I bought EQ a couple of years ago from the Sony website through digital download, due to a harddrive crash I lost it, is there any way to dowload the game client again without having to pay for it again?
Actually theres a way to patch the game without needing an active subscription. Just go through their customer support site and type in everquest.exe client or whatever it'll show up as one of the FAQ's list. I never activated my sub until I get the game fully patch when I come back to play.
I thought that everquest.exe file only installed the basic game + launcher, which after you subscribe you still have to run the launcher and patch the game (download the game)?
And the launcher won't let you login without an active subscription so it wouldn't begin to patch until you're logged in. At least that's what I saw when I tried.

You can always patch the game through the launcher if you have an active subscription. You can't do it if you don't have an active subscription.
