One man made a better game than modern day MMO companies make

Now before you go saying "you just hate MMOs"...no...I LOVED oldschool UO, I LOVED SWG (before SOE ruined it)...and I loved Auto Assault (my favorite MMO ever, well UO/SWG/AA are all very close in the top 3), but NCsoft ruined AA. I also really liked Tabula Rasa, but NCsoft again ruined that...and lets see...those were my top favorite MMOs.

But one man made a better MMO than modern day MMO companies make (as title says). He has sold many copies of his game, and its not even out of alpha yet. Its doing better than most modern MMOs do. Now at this point you must know the game. A whole MMO company can't do what this one man did.

What did he do?

He made a FUN game...he showed it isn't all about the graphics, but gameplay and having FUN. I can explore a HUGE (understatement) world. I can build a whole world...I've built floating islands, terraformed the landscape...so many things. Its just pure fun. Even the crafting imo is nicely done. The most awesome modern sandbox game yet.

Most fun game I've played in years, and puts modern day MMOs to shame.

One of my experiences while playing...I was mining and hearing "rhghghgh" from somewhere behind one of the walls. I ended up opening up a space to a HUGE cavern. Found lava, two waterfalls...and tons of zombies. I actually was scared, but more than that, I actually felt like I was exploring a WORLD. Finding this huge cavern was awesome. And I died many times in this cavern. It was just pure fun.

The game I'm talking about? That game is Minecraft. Which I'm sure most of you guessed by now.

MMO companies need to learn to stop being greedy and stop copying WoW (which every game thats copied WoW so far has failed, because why I play a clone, when WoW already has more content than the clone and a lot less bugs (for the most part)), look at Minecraft's success and copy it instead.

That is...copy the FUN, not time consuming, sandbox game. With open game play, and a great world to explore.

And as a side note...I know of EVE, Darkfall and Mortal Online. EVE being my favorite of the modern MMOs. Some say its PvP focused, but really, to me it was just as PvP focused as oldschool UO...I could still do plenty of PvE (like finding wormholes is awesome). But sadly in EVE's case...I need land beneath my feet (and walking in stations, while cool, just isn't the same as being on a planet, but I'll see how the walking in stations turns out), be that in a sci-fi world like SWG or Ryzom, or a fantasy world (not many fantasy sandbox games though). Still, I give kudos to EVE for being the only good (in my opinion) modern MMO. And as for Darkfall, I imagine its fun for those who like hardcore PvP, but that target group isn't aimed at me.

Well, back to Minecraft...a game created by one person...better than most modern MMOs.

Thanks for the write up, I'd seen Minecraft mentioned before and had shrugged it off, but this post got me interested enough to look it  up and consider giving it a go.

Well Minecraft just made it to 500,000 units sold. 500k * 10 euros per copy = 5 million euros before tax and what insignificant expenditure comes into the picture.

Some money grubbing company will notice this sucess and copy it with significant backing, if they have half a brain cell between them that is...

I don't think so, Minecraft is a sandbox and even though people want sandboxes it's hard to put into a spreadsheet or somehow record the money value of a sandbox game. I mean wow can say they have just added x many quests and that will flow right with the amount of content and tie directly to how much money they can expect and w/e

Sandbox on the other hand, content is highly based on imagenation. which is alot harder to show people that it can make money. I mean look at non video game products that base themselevs on imagenation. legos? not much elses.

Im hoping a bigger company will adapt similar prinicples towards minecraft - or even if they make it a small group based game and not a mmo would work no problem. But a big funded game.

But then we get greed and it will turn to filth lol

I'm going to have to agree a bit. Minecraft is, in spirit, much like Ultima Online and the original Star Wars Galaxies. UO has kept, and SWG could have kept, their core audiences for years upon years, but I'm afraid SOE squandered SWG's chance. Sadly, the sandbox worlds have been all but forgotten in place of the linear, more appealing WoW system. I'm not insulting it. It's a nice introduction to MMOs, just wish it wasn't the trend-setter and end-all.

Either way, I'm an Alpha owner on Minecraft. It's solid stuff. Fun, amazing. It gives that unguided feeling of adventure I haven't had in years, the stories that I can tell for years to come of the craziness that can ensue from an open world like this one. Would I say it's the best modern "MMO." No. It has some development to go through. Could it be? Yes, but it's too early to call it. It's definitely one of the most fun experiences.

    - Tryken.

P.S. You know. Ultima Online isn't dead. It's still an amazing game with new expansions. They just made boat sailing like walking or running, which is amazing. I wish people wouldn't talk about it like SOE murdered it, even with the Trammel update (there's still Siege).

Are you sure the 500 000 doesn't include trials?

Your not seriously telling me this game sold more copies than FFXIV LOL

Nope, doesnt include trial..I dont even think the game has a trial.

And if it had sold more copies than FFXIV its done it with graphics from 20 years ago. Just showing that pretty graphics dont make a good game.

Ohhh and btw if you bought the alpha version, and maybe it still applies, you never have to buy another version of mine craft again.

Like someone else said, if you look at the top of the Minecraft website it says over 500,000 purchases.

Also, there are no trials for the game, so yes, it did sell more copies than FFXIV. It's not that hard to do when a game is as great a game as Minecraft is. Especially when the game spreads like wildfire. Within 2 weeks after I started playing it, 3 of my friends also started playing it.

I LOVE when small indi companies or in this matter single person taking on the big guns and succeeding!

It shows that you don't need the man-power, money and backup from investors to do good things.

I am sure within the next year minecraft will become bigger and bigger. I just cant wait what else it will bring up!

Question: would it be greed if the guy thats making this decides to continually very slowly work on it on his own while he makes a lot of money instead of hiring more developers to making it better and more finished sooner than later(years?)?

  • EnerzealEnerzeal Member Posts: 326

Hes aquired an office and has a growing team for his development company, hes like the second coming of games developers! With any luck he will pump out an MMO with the same design ideas that minecraft uses, we can all call him Richard "Notch" Garriott...

No wait scratch that Richard Garriott is a moron now with little knowledge of the gaming world.. social networking game... what a dumb ass..

  • xenoclixxenoclix Member UncommonPosts: 298

Haha true, think i read his blog regarding the move into new place and bigger team. He wants to expand of course so i think we will see good things.

Im sure he wants to perfect Minecraft first and or improve it to something bigger as his main project rather than starting another game with same ideas. We dont know :).

All i can say is we have a new generation of developers coming through the ranks with bright new ideas and they have seen larger bigger companies fail or do bad due to bad game design or not listening to people etc.

The new generation of developers will see and improve and be better than the current big guns because when they were younger and playing the mmos that the big guns were making they wernt good so they go out and build better and what people want.

    The future looks good.

Minecraft is one of my favorite games now. Heard about it at school and then bought it. I'm working on my sky city right now. The halloween patch is looking great. Can't wait to go exploring with the hell feature being added.

This is not a subscription based game. So hes not continually making money.

And is $14 US (9.95 euro) really that much money?

I applaud the success of Minecraft, especially since it was only 1 man who brought something new to the table while major companies build clones with dollar signs in their eyes riding Blizzards coat tails..

But I just dont get Minecraft..

do u just exist to build whatever you want out of the world?

I understand when night falls undead spawn to try and kill you...you either fight em off or hide until daylight..

then just go back to building whatever again?

is it just a virtual world of building blocks?

How is it a scam when he advertises its in alpha. Hes not misleading anyone into thinking its a finished product.
