Xsyon is scheduled to be officially released in the very near future. It's a game that many have been watching quite closely. MMORPG.com's Adam Tingle has spent some time tooling around Xsyon and has a terrific preview for our readers. Check it out and then let us know your thoughts, expectations and experiences in the comments.
I think you can tell immediately if a game is good by the amount of names it has, and Xyson: Earth 2012 - The Prelude is no exception. This MMORPG comes from the minds at Notorious Games, and will have anyone looking for a sandbox-come-survival simulator clutching at their crotch trying to stem the waves of orgasmic joy.

Having fun playing myself, will be glad when the final wipe comes and we can start progressing, this last week has been a tad bit frustrating while they sort out the problems
but fun fun fun still
edited for typos

I'm so glad this game is getting some coverage! If you're thinking about playing this game and indepth sandbox games are your thing. do yourself a favor and get Xsyon.
It's not perfect, still early in it MMO life with some bugs here and there and a few missing features, but the developers are VERY in touch with the community and often talk ingame or in IRC. I haven't had this much fun since I played Haven and Hearth!
really worth buying, already been playing for a while joined a tribe(Hopi :P). and you aint lieing either do stay stay away from the bears.
good to see an independent review. All of us fans have been saying its a good game, but you really have to take it with a grain of salt wahen fans review a game.
Can't wait for the final wipe to start rebuilding the world
I self identify as a monkey.
Nice graph
Another Hopi member here. Loving this game and the people in it. The most unique MMO I have ever been in.
My question :
How much time must you invest in game?
Is it only for hardcore players with lot of time on their hands ?
Have been in since March 2010, I can not get enough of the game. The game sucks you in from the very start from the landscape to the animal AI. The game is fun, exciting and just as real life every day is different, such it is in the game. The lack of tutorials I feel also adds the game itself, as the features suggest, and repeated in my sig.... if you were thrown into a new world with little to rely on... thus the game is in itself just that.
The community is one of the best I have seen in many years... come look at Xsyon and see if you have what it takes to survive!!

@Lobo
It is as much time as you want.. you can spend a few hours a week or a few hours a day.... that's the beauty of the game.... you decide what you want to do! It's a sandbox!!
Lobotomist: Building something big or raising your skill to the max is a grind. But if you can settle for something smaller, I'd say you could do well as a hunter, harvester or crafter even if you'd just log occasionally for 1-2 hours.
PS. I'm Hopi too
I am a subscriber to the game, and rather than blow sunshine up your behinds like others will, I will tell you straight. This game needs work. In fact in its current state, it's almost completely "sandbox" with very little "game". If you are looking for quests, instances, NPCs, guides, instructions, a clue, a myriad of mobs to battle, etc. you won't find them in Prelude. You are basically dropped off in the middle of nowhere, with no clue what you are doing. Good or bad? That is up to you.
Also, the game is in a state of fairly early development, in my opinion as a 16 year online gaming vet. This is a small indy game, and it isn't likely to see any real completeness or polish until next year some time. If you come to the game, you need to have this in mind. If you played Fallen Earth, and it felt clunky and frustrating to you, Xsyon isn't for you. The upside of this is that the devs are in DIRECT and nearly constant communication with the game's community. This is a nice breath of fresh air when compared to most other developers. Because of this, the player base has rightfully been very forgiving for pre-launch testing issues.
Having given fair warning, this game does have a very bright figure for those who want to get involved in a sandbox game that will have community as a core feature. The game seems to be an open book with a dynamic developer that is interested in what the players want. They have amazing plans for the future dev and expansion of the game, and it is pretty exciting to be involved with it. It's not going to just be about combat, but will feature deep crafting, trade, politics, community, and other aspects of a true sandbox game.
At this point, only time will tell where this game will be a year from now, but as someone who is dying for a great sandbox, even if it is an indy niche game, I find this one extremely promising.
A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.
I thought this was an open world PvP game? This review makes it sound like pure PvE.
So is this Darkfall with more Crafting, or a Tale in the Desert with PvE combat?
Was a pleasure having you with us Morris, great preview:)
Hope to see you ingame again // Arch
@PhelimReagh This game is more Darkfall with more of everything except the pvp part, sieges n stuff aint implemented and fighting over resources aint really working like it could.
The PvP in the prelude is pretty basic but its there and it creates abit of paranoia
The game features open world PvP (with some small safe areas for now). However, the game is a sandbox, and it will be heavily dependant on other features such as community, crafting, trade, etc. It is NOT Darkfall.

It is fool loot PvP. IF you get killed, they can take everything you own on the spot. So, you better keep on your toes all the time. I love it. BUT....if they take everything, they may become to heavy to move. LOL
I amnot a PvP'r, either.
+1 for Xsyon. The game is terrific. The company is terrific.
Anyone who goes into this expecting it to not be a perpetual beta though, is high.
It's a teeny indy company with astronomical aspirations, it's the nature of the beast.
What's there right now though, is a ton of fun. Find a tribe that you fit in with and you will likely be hooked for a good long time on this one
Xsyon is the most fun I have had with a mmorpg since UO and Shadowbane. Darkfall was fun too, but too short lived for me due to lack of content.
Hopefully the release next week will go smooth and we can get this thing up and running officially.

Great game thus far!
However, like previous posts have mentioned -- still in early development. The Devs and the Lead Dev (Xsyon himself!) have a lot of direct contact with the player community. Contact/communication is key in maintaining a good relationship with players/customers, IMO.
What makes this a great game, IMO?
1) The game is very free-form.
2) The player community is very diverse -- from a over the world, literally! There are Dutch, German, American, and Austrian players, just to name a few!
3) The Devs listen to the player community and make informed decisions while still maintaining the integrity of their MMO world.
Having said that, there are some down-sides, of course.
What needs improvement you might ask?
1) The crafting system needs some polish. Some things just don't make sense right now but they're being addressed/evaluated by the Devs.
2) Combat system is still very rough (being worked on).
3) Graphics need some polish. While the vistas are very cool, I think they could be better!
In conculsion, I think all the bumps in the road to official release are well worth it. The game has much promise and potential (but is very good right now!).
Just my two cents.
I'm a subscriber too and enjoyed the read, good article. I also enjoy Xsyon and believe it is the fresh take on MMORPGs that many have waited for so long. In my opinion Xsyon is the best attempt on a sandbox game since many, many years.
As others have said, however, a few words of warning can't hurt. The author already mentioned technical server issues, he was right to do so. The issues do exist. If you are a player that expects flawless operation and a high degree of polish, then I'd advise you to stay away from Xsyon for the moment.
Likewise, the game is good, very good, but it's also far from ready. Not everything is implemented yet and some of what is implemented can be buggy. Again: if you expect a full feature set from your games and if you're somebody likely to complain after purchase, then I'd also advise you to stay away from Xsyon for the moment.
Xsyon's combat currently is a placeholder that will be replaced in the coming months, tribal warfare isn't yet implemented and isn't scheduled for at least another 6 months. The alignment system isn't yet working as designed. Thus if you're a player that is used to focus on combat activities in your game (especially PvP), then I'd advise you to stay away from Xsyon yet again.
If you passed all these tests and are aware of Xsyon's current shortcomings, welcome. You may find that Xsyon is shaping up to the best sandbox game of the post-WoW MMORPG era.
I maintain this List of Sandbox MMORPGs. Please post or send PM for corrections and suggestions.
Nice expression, or nice typo, whatever it was.
But it's fitting, everybody playing Xsyon for combat is a fool, it really is a fool loot game.

Completely off topic, but their website need some prettifying..... from a online marketer prospective....
put mount & blade style combat in this game and I'm sold.
atm...
Your search - xsyon gameplay + combat - did not match any documents.
on google video with "past month" as only filter option. so no thanks.
definitely waiting for the final wipe, there isn;t much activity that we can do now except to wait
So What Now?
A fool loot game, ..oh this works for the pve and pvp side. hihi.. pve'er who do not leave the tools behind in the save tribal area ..and pvp'er who think this is jsut a other mo/df game full of mindless war.
Haha Im gona use it on the forums! ..
Anyway its a Fool loot game were buidling and relations between comunity will spar tribal warfare.
This game is far more UO SB DAoC then the modern MO and DF , its a true old school mmo in the making, the question will be if it remains that way. its a small piece of the entire mmo players that remember the true ballance between pvp and pve. most these days tend stick to one side.
Xsyon will have perma-death at some point in the future.
The death/alignment system has yet to be implemented
