New Player Questions

VegettoVegetto Member Posts: 841

Hi all,

I have been keeping an eye on this game for a bit and although i usually like to join games at release, i feel the time i have given to start this one is perfect; due to recent changes.

I have been looking for a new long-term, sandbox style MMO recently. Having split up with my girlfriend, who moved out with my 1yo daughter, i now have ridiculous amounts of free time outside work - Which have meant crazy drinking binges every weekend. So i've decided an MMO addiction will actually be GOOD for me - If i can find the right game. So in this sense, i have the ability to become a hardcore player, when not seeing my daughter that is. It will save me £100's a month and even improve my health if it stops my party lifestyle.

So, i am looking for a time investment, just like any hobby, where it is not just instant action - jump-in and out- but where my time is spent developing my character ingame. Just how EvE encourages you to pump endless hours into it or how Star Wars Galaxies gave you so many aspects to investigate and areas to explore. I hear this is very similar to SWG; something that definately aroused my interest.

I've babbled a bit here, but the background helps explain what im looking for: A living world with long-term goals, a strong social network and a large open world to explore and feel part of...

Is this suitable? Many people in SWG spent years just hanging around with guildmates fighting without much content, purely due to the social interaction, so i am not asking for mega content, more of a living world if you get me.

Thanks.

Well social interaction is omnipresent in Fallen Earth, this is  a game with "potential" in a sense that you kinda have to look over the tutorial and basic mechanics. Let's just say that if you can experience the game for what it is, it will grow on you.

The game is devoid of theme parks, so later on if you don't socialized it will not keep you hooked.

Not sure if you are still on the fence about this one or are playing but, one way that Fallen Earth really tends toward a long slow journey is how many out-of-the way places you can find that have missions, nice loot, or interesting mobs. There are many types of creatures you wont even see if you just follow the quest lines.

I just spent the last couple of days playing this game.  I like certain features, including the graphics and premise.  The quests though feel a tad lifeless, and are fairly easy.  There is an in game help chat, but mostly it is used by vets as a social chat channel.  That  gets irritating after about the fourth attempt of asking a good question only to receive immature comments by players simply socializing.  The help chat should be used to help new players learn the game, not cause them to get frustrated. (I will say though, when the help does come, it's really good.)

I was hoping for a more streamlined experience, allowing me to enjoy the game while taking small breaks to research different elements and strategies online.  However, streamlined this game is not.  It's not horrible by any means, but if you're used to games that make a bit more sense, or clearly identify certain elements to the game (like showing empty spots in a spell book for example) you're going to minimize your fun while learning.  So far, I'm not finding good info for this game online, and most of it is from a couple of years ago.  I was mocked slightly in the help channel for not reading my tips to the left of the screen as they popped up.  Of course i read them, but they were not relevant to my specific questions.  There are many basic questions I still have in this game, such as obtaining a medicine kit to craft.  (i've only been given a basic one, and can't make the regular one until i raise my medicine tradeskill level which can't be raised without first obtaining a regular medicine kit to craft and raise the level . . . . see what i mean?)  I like the game, and would continue if it were free to play or a cheaper sub.  But at the moment, i'm slightly regretting my purchase of this game.  (I'm extremely easy to please and open-minded so time will be a better judge.)  When subscriptions are concerned, the information to maximize the fun potential should be in place, and readily available.  If i had more free time i could appreciate having to dig, but I don't.   And the help chat channel should not be used as the global chat!

The help channel can be bad, since there is no global. You sometimes get better help from Region since some people have just switched off help.

Generally, it is more confusing than a lot of games and the devs/GMs seem to actually want it that way, I've seen GMs in chat that will give some helpful advice but not a full answer and comment that we want to put you in the right direction but we don't want to hand hold.

I'm not sure what the particular issue is with the medical kit, the basic one should let you craft stuff until level 20+.
