you got for free for quite some time.
Like most p2p games do nowadays to, so if one should be alowed a form of selling shop only fluff items its gw
We can't say for certain what they WILL have but we can guarantee that whatever it is, it will focus more on enticing players to buy it.
Why do you believe Anet WILL change its shop to something else after 6 years?

food for thought really.
Its because when a company has you already paying monthly for their product they have more incentive to draw out your payments and less incentive to keep adding content to their game.
Whereas with the B2P model that Anet uses they have to keep putting out quality games and content or else people won't buy their stuff and they won't get money.
Sure not all devs are like that but its a simple fact nonetheless.

I think it depends on what will count as "quality" when they are running a full persistent world and they aren't releasing standalones. I seriously doubt we'll see standalone expansions here, and its unlikely they'll be releasing entire new continents on a 6 month turn around, unless they have the maps worked out and they rehash the DEs and just add to personal story.
I mean really with the expansions to GW you had the story aspects to bring you along, but really each expansion was pretty content-light. Some MMOs expansions are light on content too, but they also have much more content to begin with.... usually.
unless someone post the number of votes, the poll is worth nothing. However, the outcome truly is logical. I don't know anyone who has never heard of star wars. Guild Wars is far less popular, so this percentage is still pretty good.
And I would have voted both if i'm willing to pay sub, but beacause I don't I vote for gw2.

*shivers*
Why can't we just all get along and admit that SWTOR has a lot more going for it?
;-)
My brand new bloggity blog.
Their won't be skill packs as you won't be unlocking or stealing skills like in GW1. Their won't be XP pots as after level 10 it only requires about 90 to hit each level after that. Their won't be armor packs as this isn't a gear based game and that would be just pointless.
Yep. Storm is coming.
... oh wait, that's another franchise I was thinking of, wrong reference
ANet will do what they did with GW, bring out quality expansions faster than any other MMO company can. They released 2 expansions within 1,5 year both as large as the original game. They only stopped releasing expansions because they started to work on GW2.

The ease with which predictions are made on these forums:
Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
With that said it does bring up another subject of "if they can bring out decent sized expansions working with a buy once budget then why can't the big companies bring out expansions just as fast working with a regular income budget"
food for thought really.
Because Anet dusnt have subscription fees to milk out between expansions, not really food for thought
