I just really don't see Rift being all that successful either. It does nothing particularly noteworthy (Rift grinding will get old), and it's going to be released way to close to three upcoming MMORPGs that will absolutely destroy it in terms of box sales and subscriber numbers.
TERA is loseing its hype and look less and less interesting,
lmao,yes,sure.
The game right now is a hit,35 servers all packed.
And it doesn't even have grind, there are several players at lvl 40+ after 5 or 6 days of gameplay, they never ran out of quests.
Rift is loosing all the hype,of course, who wants another wow clone?
I agree with the OP. Rift will have a small success at release, but will die off within a few months and people will go back to their previous game, realizing there's not much to do, the game is very very linear and lacking replayability.
No they won't go back to their original games because even if Rift isn't overly groundbreaking.... it's still the best thing going and better than everyone's current game!
You forgot "in my opinion" in your post...
I saw dozens of posts like yours for Age of Conan, for Warhammer, Aion too... people where looking at the shiny new things with blind faith, saying it's the best thing since sliced bread... see how it ended

Um, if I am not mistaken, Tera didn't wipe beta characters so they were already a higher level when it launched.
And if Rift is losing its hype, then why did so many people play beta 5 and they have to open tons of new servers?
You are right, people played 5 events of 2 days.
10 days + 3 days after launch,so in 13 days you can reach lvl 40-42.

hardly enough to make people give up their 7 year old raid toons in WoW
For me Rift will have been fun if it holds my attention for 6 months. I don't ask a lot more of any MMO I play. There is always going to be new games coming out and frankly playing anything for 7 years is just not me. I'm in a position where I can afford to pay for and sub to as many games as I feel like. I can see why the choice of whether to jump on board is more critical for people with limited finances. I played WoW from launch until just after burning crusade, where I was burned out. I tried it again recently and I certainly don't regret using four more years of my precious gaming time on other pursuits. In that time i've had a chance to experience so many other games.
I'm a big fan of Bioware and Arenanet so I am positive I will play both their games when they come out.
It's funny that the very reason you cite for people not leaving WoW is the very reason I think they will. If not to Rift, to Tera, if not GW2, if not TOR, etc., It's clear you love WoW, are maybe even a bit of a fanboy (ironic considering some of your earlier posts) but I'm happy enough to chat with you again in December 11 and we'll see which of us is right. The game is being released next month. No matter how much testing gets done and no matter the feedback, the game will not change. It's simply too late for any significant game changes.
The most we can expect are a few bug fixes and class balance.
too true. but the comments about invasions and rifts getingin the way of questing due to how often they happen is a result of stress testing. As you know it will not truely be able to be judged in that aspect till the testing is done. We have not seen the entire game yet.
Do you thing people are really going to listen to the "Next Gen" "Dynamic Content" hyperbole?
Rifts aren't dynamic content. It's still static spawn points - but instead of spawning single monsters, it generates a number of monsters over time.
Real dynamic content would have mobs travel all over the world, migrations, and players not finding the same mobs at the same place again once they exterminated them. Rifts are just random static content, but randomness doesn't automatically make something dynamic.
Mobs do travel over the zones, DO your research before opening your mouth.
Your signature explains why you will never except a new MMO. Nothing will be like UO.

About rifts getting in the way of questing, I think it comes to personal preference. Being in a dynamic world is not for everyone it seems, as some don't like to be disturbed when they are questing or gathering.
Your point was that rifts are either getting in your way or are something you don't want to do every time you log in. It was just one giant wall of text stating that the rifts are more bothersome to your playstyle because they hinder what you want to do in game.
Thing is you don't have to chase down every rift, stop every invasion and defeat every foothold. You can ignore them and just go run dungeons, grind mobs or quest. Biggest annoyance is the people who complain about games being boring and lifeless and far too safe are the same people complaining that Rift is too lively, hectic and far too dangerous. You want to know why devs stick to a single formula (ie the 'make it like WoW' one)? Because no matter what they do these same players won't ever be happy. It's a case of Damned if they do and damned if they don't, hence why they tend to just go the path of least resistance...
And as to the title; The game functions fine. It does what it set out to do and does it well. Sure its not the most revolutionary MMORPG on the market, but it's fun to play and works awesomely. Even the biggest revolutions in history were merely just babysteps in the grand scheme of things.
well said mr fyerwall i agree completely , you just can't make people happy at all, everyone is afraid of something new.
Personally I saw different periods, in the last beta, where there seemed to be fewer Rifts taking place, and some times where there were what I thought were too many... But then this is still a beta and I'm not sure what the pace of this sort of thing will be for Release.
As for "leaving some other game"... that doesn't apply to me. I left WoW long ago, and Cryptic did a superb job of ruining STO. So I haven't been playing any MMOs lately. And I still tend to suspect that other titles, like SWTOR will be delayed. So I don't just want to wait for them. Then again, only time will tell.
If Trion can avoid nerfing the "stuffing" out of my characters, just because some jerks are QQing on the forums. I think I might actually like this game enough to stick with it. But I don't fault you for having reservations. I will admit that I tend to be leary of MMOs in general because I've been burned so many times.
Mobs do travel over the zones, DO your research before opening your mouth.
Haha they do WHAT? Oh please! Give up the spreading of false information. There is no migration, no population movement, mobs always spawn exactly in the same areas. If you have wolves in a place, they will always be there, no matter how many players kill.

Pretty much describes all PvE content in every mmo. Anything that respawns is bound to become boring eventually. The rifts do invite/demand cooperative play, which is new to the genre I think. Warhammer has its public quests, but those were optional, whereas farming rifts may be a requirement.

'deus ex machina' It refers to an entity who appears from nowhere and resolves a seemingly impossible issue. I normally wouldn't nitpick, but since I'm studying theater and drama, this phrase has come up several times. Just wondering if your use of it is actually applicable in this situation. o_O
'deus ex machina' It refers to an entity who appears from nowhere and resolves a seemingly impossible issue.
I perfectly know what that expression means, and I used it intentionally.
Rifts, for some, seems to be the "deus ex machina" resolving some crucial MMO problems, and introducing some dynamisms in an otherwise totally static world. And just like most "deus ex machina" in movies and theaters, it's in reality a cheap imitation, a poor solution. Adding real dynamism is too hard for the developers? Nevermind, just add some magical portals coming out of nowhere, which are in reality just monster spawn generators, and call it "dynamic content".

I don't know about you but I've never seen a game with a "real dynamic world," and I've played every MMO out here over the past decade and change.
The closest thing I have seen/experienced is EvE online with territorial control via PvP, and the recent Incursion expansion is a promising step in the right direction too for dynamic PvE.
A truly "real dynamic world" would be much more simulation then game, and I for one enjoy games because they are games, not real world simulations.
I'd never want to play a game where my character starves to death because I don't have 12 hours a day to spend farming and hunting animals before they are hunted to extinction.
These grand concept type of ideas sound amazing on paper, but how would you actually implement something like that in a virtual world in a way that would 1. be possible to code 2. be possible to run on modern hardware and 3. offer any sort of enjoyment what so ever?

This was exactly my thought on rifts in the time I played the beta. Rifts don't really seem dynamic, they are just mob spawners that appear, you kill everything in stages (like in the most simplistic WAR PQs), and it closes.
Everything else in the game is a cut and paste job from other PvE themeparks. Very polished, no doubt, but also very redundant within the MMO space.
