Pokemon MMO - New Approach

I would like to see a Pokemon MMO after seeing an pretty awesome picture of Trainer Red and reading the manga (Which is a lot darker then you'd expect it to be, can you say Blue's Charmander slicing another Pokemon in two?).

BUT, not just as Pokemon with online function. How about every trainer is quintessentially a pet class, and your skill bar is essentially your item pack and 6 current Pokemon?

I dunno, I'd just like to see Pokemon try something different then turn based combat, and as an MMO I have this vision of a group of trainers, all specialised for certain types of Pokemon sending out their lovingly trained creatures to fight against a boss-level legendary like Zapdos with stupid amounts of health and AOE effects.

This is where I get shot down in flames.

What do you lot think?

Pokemon always struck me as a game that needed to be made into an MMORPG.  But you'd need to make it faithful to the original games, and sending out a group of pokemon to fight a big boss one wouldn't be.  Pokemon was fundamentally about 1 on 1 turn-based combat, and the premise that you could play as any character in the game.

Unfortunately, Nintendo doesn't seem to have any interest in online gaming.

True, the designer himself didn't want to alienate the players from each other in a fantasy world according to an interview when he was asked about taking Pokemon and turning it into an MMO game.

Pokemon does seem a bit stretched with it's ideas though. It's ideas are getting fewer and of less quality with each generation. I would have like to see Pokemon grow up with it's players. I grew up with Pokemon, I want it to grow up with me.

Well I know the legendary pokemon could be like boss fights since from what I remember from the movies and shows, it takes a lot of pokemon to even fight them. Also while pokemon is geared towards children, how the games play, it could turn into a pvp game, even a hardcore pvp game. Also would it be turn based? If it were turn based it would probably be the best turn based game out there. They could already have a lot of content because they can use previous games as a base.

A Pokemon MMO would have to be great from the start or else it would be a failure. I don't think Nintendo wants to take that kind of risk.

I would imagine them to be more real time then turn based. There's already a turned based MMO of Pokemon out there that emulates the single player game just as well.

Though, you could add a turn based element to it there for traditionalist in a PvP element. I think Pokemon should have the aspect of trainer working with Pokemon together, which has been lost a little over your nameless and mute trainer. Lore and content would be easy enough to produce due to the games being a great base for all the lore as well as the darker manga and anime series.

If you've never read the mangas, do so. They are a lot darker.

I always thought Pokemon would make an awesome MMO. Right about now would be the perfect time to do it too. It would break the monotony of the current quest and raid model everyone is growing tired of.

Turn based combat will never work out well in a MMO.

Says who? Maybe you dont like these games, but they're out there.

    Atlantica online, wizard 101, dofus

I'd say these games work very well, especially dofus.

Then again.. Pokemon would probably be limited to 4 skills per pokemon.

Pokemon might work.. It might not :/ who knows.

Pretty cool topic, was thinking bout a Pokemon MMO just yesterday.

I do feel that it should be left turn based with a limit on the number skills a pokemon can know at a time.

Make games you want to play.

This is what Phoenix Wright has to say about that last testimony.

I always thought Pokemon would make an awsome MMORPG.. I know there are some other f2p Pokemon MMO's out there that play out like a port from green/gold but other players are wandering online with you and you can challange them to a duel and stuff.. Also some shiney pokemons were added that spanwed like 1/10000.. But besides that it wasnt much of a MMORPG more like a port with a online duel function..

I'd be the first to buy a Pokemon MMORPG.. But tbh i'd like to see a next gen Pokemon game launch on like the WII or something.. It sucks that the WII's only gotten knock off pokemon games and not a full adventure one like Diamond/Pearl/ect.. Honestly i think with the WII you'd have a chance to make a Pokemon game with a truley engrossing narrative/story and a lot of people would eat it up.. Oh well, i guess i can only dream.

It just dosn't make sense to me.. Honestly a Pokemon game for the WII would be a HUGE success and Nintendo HAS to see that.. I can only imagine that they are just holding off until the right time to release a pokemon game on a non-handheld system.. But with 3DS comeing out soon i doubt they are done milking handhelds.

Lol TBH I'd simply play pokemon Gold/Silver/RUBY/Saphire etc online if there was an official multiplayer...the ruby/saph had some unsuspected depth, considering all the skills, the pokebodies, their nature, pokemon types and their weaknesses (since every pokemon could have two or three types) their spec attack, normal attack, s.def, def the list goes on...

It they made it MMO the PvP depth would definately be there ...only add at least two more skills for use in fights and it'd be awesome;)

I actually think it wouldnt be very hard to create the game based on this franchise, it already has enough mechanics, lore etc..

I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them

I want to play a Pokémon MMO so bad! >_<

Also for "Bosstype" kind of Pokémon you should be able to group up with other Trainers to take them down. Since one Pokémon wont be enough. x)

(And yes, the Pokémon Manga are truly awesome <3 Love the Story around Ruby&Sapphire)

I liked the pokemons on gba, like firered or leafgreen, emerald... I would love to see it as an mmo. There was a few attempts but all canceled or fails.

    TL;DR

Maybe when the time is right there will be a Pokemon MMO. Then again the world at this current time with the amount of Pokemon already out there is incredible.

I havnt been really following Pokemon for the last few years but still love it to bits - what, they upto 6 main regions for the game now? What mind you are massive - in the series anyway - gameboy wise of course they sized it down but still big as.

I can imagine how big the regions would be if it was a full fledge 3D MMO. Then you got those "other" regions such as the Orange Islands etc that are offset from the main regions - then the endlass caves and dungions and other maps to explore.

There has been many debates about Pokemon being an MMO - will it be good, or bad.

If dont right, it will be one of the biggest games in terms of population and fans. If done wrong, then all hell will break loose and thats what i think the reason why they havnt done an "official" Pokemon MMO yet is that they don't want to risk it.

Nintendo continues to make great single player games for the gameboy and they sell millions of copies, and they know they will sell that many, and continue to do so over the years to come - in a MMO, the market and so forth are abit different when it comes down to it.

Also note that Pokemon being a Nintendo product - we more than likely wont see a "official" game on the PC but moreso on a console based system. This bring me to my next issue - as Nintendo are at the moment focusing moreso on interaction and casual audiance i dont think we will see a Pokemon MMO due to that - and that the WII itself would not be capable of having an MMO as big as Pokemon. Also note - if Nintendo do make a MMO - why release anymore single player games?

But we are slowly seeing steps that Nintendo are taking towards the more "3D" market - i am hoping that the next console they release will be more powerful in terms of the internal chipsets and so on while it will still continue to be casual based system but due to increasing the power of the console we could possibly see more "hardcore" and much bigger games such as MMOs on the Nintendo console - just as we have seen with the 360 and PS3 with MMOs like DC Universe, Final Fantasy etc.

    -----------------

Heres a small list on what would be great for an MMO.

Trainer Customization (looks): In a dream it would be great to see a full customization of the character from head to toe in a sense so you could really make yourself stand out. With ingame clothing there aswell (fluff cash shop anyone?) that would make lots of money by itself.

Trainer Skills: In terms of skills, it comes down to how complex it would be - more than likely it would moreso be a themepark with abit of sandbox i think attached to it aswell due to the exploration and so on. Some skills would involve making potions etc for pokemon rather than buying in store, farming for berries etc, fishing, pokeball - making pokeballs, assuming there would be instanced homes - you could have skill to make furniture etc, tools - make fishing rods, belts, pokedex addons (such as map, radio etc).

Exploration: The game itself, being massive as is - could really be great to explore and see what the world has to discover from ruins, secret spots, pokemon areas, parks, big cities, underground caverns and so on.

Social: The game, revolving around battling, catching pokemon and exploring would bring together many people to socilize and create friendships and rivals at the same time. Gather in big cities to talk, battle and trade.

Pokemon: Have the option to go out and catch your favorite pokemon and create a full team to take on the best! Have a full set of different types or specialize in one set as you might want to be a bug catcher and have all bug pokemon, or fisher with water pokemon etc.

    Thats just a few there.

What i think the game MIGHT lack could be the direction for your trainer and or "end goal/end game". As for most MMOs for end game we have raids, instances, getting rare loot, pvp and so forth. In pokemon, what would the "end game" be. Questing also, what would it involves - to keep the player going forward.

Now there would be some quests you could partake in, the main getting all badges, defeating the best etc then just collecting your pokemon and then pvping. Saying that, that might be all it requires.

Pokemon wouldnt be for everyone, even fans of the single player games might not even enjoy the concept of it. But there is a market of it.
