So in Eve, a personal mission spawns stuff at a point in space that exists for everyone...so at any time someone could just be trucking along and they would run through the stuff that spawned there. You warp in, do the mission and the stuff dissappears or becomes valueless to other players. It works like an instance, but technically isn't an instance because it's not a duplication of game space.
By your definition every mob is an instance. object oriented programmingly speaking (is that even english ? ^^), this is absolutely right, Loktofeit ;-) Very true.
Ah, I wasn't defining an "instance", I was trying to get a handle on what the discussion was seemingly about. If I understand correctly, there are no instances in either Eve or Perpetuum, even though there's something in Eve that behaves like an instance (personal missions) in most cases.
This is ignoring that there is actually an instance in both games - the game world itself is an instance, but it's the only one.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
Can you describe exactly what and how you control your toon in in Perpetuum? Is it like FPS or auto-attack, and are there cooldowns, for example? Thanks.
It is auto attack, you activate your modules and they cycle. You will have 4 weapons in the first couple hours, and a couple other modules that will also be cycled like sensor amplifiers to increase locking range, and armor repairers.
You dont have to FPS aim, you select your targets from a list (or click them on the UI) and lock them. Once locked you can fire your weapons on them.
There is a new video made showing you the basics of combat in Perpetuum, and its kinda funny to boot. If you're interested in seeing a little bit of the basic PvE action, this is pretty good. Granted, it gets WAY more interesting, and this is basically just weapons vs very easy targets.
Put the helium container down and step away... ^^ Perpetuum has been rather entertaing to me to this point. Its PvE(unless flagged) on the Alpha islands, and FFA PvP on the Beta islands. It has many of the aspects of EVE, but takes place on the ground, with all of thats virtues and vices. Its a player driven market(with all of the implications there as well). Not to mention that the Dev's and GM's take an active role in the game at this point.
The combat system takes into account terrrain features(LOS), distance and type of weapons(and other mods). The graphics while not quite as good as we've come to expect from EVE, are still first rate. I'm amazed that it works and looks as good as it does, this soon after launch. Over all for less than $10 for a month, anyone who might be interested should give it a try.
I think of the EVE missions as instances, but not invulnerable instances. It's effectively a dungeon that spawned just for the mission, there may be dozens of the same dungeon, spawned in the middle of nowhere, that nobody can go to but you, but anyone can follow you into, and anybody can follow them. So, open instances or vulnerable instances. It IS instanced adventuring, just not the normal way of doing them, at least in my opinion.
I remember when Lost Dungeons of Norrath was introducing them, and this altered definition doesn't seem that far away from the original thing.
He didnt say how long you'd play Perpetuum, but just as a guide if you couldnt play EvE for that long but you still liked the style of the game.
This thread is meant for those who still liked what EvE was about, but just couldnt stay entertained because of the setting, the control scheme, or whatever and Perpetuum may be able to offer them what they were missing.
I tried to play EvE a couple of times, even got into a corp in 0.0 space, but I never really got into it. EvE is lacking emotional content, there are no life forms in it.
Perpetuum is very similar in game play, but takes place on land, with canyons, plants, hills, buildings, etc. That provides a biological reference that is emotionally reassuring and interesting.

This is perfectly said, and fits me to a T. I liked Eve, would recommend it to anyone, but subbed four different times and just couldn’t stick with it. Perpetuum for whatever reason is working for me where Eve didn’t.

I can see why Perpetuum feels easier to relate to, taking place on ground with plants, buildings, mountains and so. In a way charming, but it feel quite limiting too, it's like lacking a dimension compared to EVE.
So far I've just seen shameless EVE copying in less polished format. The more responsive and active combat seems interesting, but I'm not sure if it is enough. I quite like EVE's passive and relaxed gameplay, it kind of feels like Perpetuum forcedly adds unnecessary twitchyness just for the sake of adding it. It's still choose target from list -> activate modules.
User interface is a lot less pleasing than in EVE, but EVE has the best so that's a bit unfair comparison.
Well, these are just my impressions so far. To "If not EVE, then why Perpetuum" I would answer, that Perpetuum might be quite interesting to those who found EVE combat game changing problem and to those who felt they are too far behind everyone else, if the they join EVE now. Otherwise I don't see reason yet, but my knowledge of this game is still very limited.

EVE has also been around a few years, I'll be paying attention to perpetuum to see how it continues to develop.

Perpetuum is Eve + Fun
All the good bit of Eve Plus more control and interaction with your avatar.
If you could only play Eve for 6 months at a time before becoming bored, try this game and you will find it just more fun!
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
thats a pretty big claim seeing as no paying customers have played perpetuum longer than 3 weeks
