Been playing the betas on this game and gota say i like it ...
People compare it to wow for obvious resons ..but lets face it wow is geting old and this is fresh and fun and for any wow fan is an easy to pick up and play game just what some people have been waiting on.
personaly im moving to this game from Aion for the PvP side because i love PvP and like the face to cast/skill system like what wow had as it adds skill aswell as bottons into PvP...anyone can bash bottons to win a fight but here if that person runs behind you or can keep your focus off them long enough anything is possible
Comments
Oh look he even compared it to wow...
Beta is what made me go from ready to preorder to waiting it out untill they make steps to balance the classes as a whole . Ill be damned if i preorder a game where i know half the classes are not competative.
All the 1-35 PVE in the world cant make up for a game with busted pvp mechanics at endgame, and possibly shunned classes come endgame pve raids...i need proof that these classes wont be all out of whack come endgame...since beta is curiously avoiding any endgame testing, im waiting untll at least a month after launch before jumping in. That says a lot since theres nothing else out there tbh. I really wanted to get into this game, but i see a lot of major issues down the road with Rift. Im not blinded by a polished 1-35 casual PVE, i can see further than that....
Honestly, I feel the same way about RIFT. Since the endgame will resemble the classic MMO raiding gig, folks are going to require min/maxing. This will be a serious challenge when you are faced with so much flexibility in choosing your 'souls' but only have 4 or 5 truly viable choices.
I feel I am out of touch with the old MMO feel as well. After the beta I won't be picking it up but I hope everyone who likes it enjoys it and has a blast! I'm glad a new company can open its doors and be successful. It gives hope to indie developers and more than just the large companies. I wish Trion the best and am glad it seems they listen to their followers.
Have Played: FFXI, WoW, Aion, DCUO

Not sure if you were able to catch all the parses from the last beta, on Rifts private beta section of the forums.
That subsection is no longer there....however Warrirors led the DPS and burst DPS charts in melee combat as well as spell casting (thats right spell casting)
Warriors ranged DPS (through Riftblade attacks) out burst DPS even marksman and range rogues.
The botton of every DPS comparision parse was the lowly mage, not even close in most cases. Even clerics were out DPSing them.
So go with a cleric for healing survivability, support, and DPS, or warrior for best DPS in game and best tanking ability (often at the same time if the right souls are active)
Who would have though that giving every class high DPS would result in the classes with build in survivability doing it best?? Now take that thought and just apply the high DPS to those classes with survivability... Good to be a squishy in game when your ONLY purpose is to die in pvp, with no means to fighting back (ok mages can squirrel and run...woot)
If this isnt fixed, i cant see a majority of the population staying past first month. Wait untill the elitest jerk style raids start hating on anyone not pulling their weight...
Edit:
Im actually finding great refuge in Anarchy Online, didnt expect to get back into it after all these years...might be there instead of rift open beta (dependant on what efforts are made to bring the squishy classes into competativness)
Already people requiring certain setups before dungeon attempts. It's sad...especially considering how easy all the PvE content is compared to any other MMO i've played (never did WoW other than beta).
By the time people start getting to endgame after launch, the top guilds will already have worked out which classes and soul combinations in a raid will maximize the goup efforts. Just hope you didnt choose a class that CANT get onto that list...no matter how good of a player you are.
We have already seen some of their work in the beta specific rift forums. Its sad to see, in an othewise polished game, class balaincing issues that seem to have been created by a developer team consisting of die-hard warriors and clerics. WHy on earth would you make a tank warrior out SPELL CAST DPS a mage, or burst range dps a marksman...it seems to serve no purpose.
You can never not choose a class that won't make it onto the raiding list. You have 1/4th of the overall possibilitys to play for a raid group. Unless they are excluding every single mage (which is unlikely with the heavy CC role or the heavy buff/debuff role which will be the most important). You can change your roles at will so you cannot be excluded from a raid list technically because you can just switch out classes.
I play mage and destroy in pvp with certain roles. They are definatly not a dps class until higher level when the bonus points come into play for a lot more bonus damage.
Unless you choose a squishy class, which has none of the survivability as the cleric and warrior class. When a warrior can compete head on with the far squishier rogue souls, and blows any mage dps soul out of the water...as will any cleric DPS build.
Saying that all classes has a definite use in a raid is wishfull thinking, overlooking all the parses that came back from the last beta proving just how useless a squishy class that cant use DPS as a means of defense.
Did you even try the mage and rogue classes?
I can see rouges mabey out DPSing warriors come launch, as they keep buffing them and slightly nerfing warriors...however the lowly mages doesnt sweem to have a single group role that a cleric or warrior, or even rogue cant do far superior, excluding the ruge class, all the other competing DPS builds have built in survivability not found in the squishy "one top DPS" classes (in other games at least)
The mage class only "destroys" in pvp for two scenarios...one is you racking up AOE damage, that is too weak to kill, so they live, get healed and those DOT's and weak AOE's just keep racking up damage, OR the people your fighting are highly incompetant, and leave you there to spam damage, which can add up...mind you a mage doesnt posees ANY burst DPS mechanics, meaning any class can kill you far faster than you can kill them....they have to let you kill them.
Also, a mage isnt the only class with CC, classes with other uses have them as well, and any mage team buff is not only weaker than bard/clerics, but they get overwritten by bard and cleric buffs, they dont stack, on top of that archon team buffs come at YOUR expense. They are planning to nerf the archon soul further as well.
I get what people are saying concerning raiding and dungeons and being forced into using certain setups. The true beauty of the system is, for soloing and just general fun you still have the option to play what the hell you want.
It is all about adapting!
At least you will have 4 sets of configs to switch between, raid, dungeon, solo, fun :P
Bear in mind the game even 6 months down the line will be starkly different from the current beta status. If trion are worth their salt (and they do appear to listen to us), then underplayed classes will eventually get altered and most likely revamped.
Just remember with mmo's the beta test never stops. (unless the devs go afk ofc :P)
Interesting.
First, you can change your souls building just clicking at a button.
Second, sorry, but Rift is a PvE centered game, sorry you want they make a PvP centered game. The game will be balanced for PvE and it is what is happening.
Third, endgame is PvE (advanced dungeons, raid rifts and raid instances) and not PvP. For that PvP raids the changes are working well.
The fact is that you know too few about the game, because you don't know about you can change roles with a click.
But why does fun have to be separated from raid/dungeon? If I played primarily a DPS mage as I dont want to be a healer, and a group tells me to be a chloro, I tell them to go find another person. Letting people be everything infers the needs to be specially something, which I think is a bad decision.
This is not necessarily a design flaw, it's a people flaw. I agree there can be such a thing as too much freedom of choice, at the end of the day though it is down to the level of maturity of the people you end up playing along side.
Ultimately the player should find others in the game with a similar mind set. Once a player finds their true calling within the game, they can let others know what they are comfortable with. You pretty much already stated this(highlighted in green for ya :P).
Its a major design flaw.
Wait untill our "i want to be a DPS mage only" guy find out that not only are warriors and rogues out DPSing them, but also clerics....
Im like that guy, i go glass cannon mage...every game for my main. Rift currently only has glass cannon painball guns for mages.
The flaw here is letting every class be a high DPS class, without consideration to the damage to survivability ratio so important for balance. To make matters worse, its not just a matter of the survivability classes doing enough damage to dash a squishy faster than they can kill them...but we have now a situation where tanks were topping the DPS parses by a lot.
The beta DPS parses went as follows Warriors>Rogues>>Clerics>>>>>>>>Mages
Warriors are Roges were somewhat close, but even if a rogue can slightly out DPS a warrior...why give up all that armor and HP for a small increase in DPS? Squishies need the ability to make up for their lack in defense with DAMAGE, not just any damamge but fast damage....unless your not interested in balanced pvp or even enjoyable pvp mechanics later on.
For those of you familiar with warhammers "Magus" class...mages as a whole are turning out to be just like that games "most useless and shunned endgame class".
Class balance will be the reason people are leaving Rift a month into launch.
There is no way to completely balance classes in a game that offers as much freedom as Rift does.
They have balanced somethings as beta has gone along, but you have to expect that balance is mostly going to be nerfing of very overpowered abilities and buffing of very underpowered ones, rather than an effort to make sure that every character is balanced against every other character.
The good thing is that they make it cheap and easy to alter your builds. As you progress, you can even aquire the other souls for your archetype, beyond the first three and you can have multiple builds set up that you can easily switch between, even while out in the field.
This puts responsibility on the players to make use of the options available to make fun, playable characters that fir their play styles.
I'm certain there will be many community vetted builds that will be posted for people who don't want to experiment and build on their own. So, even though it may be possible to "gimp" youself with a build, there will be plenty off access to builds "that work". Coupled with the way the game supports the ability to change builds quickly and easily, I really don't see the problem.
It will be important for Trion to ensure that none of the archetypes are much more powerful than the others and that each soul offers it's own merits. I have no reason to doubt that this will be the case.

I think part of the problem is that you are assuming that all Warriors are tanks, all Rogues are melee DPS, all Mages are ranged DPS and all Clerics are healers.
You can build different roles with in each Archetype, depending on how you put your character together.
I like to play Healers. I find it sort of cool that there are healing options among all the four Archetypes and that the character build I'm leaning towards for my Healer main in Rift is actually a Mage! (Chloro/Warlock/Necro).
If individual skills are over/under powered, I'm sure they will be adjusted. However, I think players also need to adjust their perceptions and not assume that the best build for their play style is going to fall under the same class label they find in most other MMORPGs.
BTW, I haven't seen any serious theorycrafting on the game yet, nor have we seen characters at high levels. It's very possible that gear/stat coefficients will push advantages to particular archetypes that aren't as clear at lower levels and with our current gearing.

Man I can't wait for this game either.
As for all those that believe everything they read from the crazed anti-rift posts....please do the research yourself.
Here are some Myths about rift you may or may not hear
MYTH 1. 'There is no engame content being tested'
False: There has been Alpha testers since before Beta 1. They have 24/7 access to the game and can play to lvl cap of 50. (not I am not one of them).
MYTH 2. 'Classes are too unblanaced for PVP'
False: Most of those saying this have only been in beta 6 where Trion made alot of class changes from the previous 5 betas. It has already been announced that there will be further class changes before beta 7.
Furthermore, if you are planning on buying Rift to pvp then you will be sorely dissapointed, They have announced that class balance will be based off of PVE NOT PVP. So any changes to classes will be for pve balance they have said this is their focus. They plan on letting the pvp blanance flesh itself out.
Everything here is correct, except the PvP balance... there are PvP souls that are meant to balance PvP. Also, not every soul is viable in PvP, you aren't going to be trying to kill someone by using a healing soul...
It is odd to see people talking about class imbalances as if they were permanent when beta testing is not even done. Each 4 day beta I've seen has had several patches, and the devs always listen to feedback.
I personally have faith in them, as they have not let me down yet. No need to see the world through piss colored glasses. Until they trash the game with something huge, I have no reason to think they will.
And more on topic, me and my wife cannto wait for the 24th lol. The open beta will be nice, but I dont wanna spend too much time on a toon that will get wiped.
My god has horns.... nah, I don't think he is real either.
I really prefer chloro/warlock/elementalist over chloro/warlock/necromancer. The 0 point pet for elementalist is tank, while the 0 point pet for necromancer is dps. But that thing resume to personal tastes.
Both choices above will work as healer at a dungeon. By the way, my group role is chloro/archon/dominator and my solo role is necromancer/warlock/choro. The solo role works fine as dps inside a dungeon.
And the necromancer have the advantage to change pets for a very strong tank pet, the knight. I guess that lementalist have same advantage too. And who not likes an warlock?
All this is not for change the theme... it is for show that htere are more viable builds than we can get. sometimes, it is a matter of personal tastes.
Rogues were topping the parse in beta 6 and by far. You must have been with some individuals that decided their build was prime and should work best. This is not the case in rifts and sadly to say not EVERY COMBINATION is the highest dps in the history of rifts. Learn how posions work, then adjust that as one of your sub classes, and build your rogue off that.
I too am pumped for this game.
I'm sure they'll work out the class balance somewhat, it's beta afterall. The fact that the same classes can play on either faction makes class balance somewhat mute. I think a good melee warrior should be able to pvp and win most 1v1's with other non-warriors. But guys, most PVP battles aren't 1v1, and there are other factors....who surprised who? Was the victim engaged w/a mob? Is it a 2v1 or a 3v2? Is someone getting 60 fps on their gaming rig while the other guy is stuttering @ 5ps?
Also, I think worrying about end-game mechanics w/min maxers 3 weeks before the game launches is also silly. This company has proven, to me at least, that they are responsive and will work out the kinks. Does anyone remember conan pre-launch? 50 times the hype and some of the worst dev response you'll ever see. ((That game is STILL a bugged out mess))
Yes, I remember AoC pre and post launch. It was a nightmare. So many bugs and the fixes seemed to come at a snail's pace. Getting a GM was near impossible. RIFT's beta 6 I needed GM assistance and had a response within 30 seconds, literally. I was pretty impressed.
I am on the can't wait boat myself. Finally settled on the builds I'll be testing. I am leaning on 2 different heal builds (cleric), 1 offtank and 1 pvp/solo. Warden tree maxed is just too enticing... I really like the idea of mobility healing.
Great plan! Wait a month, until the starter zones are empty, so you can complain about, the starter zones being empty?
No, you really can't. At least not yet.
