Hi all,
I have played EvE several times over the years, usually for a few months at a time, but then i just stop and have no desire to log in anymore (a very common complaint).
I love the idea, i love the UI, i have a mind that needs CONSTANT bashing, i don't switch off and have an insane attention to detail. All qualities that make me perfect for this game.
However...
The big issue here is, i need a reason to do these things...a purpose. I have been in several corps, mostly good, but mostly low-sec with only one in 0.0 (but had only just setup a POS, didn't do anything).
The best one was my last one, a good pirate corp. It was at war with several other alliances and there was quite a bit of action in low-sec.
My issue was, it was all for the sake of it and therefore, it got dull after a while. So i blow up some ships, station camp a bit, chase people around different systems, scout for enemies. All well and good, but to what end? To me, it's like playing a sports game - really good fun, try new things, you enjoy the success. But after a short while, it's just instant gratification and the time you have invested has not progressed anything.
It applied to other things. I have about 16 mil SP, all thoroughly researched to fly a handful of ships well, so i wasn't working towards anything else. I had enough ISK from PLEX cards, so didn't even have to grind for that (made my experience last alot longer).
So obviously as anyone can see, i need goals. Granted, i should create some, but as you can see, there isn't much in the way of personal goals to achieve other than get rich or kill more.
So, after about a year and being intrigued by the game again, i have come to the conclusion that what i missed was being part of something much bigger - The politics and glory of alliance warfare. It's the top level that i never reached and gives purpose to ALL of the things i have mentioned above. And most importantly, doing it together with other players for one cause.
So why am i posting all this if i know the answer? Simple - players like me will not have access to this content. The big corps and alliances wouldn't take me, the ones that would consider me would question if i am a spy. EVEN if a corp with access to this kind of content accepted me in, it would be weeks of ass-licking, proving my worth and acting like the game is my life for me to be included in it.
So, is there another way? Everything any player on these forums says good about this game is based around this 0.0 warfare - it gives purpose to what you do and the time you invest. Blowing up ships for nothing can only last so long.
Failing that, if anyone knows of a very good corp to take me in. I am all or nothing in everything i do, so if given some respect and treated equally, i would invest alot of time into it (especially at work )
Cheers,

Sov warfare has been thoroughly murdered by CCP. You vastly overestimate your importance, or indeed the importance of sov.
With that said, even without a supercapital there are still corporations that will take an ambitioned newbie. Keep looking, but be aware that you might want to look for those in alliances that do not make much noise about their recruitment.
I can't quite relate to the "nobody's going to recruit me". Unlike in rl, people are often willing to give you a chance if you're just a genuinely pleasant person to have around. Hanging around in public channels of some corporations really helps with that.
Well i can talk my way into just about anything irl or ingame, so didn't really have issues with corps rejecting me. But, i know for the more political aspects of the game, they go a bit over the top and treat you like an employee or expendable pawn.
Basically, the players who have been playing for years are involved deep into the game and have genuine reasons to login, not just fly around and look for something to do. That's basically what i am looking for, a purpose. Unlike other games, this game relies on that, it doesn't provide much inherent fun, only when you are actively engaged with other groups of people.
I used to goto the gym, but i am my ideal weight and have no health problems, so the 'looking hot' aspect wasn't enough for me, so i stop. At work, if i am not involved or i am cut out of the loop, then i lose the motivation to participate. I am not in the market of time-wasting, i hate it, so everything has to have reasons behind it..
..EvE seems such a game that can provide that.
You are looking for fun in eve in the wrong place. Null sec corps and alliances are the way to go if you like being a peon ordered around by dictators at the top of the food chain. Null sec politics and drama are the height of boring. Go play in null sec if you want to be a slave for the "greater good" (aka making the bosses of the alliance rich instead of yourself).
I know what you mean, but the most fun to be had in EvE on record was pirating, hunting down gate after belt after station, over and over. Doesn't matter if i end up with 500 billion ISK, what use is it to me? Buy more ships?. That's my issue, no matter how deep the game seems to be, in reality, it's all about making ISK unless you get into the politics..or so it seems.
You make it sound like the people who have been in the alliances for ages log in. Cute thought.
For quite a lot of people (me included) an alliance is a staging point for all kinds of shenanigans inside and outside of eve. Mine, for me, is mostly a social forum to play magicka/minecraft/hon/wot together with some space holding and pvp attached. I can understand your quest for "purpose", but I think you're vastly overestimating the thrill of a 0.0 that sees change mostly because of alliances collapsing due to mismanagement or internal apathy. Long term players are usually pretty disillusioned and log in to socialize and blow up random people.
There are some alliances currently fighting for something: atlas., aaa, initiative and the like. But I'd imagine even for them, the reason they stay together is because they like doing stuff with each other primarily. Otherwise they'd implode as soon as their goals are not met. There are some small corporations living in npc 0.0, usually purely for the brawls with other small corporations with the same goal.
But as a general rule of thumb, the older the alliance, the more laid back it usually is, having outlived the ambitioned ones running against walls and breaking.
Getting into a corp without getting treated like a pawn is easy, just stay away from the obvious mass recruitment alliances and look for the low profile corps with little membership fluctuations.
Btw., It'd own if I were an employee for my corp! I'd love getting paid for logging in to bitch at corpmates and to adjust market orders / organize some logistics.
tl;dr I've lost my train of thought, but by corp minecraft server is pretty neat. I built this during two long alliance ops.
Thank you for the insight. It is difficult to get an unbiased view on this game, especially as i am someone who neither loves it or hates it. I want a deep, complex and intelligent game that will keep me intrigued, demanding more from me as time goes on. A sort of time investment like a long-term hobby. Like with any social hobby though, i can understand that after a while, you join in because you enjoy playing with your friends, not the hobby itself.
I could see myself making alot of this game if i joined a very social, active corp with a good sense of humour. But at the same time, not elitist and want to do things together as a corp. I am playing Fallen Earth atm, it has some good ingredients, but has no social interaction, so it is dead to me now. I think a long-term goal of using some RL skills to pull off some epic business or scam could be a good way to go.
This will be interesting if the poster is in fact a mole. Real interesting. LOL
MAGA
Aw, I like FE. Played it for a while and still like it. I always imagined it would be very fun to play with a group, but yeah, not many incentives to go out there. FE with the empire building of Eve would keep me entangled for a long time.
By the way, don't get me wrong on the motivational and goal part. Every organization that has been around for a while has some common goal and vision. Most are nowadays build on providing a base for all sorts of fun activities (see test or goons, built mostly around forum posting and thinking of hilarities to inflict onto themselves or others). People have come to avoid the previously common goals of acquiring an outpost, taking sov or conquering territory due to how the game has changed, and how social groups react if they do not meet their expectations. (Read: overly elaborate goals tend to rip apart groups during the blame game phase, so people learned and the successful groups are built onto something that does not primarily have something to do with eve itself to ensure long term stability)
So yes, as you might have figured out, Eve is very interesting as a social testing ground and particularly great for people with an interest in social dynamics. :P
If you're REALLY looking for a purpose then you could always form up you're own corp.. I know its hard work, but you'd skip the whole "trial"-member feel you get from joining corps as a new player and you could lead it into a 0.0 alliance eventually im sure too..
It'd be too much work for me to pursue personally but each corp needs a leader and who knows you might enjoy building something from the ground up.

Yes, annoys me a little how purposely they made the game solo. Have yet to see anyone group up in the game. Post-apoc or not, it doesn't even have a running economy, so it loses all aspects that make MMO's long lasting.
I very much see what you mean now, i am more about the social thing than the content, but it still must involve something to do. Star Wars Galaxies was like this, would hang out in cantina's chatting. Then we would go "lets annoy the neighbours" and attack their town. Come to think about it, it was identical to this, that was all so repetitive, but it was about challenging people and making a name for yourself, living the world. It is alot harder in EvE though, as it can be difficult to connect with a ship, plus you can't just travel to a planet and walk about, chat and see who's around. It can feel extremely lonely visually in EvE, which did cause me alot of issues.
Definately need a plan, can't just jump in, i'm sure i can come up with some sort of business/scam/model to use.
I did think of that in the past, but it's just too much in this game. You will have players who expect something from the corp, others that just logon once a month. I don't have the resources, connections or experience to do that. Needs to be formed around a good core of people who know each other ingame really.
But the management/client building side might be interesting. As i mentioned above, some sort of niche business, offering a service.
For example, i work for a facilities management company as an Account Manager. We have contracts with a major data management company to manage issues they have on their sites, such as electrics, A/C, plumbling, heating and anything they can possibly want or need, from bins to PC's. However, we ourselves rarely provide any of these services; we send out sub-contractos who do the work, then we mark it up, then invoice the client company the cost.
...We effectively make money by just arranging stuff. There's obviously more to it than that, but thats the bare bones of it. As we speak, i am compiling a quote for a couple of sites to be refurbished, with eletrical tests, new walls, etc. I am sub-contracting alot of it out, getting parts from suppliers, then doing this complicated calculation:
(Get total costs for everything possible * 1.2
Imo, this would be so possible in EvE, the bastard middle-man, making money for nothing.
Edit: Now i think about it, it would require a regular turnover of 'contractors' to accomplish, as unlike real-life, people won't be content with getting a steady income or a cut after a while. Longer a player plays, the better rewards he will get from elsewhere. So, an ambiguous advert for work in the starter areas maybe once a week. Build up a client base. Hmm, this will take some thought lol.

It's really not difficult to get a character into a big nullsec alliance. I start new characters all the time to use as spies and have been able to get in several corps without too much effort. Find an alliance that you're interested in and check out their corporations' description for recruiting info and convo the recruiters.
This!
I still hang out on TS with my old corps, have a jump clone with one of them to fly with them from time to time. This is because they were all small enough that I'd consider all of them freinds and despite moving on still chat to them outside game.
BTW the Elite thing is a bit of a red herring, corps / alliances that may appear arrogant are often very friendly, infact of the last 3 alliances I've been in the one that was by far the worst was also the only one that was overun by annoyingly arrogant people. The 'pro PvP' alliances may work hard to maintain an outward appearance, but internally they can be pretty chilled as everyone tends to have pretty similar priorities.
Hi,
Yea I'm pretty much the same as you as it happens. Played for several years but only for a few months off and on each year, usually around expansions
If I'm honest probably the only thing thats going to keep you motivated is if you actually start your own corp ! Even if its just a pve corp in high sec helping out new players, its very rewarding. Or joining a noob corp and helping them out.. there are lots of new players out there who could benefit from your help.
Personally, all I'm doing at the moment is doing a few lvl 4 missions solo in a popular mission hub and when the mood hits me i'll offer the wrecks to new players in local who are eternally gratfull.
Really, all Im doing is just making money until Incarna is released, thats probably when I'll get into eve in a bit way.. until then Im just saving my money for that time.
I was bored to death with Eve until I tried living in wormhole space. Every day is something new due to the random nature of w-space.
I was bored to death in w-space after i noticed that it's basically just macro miners, anomaly runners and ganksquads, and nothing else.
Plus, no wormholes for days and no sites...spinning ship with nothing to do.
Yea wormhole space can get pretty boring if you dont have a good sized active corp.
but thats pretty much like everything in eve
I have the odd feeling that you are trying to make EVE your second life. Nontheless there is so much to do in EVE, that i cant imagine someone getting bored due to lack of activities.
But you'll easily be bored because how much repetitive some activities can be...
(Bored to death because of trading. Made 1B in about 18h, but really boring...)
I'm french, that's why I sometimes mis-use or mis-spell some words... Please don't blame me.
(but feel free to explain my error if you want

I agree really, its not that there is a 'lack of things to do' but humans need a reason for doing something.
If there is no reason, then there is no reward and you get bored because you feel your life start wasting away.
i just found out that a friend has started playing again, and now suddenly im more interested in Eve, even if its just to chat to a mate and do things together. makes all the difference
I run missions for 3 months and only that ( i got my reasons) and i still havent been bored It looks like its pretty individual, but some people require a lot from just one game.. I, for example, dont play only EVE, i also play League of Legends and Warcraft 3 custom maps. Noone said that when you play EVE, you have to play ONLY EVE. The game is pretty similar to real life - it is what you make of it.
You should easily be ready for level 4's now.
I know someone who did level 3's for about 4-5 months, took me ages to convince her to go up to level 4's, when I eventually did she made more in a few weeks that she did doing lvl 3's.
But then she had so much money she got bored, with no corp or regular friends she had nothing really to spend the money on, she didnt want to pvp because she didnt want to lose her money. Its a sad tale that happens frequently to eve players. you just GOT to dive into a 0.0 corp at some point.
But anyway, yea a lot of people can split their attention between games, and I respect people who can do that. I just find that when I start enjoying a game I dont want that enjoyment to stop, which it does if I even consider playing another game. Or, if I DO play another game I just find I dont enjoy it as much.
