Depends on what your definition is of "too much hype"... ?
Exactly, hype is just how excited people are for the game and how many people are excited for it (in my opinion). People decide what the hype is, and if it has a high hype, well then people are excited for it!
There is never too much hype. If people are excited and in anticipation for a game that could change the foundation of MMORPGs then they should be hyped. You may not be interested in this game but others are and it is not nice to tell people that they shouldn't be excited. I am definitely aroused.
The expectations are crazy high. Seriously, imagine that guildwars 2 launches and it's a complete FAIL due to server, mechanics, balance, etc..
Can you imagine how many people would go FPS, anarchy on mmorpg forums, the mass suicide!!! Expectations, clearly, are too high because honestly: GW2 is "too big to fail". I think the government will bail it out, if it flops, to prevent global chaos.
Imho there is too much hype. Not that I'm not excited for this game, but reading the forums here on mmorpg.com makes me think that some people's expectations are way out of line already. Every anticipated titel gets ripped apart on this site, because it doesn't completely live up to some peoples ridiculous expectations, and this won't be different for GW2.
I'd rather keep my excitement on a somewhat realistic level and not belong to the people, who waited 3 years for a titel just to hate them for not being able to completely live up to the hype.
I've been hyped about this game ever since they announced the project. As the slow release of information about GW2 has come, my excitement has grown even more. Is it too much? I don't think so, but it is getting close. I just don't want to see the same sort of mentality from GW2 fanboys as there already is with WoW fanboys.
All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.
I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.
It may be over-hyped, but it's not really wrong or right. In this case, hype is just measured against the other upcoming MMO's.
A game rated at 8.70 is just about average. Like-wise with movies, 8/10 is just alright. BUT, compared to other games on here, its is high. It just means the average mass (on this site) are looking forward to GW2 more than other games. It's hard to calculate because GW2 has a low number of hype votes.
well i think there is a difference between hype/excitement and expectations personaly im off the scales hyped about this game and hope it will blow me away. however i know that it could very well end up being the worst piece of crap mmo to be put together (although the evidence seems to say that the chances of that are incredibly slim so much so as to not be worth mentioning).
the way i see it the hype is fine its peoples stupid expectations that could cause problems people need to understand that there is always the chance for something to go horribly horribly wrong and try not to get upset when it does.
if it turns out the game is crap-tastic... well i had fun with the hype
What I always say about GW2 hype is; IT IS REAL! and then about too much expectation; It will be quelled after the first tutorial, if not.... you must have had some crazy, crazy expactations.

Can you imagine how many people would go FPS, anarchy on mmorpg forums, the mass suicide!!! Expectations, clearly, are too high because honestly: GW2 is "too big to fail". I think the government will bail it out, if it flops, to prevent global chaos.
The last time i saw this amount of hype (excluding the new star wars) we ended up with WAR and AOC and one hell of a melt down on the forums.
Is there too much hype? In my view (very negative towards hype) i'd say yes. In the eyes of someone who can't wait for the next piece of info to come out? of course they will say no.
Anyway hype does not really matter too much, what matters is if the devs can deliver a product that meets this hype and if the past 2 years are anything to go by expect tears.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds -Solid non level based game -Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

But you see, SW:TOR is more hyped than GW2, you just need to look at the right places ^^
MMORPG have been captured for GW2 but its not like that in every mmo site
I think that they hype growth very fast since gamescom-pax for obvious reasons
"It has potential" -Second most used phrase on existence "It sucks" -Most used phrase on existence
Theoretical there could be to little hype. Yeah i know its sounds crazy.
But if you look at what arenanet is aiming at and put it up against their trackrecord. Then my conclusion is that hype is not crazy, it actual moderate and for sure manageable!
Yep their is insane expectations in some people heads , that always happends, but so far what I see in forums around is that sane fact telling people mostly can keep up and clear misunderstandings from fanboys. Trolls are guided back under their bridges. The forum discussions is mostly way more sober than anything else hyped I have seen on this boards for a while.
And thats up against quotes from former GW2 developers like this
“Having played Guild Wars 2 I can honestly say that the whole fantasy MMO genre is about to have its teeth knocked out. The only teeth that will be left are the ones that it'll be choking on. Then it will die, and all that will be left is GW2.”
Arenanet aims at making the best MMO yet, and are even doing it B2P. From most developers that would be outright laughable. But what gamemakers else have streetcredit to say so!
How can GW 2 have too much hype when G4TV doesn't even care about it? The MMO report on G4 only hints that GW 2 is announced and nothing more. I guess G4TV is owned by Blizzard or something. They are very anti-GW.
There is not enough hype. Halo had way too much hype. GTA IV had way too much hype. Not GW .
Gotta agree with Theo... The game just doesn't have that much hype when it's barely talked about outside of the MMO community. Even within the MMO community you get a lot of mixed views on it with this site having it as it's most anticipated MMO of 2011, whereas a lot of other sites (like Massively or ZAM) have Star Wars: The Old Republic or Rift as their most anticipated.
Quite frankly I think the game is garnering the amount of hype it deserves and I hope future announcements will hype it up some more, as we dawn closer to the inevitable release.
Everyone without pre-formed views of gw2 without knowing about it (a.k.a current game subbers) has instantly gone 'that looks really good' and then straight to 'zomg buying' after realising it's buy to play too. The fact that it's pulling in non-MMO gamers shows that the game is going to be big.
Hell, even my mainly CS:S playing friends are interested in gw2's pvp. That's saying something.
I don't think there is anything wrong with eagerly anticipating a game much like I am with TOR but my feeling is this games rampant fanboism is reaching levels that the devs will have a hard time meeting expectations. Not so different from games like DF,AOC and WAR.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

And what makes you think that TOR isn't at same position as GW2 right now, that is - not so different from AoC and WAR before their release ? I assure you that the developers of a $150 million BioWare Star Wars MMO have much higher expectations to meet than an unknown studio with as equally unknown IP. It's really funny how people dont see a forest for the tree, and rant about GW2 hype yet ignore gargantuan hype machine behind SWToR. It's not Arenanet who call their game ''a world wide phenomenon'' two years before it's released. It's not Arenanet devs who are followed by Jedi escort when they do interviews.

I don't hate much, but I hate Apple© with a passion. If Steve Jobs was alive, I would punch him in the face.

GW2 actually has a fairly large amount of votes compared to some other games coming out.
Rift has about 1100, Tera has about 740, and TOR has about 3300 whereas GW2 has around 1900.

I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them
maybe, maybe not, I cannot be disappointed by it because I know what to expect and what to not expect so I know why I am hyped...
And the fact that until now all they talked was real deal helps a bit...

Yep. It was 'play AOC until WAR is out'.
Now it looks like it will be 'play Rift until GW2 is beta/out'.
After the last few years, we really need one of these two to be a semi-long term hit.
