It's an Illness ...

Don't know why I've ended up having a several day stint here on the forums at mmorpg.com, every time I do it I get depressed (relatively speaking of course - I'm actually not all that bothered about this, just relatively slightly bothered image ).

I get depressed because it makes me realised there are a whole bunch of sad people like me who are chasing their tails trying to recapture a magical experience that can never be recaptured.

There can be only one "first time".

So what do we do?  We jump from game to game, from hype to hype, hoping to get that high, that fix.  And we do get it, for maybe a few weeks, a month, a couple of months, because when a game is new and fresh, it does somewhat recapture that feeling.

And then it fades.

And then ... oh boy - do the developers get the vengeance.  Sometimes justified, but more often not justified at all, a veritable howling gale of vengeance, quite out of all proportion to the context.

All the vengeance of an addict in withdrawal.

The devs can't win.  We can't win.  It's hopeless.

It's nostalgia playing tricks on you.

It's like a past girlfriend you moved on from. You remember the good times but conveniently forget all that nagging and arguing you had with her. You just remember the sex and the cooking.

    I dont agree.

I do feel that the time between those 'ah ha!' moments can easily be years but for me I had one in 2002 with Neverwinter nights and Morrowind and another in 2008 with Darkfall. I am now back to the 'blaa' stage and I honestly dont think I am going to get another one of those moments for a few more years.

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

I had that experience three times.  First when I started playing Earth & Beyond as my first ever MMORPG.  Then I had another oen when I started playing WoW.  My last one was when I started A Tale in the Desert.

I feel much with you. My first magical moment was SWG, had a great community and much fun. It may be tricks of memory, that we idolize them like the "first love", but I am also sure things changed, and not for better.

So we cling to hope. :/

Hahaha! I don't think I've ever heard a better analogy. The same most certainly holds true with MMORPGs.

Well, except for the fact that there's a serious lack of the sex part when involved with MMOs and the cooking part gets completely reduced to any edible substance that can fit in a microwave.
