ToR vs GW2 poll

Someone on the SWTOR forums posted a link to a poll done by ign.com. I was suprised by this outcome seeing as to how much hype GW2  gets around here.

We Want to Know

Assuming Guild Wars 2 and The Old Republic both come out this year, which would you want to play?

50%

The Old Republic

22%

For the average person Star Wars and Bioware are enough of a justification to buy the game.

yep, and one might add that star wars has one of the biggest fanbases, if not the biggest (not talking of 11 million wow users here, i talk of "fans")...

PS: i would have voted for TOR too tho :P

And the average person is who buys most games. Don't get me wrong, I think GW2 will likely be better. But it shows how much all our arguing and bitching have an effect on mainstream games.

If you put the same poll on a Guild Wars 2 site I wonder what the outcome would be. Hmmm...

Well i never was a Star Wars fan, not until after i played the first Kotor. That was actually the only reason for me to buy an xbox back than. I had seen the movies when i was a kid back in the 80s, but they didn't draw me in like Kotor did. After that i my interest in the SW universe really took off, but i have always been a fan of BW games.

I think GW2 will be better also, I am not even going to play TOR, everything I have seen and read about it dosn't interest me in the slightest.

Well this was posted on IGN.com that's pretty much an all games site

  • GormokGormok Member Posts: 379

Yeah i couldn't get the poll either, i wanted to see how many people voted in it

Im ready to bet my left ball, that we want see Swtor for another 2-4 years. Dont shoot the messenger!

  • NaralNaral Member UncommonPosts: 748

I will play both, assuming neither sucks too badly. I am not as convinced that SWTOR will suck as much as many think it will, and I am equally unconvinced that GW2 will be the second coming of Christ either, as many people seem to think it will be.

I expect they will both be fun, non earth shattering games that will keep me entertained for a while. I cannot imagine an MMO that will have the staying power for me that EQ1 did, just because of the lack of newness factor.

Well, stupid questions deserve witty answers : Both ?

GW2 is on my priority list to get once it hits the shelves, never been much of a SW fan but also want to play TOR once it gets out and considering a B2P and a P2P that will be totally possible.

Maybe a poll regarding TOR and future Blizz title would be fun to see when comparing subs and fans since both will be aimed to the average player :)

I am so tired of the "sword and sorcery" type of games anymore. I would prefer a strictly Space Sci-Fi game over the fantasy/magic types. With that said, SWTOR over GW2 hand down.

AND, "2-4 years" before we see SWTOR? Hardly. September of this year most likely. One of the devs even said it is "for sure in calendar 2011".  Won't be before July 1 as it is coming AFTER E3.

Let's party like it is 1863!

I'd say put your money where your mouth is, or in this case your left ball image

There is no way EA would allow any game to be that late and betting body parts isn't a good idea.

The game will release Q4 2011, ready or not. Maybe even Q3 but I think EA can live wih Q4.

"Mainstream" public is fickle as well tho...

I imagine TOR will have better initial sales but in the long run GW2 will do better. Ultimately they'll both enjoy a satisfactory but still limited sucess. In a month TOR sales and especially subscription retention will suffer a major fall. GW2 might start slower but it will enjoy steady sales.

From all what I've seen and read about the two games I find it highly ironic that BOTH made a miscalculation regarding their financial models. SWTOR is story-based and therefore more of a one-off experience. GW2 has a more long-term appeal in that it does not depend so much on the pre-written stories. Imo both will suffer for it - GW2 because they could make more money by raking in subs and SWTOR which depends on subs for returning the immensely bloated budget. Ultimately, SWTOR will flop because it won't be able to retain customers and GW2, while a success, won't be as profitable to its investors as it could have been.

Im ironical o, SWTOR would fare better if they went for a sub-less model with major content upgrades (sequels!!! story!!!) and GW2 did the subscription bit. The design philosophies behind the two titles absolutely dictate this. Sigh...

Neither got more votes than Both?  I gotta say, thats pretty bad on a gaming site that focuses on all kinds of games.  I love what TOR is bringing to the table and will likely play that for much longer than I play GW2,  but I know for a fact, unless these two games release on the very same day, or even a week apart, these are both, day 1 buys for me.

I just don't understand why so many want to put these games against eachother, when any true, varied, gamer (what I thought would be IGNs core base) would willfully play just about anything that seems remotely interesting.

  • whilanwhilan Member UncommonPosts: 3,472

dunno Masked maybe some people really don't want to play a certain game so they pick the one they do like.  Or more likely they see the two and pick the one they like without ever considering the other.

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

I think you're way off on this one.  You are pitting BioWares entire subscription on story alone **and if you were a regular BioWare gamer and only decided to see the story side of things, you'd have to be subscribed for at least nearly 2 months if you just played the stories alone for 24 hours straight based on the minimum of 200 hours per class story which doesn't include the same classes going down multiple paths both story and class wise, nor does that include end game content, group stories and world arcs, PvP, Space Content, or anything else.**  So if you were saying that personal story wouldn't keep players,  I think theres more than enough content there to do that,  but trying to say thats all SWTOR is, is just wishful thinking from someone who hopes SWTOR will fail somewhere.

Thats the box and the first month for the most hardcore, 24 hours a day player (which.. y'know,  you'd die from if you tried that.)   The player who playe 6 to 8 hours a day would take nearly 6 months just going through the story content,  and the personal story is only a small portion of the game.  The Developers said it best when they stated that the longevity of the game will never hinge on forcing the player to reroll a character.    You will be able to continue playing,  doing end game,  crafting,  exploring, all of that, and they have content to support that.  You will never be forced to reroll because you hit a wall where there is "nothing else to do".

I think its foolish to assume BioWare only created half of a game and slapped the name MMO on it.  While I think longevity in GW2 will be there,  I think you're sorely underestimating the longevity in SWTOR.

  • whilanwhilan Member UncommonPosts: 3,472

It's closer to a year if you take just the personal stories and a suitable time range.

I figure a gamer with a job and family can pull off 30 hours a week if they really wanted to.

At 30 hours a week it would take that gamer a little over a year to do the personal story alone for all 8 classes without ever touching the other stuff of the game...end-game included.

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Star Wars game developed by BioWare won the popularity poll? Who would have known...

  • Ramonski7Ramonski7 Member UncommonPosts: 2,662

The gaming (not mainstream) community is a helluva lot  bigger than the mmo community. So it's no suprise that TOR would win out against something a lot of gamers never even heard of like ArenaNET and Guild Wars. I swear the blissful ignorance on mmorpg.com never ceases to amaze me...

On one hand you have a developer that only makes mmos and on the other you have dev that has made games for the general gaming masses with a IP that dwarfs both of those playerbases combined.

I'm personally interested in both and I will gladly play both.  A big plus is I will only have one subscription fee. =)

    Wildstar (2013) & Elder Scroll Online (2013)

    Playing: Diablo 3, WOW, Far Cry 3 & X-Com.

Enjoyed: WOW 5 1/2 yrs, LOTRO 3yrs, GW 1/2yr, DFO 1yr, EVE Online 3yrs, and Huxley (Beta).

Failed to impress: GW2 3months, Tera Online 6 months (best combat system in any MMO I've played) STO 1/4yr, Aion 1/2yr, AoC 1yr, CO, Fallen Earth, DDO, EQ2 1/2yr, WAR 1/2yr, Lineage 2 and FF XI 1/2yr, FF XIV.

I doubt I will play TOR to be honest here, I might give a try next year sometime. But I prefer a fantasy setting (dull and old fashioned I know) and loved GW1 with a passion and take pride in Arenanets innovative attitude. They should be amazing games though, between them something to please everyone.
