"All of this... equals a recipe for fun that exposes a lot of other genre offerings as the bland variations on whack-a-mole-with-a-chat-box that they are."

I read it earlier this morning. I think it's a pretty good write-up of his first 30 hours in-game. It will be interesting to see how his opinions and perspective change (if at all) by the end of his run.

It will also be interesting to see how many DF-haters and naysayers he'll attract if he still likes it by the end of his run.

    Current: None
Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN

Yeah, I read it about an hour ago. That was a great write up. It makes me want to play it. I'm not going to, but it makes me want to.

It would probably help if you quoted it properly. The way you have it sounds negative.

    The proper quote

    Thank you, and edited.

It was an interesting, well written article. My only complaint is that I would rather have seen Jef play as an anonymous character, rather than announcing his name and race at the start in a way which insured he would get the red carpet treatment.

That's what I was thinking as well.  However, I have heard many examples of kindness to noobs from the community.

yes, yes, all these things he mentions are things we all had thought of at the beginning of our play time.

The problem is balancing the amount of time you are 'forced' to engage in uninteresting tasks just to skill-up. Perhaps, i'd dare say, a level-based approach would have been more interesting for DF. Because even though Aventurine may advertise "no- level-based game" for DF, it is very very heavily dependent on character statistics and skills (i.e. a form of level).

Still, even in this form of skill-based-vs-level-based game mechaniscs, DF would be more fun if not all content gave the same amount of skill-up; I believe people would feel the risk vs reward more if harder mobs leveled you faster than weaker mobs.

"Uninsteresting" is the in eye of the beholder.

I enjoy PvE in DFO.  I can go farm any mob I like depending on which skill I need or, enchanting mat, or gold.

This can be contrasted with raid based games (WoW, EQ, etc) where you farm the same instance until your eyes bleed so you can get your magic purplex.

Or you can contrast this with DAoC/WaR where you farm the same instance over, and over, and over to farm "rep".  Again until your eyes bleed.  this means you repeatedly farm weaker players and are actually penalized for seeking out  fights against even, or greater odds.

But I guess you can also follow the EvE model where you keep an active sub for 6 months and don't even log-in while you "skill-up".  Certainly you can log-in and run "mission" but I am sure those missions would be "uninsteresting" to you as well.

    This.

Apparently his visit was mentioned on DF forums several times and the community was invested in showing him a good time -> which means good coverage of the game,

Santa Claus says such cruel things.
