Why not have MMO's on consoles? I mean I enjoy them a lot on the computer, but wouldn't it be more lucretive to the MMO industry if they brought MMO's to consoles as well. I have to say that the original gameplay concept of point-and-click and auto-target can get rather tiring when every MMO you come across plays the same. No hate on MMO's on PC because I love my computer very much, but I would find many more MMO's besides DC Universe, FFXI, FFXIV, ect. on the next-gen consoles very interesting.

Imagine playing a game like WoW or EVE on a remote control. Doesn't sound too fun right?
When consoles developers toss out the traditional remote in favor of a keyboard and mouse then I could see MMOs (as well as RTSs) making their way to consoles but not sooner. You might see some devs make an online game that supports alot of people, but it's not going to be as good as what PC mmos offer.

Heres your next gen console and prob next gen failure as well
Has fail written all over it.
While i totally get the point you are trying to make and the example you use makes perfect sense, i would like to point out that less than a decade ago, the notion of having a First-Person Shooter on a console was absolutely laughable.
Franchises like Halo and Call of Duty changed all of that. Now most of the demos and DLC for these games hit the consoles first and franchises like Halo don't even bother with coming to the PC until a year later.
Yes the control scheme of a generic PC MMO would not work on the console and quite frankly it shouldn't because it was designed from the ground up to work with a keyboard and a mouse. But i don't see why an MMO which is based on platforming (God of War) or turn based combat (old school Final Fantasy games) wouldn't work on the consoles.
The interface is not the problem anymore..
Also, its been done before with Phantasy Star Online and Phantasy Star Universe. Both ended in Utter Failure localized in the U.S and at the end of things, they decided the game got too big, too slow and filled with bugs....that they made PC versions with the same problems.
Controllers actually are easier for MMORPGs that are more action oriented. The idea of moving around and striking everything with a command and then using other buttons or button combinations to do things other than spamming attacks works quite well on controllers. I personally like MMORPGs on Computers, but there is tremendous potential on game controllers...
I would love an Action Oriented MMO that isn't an RPG to exist on consoles..Imagine an Armored Core MMO....There would be mecha battles all over the place and a game like that would shine. Unfortunately the Video Game industry reminds me of Einsteins Quote about Men and Women...
"Men marry women hoping they would not change, Women marry men hoping they will change...and then two are forever disappointed."
Right now Consoles are too busy thinking how to challenge the PC world and the PC world is too busy consolizing their games....that both sides rarely make anything unique...and when they do...the replay value is abysmal at best.
Panasonic does look like a failure lol, but yeah I see what you all mean. Though a more action oriented MMO would definitely work if designed correctly. Like Guild Wars 2 for the PC and PS3, it's actually getting somewhere since they re-design the game mechanic to where it would play like a console game.
I think that it is doable and could be quite fun, but like others have mentioned there are some issues with the game controllers not having enough buttons and a lack of a keyboard =P. So I think that if an MMO does come out on the console, it will be a little watered down and will have to be a themepark sorta game for sure. Think something like fable or Oblivion, just adapted to handle alot of people on different servers or something.Communication in groups would be handled through mics and text could be done through something like the 360s little keyboard/thing. It could work but it will never be as good as its computer counterpart, and I know I would never touch it if it is not F2P.
There is one big advantage to making an MMO on a console though. You have an even playing field technically; everyone has the same console and developers wont have to worry about making the game playable on low end comps.
Talking bout the issues..and keepin it funky.
How about this for MMO controls?
I am going to take a playstation controller and I am going to try to do some mappings. I do not have an Xbox360 so someone can reply with their own controller. Please realize I am a die-hard fan to input devices and making them work. ^_^
Framework: Create an MMORPG where characters have their own quick-inventories and through a menu create the quick inventories.
Combat Set = A set that has equipment for left hand, right hand + armor arranged in a character menu, but quickslotted for speed in a quick inventory as one icon (with a bubble that has the name of weapons + armors) for players to read.
Item Set - A list of four items set as quickslots
Skill Set, A list of 8 skills set in 2 groups of four:)
Below are controls
Left Thumb Stick: Movement (this has always been the prefered way to move)
Right Thumb Stick: Use this to cycle targets. (Good and Evil)
Controller Arrows: Used mostly in menus, but also on the field as secondary controls for mounts and special things that happen to characters. (I can think of menu I wish MMORPGs have)...Can even work as Mode-Toggle.
R1 + L1: Hold to hide and reveal map/compass along with health bars and other information.
R1 - Hold to change the four buttons (while held down) to skill set 2
R2 - Combat Set, this changes the four buttons (triangle, circle, square and X) to a combat set so you can change weapons and armor on the fly.
R3 - Lock or Unlock Targets. Can Lock Friendly/Unfriendly Targets. If target is enemy, it will follow with intention to attack.
L1 - Hold to change the four buttons (while held down) to skill set 1
L2 - tap to CenterVIew, HOLD to change Camera Viewing Mode.
L3 - Hold down to change the Four buttons to ITEM SET...this allows four items to exist that can quickly be selected by simply holding down L3 + pressing either Square, Triangle, Circle or X-Button to choose the slotted item.
Triangle - Interract (Search, Talk to NPC, Pick things from ground, etc)
Circle - Cancel
Square - Accept/Attack (Hold down to Charge for a heavier attack or use a weapon special attack)
X-Button - Jump/Swim
Select - Chat Log Toggle
Start - Main Character Menu (Think of a final fantasy-like interface menu where you have master lists of items, etc....in short. think of traditional console interfaces for handling items and lists).
Communication: Plug in a keyboard to a console...press F1 for Regional Chat, F2 for Party Chat, F3 for Guild Chat, F4 for Trade Chat, F5 for Global Chat, F6 for Whispter, F7 for Voice Chat (requires Mic), Press Tilde + F1 - F7 to Disable (filter out those chats or reenable them on the log).
I took a playstation 2 controller and tried to do a mapping. There are a total of 24 one button inputs. Also, Console Gamers are used to simultaneous button mappings and List- Mapping, so its very easy to take one controller....keep gameplay fluid and fast and map 24 buttons to do many things. The keyboard of course would be for typing things to players....as Virtual In-Game keyboards truly suck.....
The thing about this setup...I came up with it in around 10 minutes....It would make an MMORPG that isn't super dependent on targetting, but will have it available for when many enemies fill a screen up. In this way, the quickslots are faster, able to switch (and use) an item, attack and fire skills back to back....easier organization to view skill patterns in groups instead of entire bars with us memorizing "we press 1 - 4 for our first chain and 5 - 8 for our next chain" One can take it further by setting a chain in a menu and having each skill in the chain when the previous one is used for combos...if I wanted that kind of thing.
Remember, between 24 buttons configured as monomappings (one button, one action), dimappings (two buttons pressed together for one action) and dual mappings (one button mapped to execute 2 commands)...Console gamers are really used to having more control sets memorized than PC gamers around fewer buttons, while PC gamers have much more training in monomapping and dualbindings. ^_^
P.S: 24 mappings (monomapping): L-buttons x 3, Four positions for R-Stick, 4 Positions for L-Stick, Four Buttons (X, triangle, Circle and Square), R-buttons x 3, 4 Arrow buttons, Select, Start...(Not counting Analog trigger button)
How will engineers redo the Mouse controls for console and handheld control?
Haha Shinami sounds like a great idea although I've already construct my control interface a little different, I would have to say that I would work on an MMO game as well. I do plan on making my own future games and is currently using Blender for 3D character models. It sounded like you were going to make your own MMO there for the PS3 because I too have a PS3! Well right now it would be easier for me to work on an Action Adventure game since I am learning how to design my own games. I also do agree with everyone at some degree and then again I don't, but that is due to a fair amount of thinking of how I can put an interesting gameplay to a controller.
PS: The PS3 has a small keyboard that you can connect to the controller, but it is a seperate piece so you will have to buy.
Free Realms is coming to PS3. :P
But yeah it would be awesome to have a big budget MMO on a console. Maybe Blizzard's next MMO will be on console - they have not ruled it out.
You know what, that is a great possibility vilkon.
And they'll be dumbed down versions too. Just like console FPS.
Until console developers leave the classic remote behind and use a new control format (keyboard and mouse) as the norm, console versions of these games will be less than what they could be. Not to mention throwing out the unneccessary fees they charge people to use " Xbox Live " service. The only service I have to pay when I play COD online is my electric bill and my cable internet bill, none of this middle crap.
M$ and Sony aren't leaving alot of elbow room for their customers, especially modders. So until they change, MMOs and FPSs will always be second rate to their PC versions. Always.
i just cant see them putting a MMO like WOW on a console with all the buttons needed on a keyboard

Yet again we have the why dont we transport MMOS to shitty consoles so they can be dumbed down even more thread.
Im really really starting to belive that old saying that
those that are ignorant of history are doomed to repeat it , over, and over , and over again.
This has already been done on the PS2 by the most successful company at the time and it wasnt a very successful port. you can check it out here

I also have tried the keyboard / mouse mappers out for ps3 and xbox namely a personal modified version of this 1
XIM
While it acomplishes what i want it to which is to make the console kiddies whimper when i woop them and there childish auto assisted aiming for the controlers in the shooters. It is still is no where NEAR as responsive and accurate as my KB/M on my PC. Eventually people will just have to concede to the fact that a KB/M are far superior to a controler for games. NOW will the controller ever go away? no i doubt it, but i do think that console makers will try to add the KB/M functionality of PCs eventually to try drag people from pcs.
regarding mmo's on console....
my ps3 lets me plug in a regular usb mouse and keyboard. so all that's needed is a game company to support it.....but....
have you guys seen what CCP is doing?
Take a look at the true next gen.... Dust 514
Dust 514 is a first person shooter (console game)set in the EVE (pc mmo) world. Where the mmo gamers and the dust players form a coexistence.....
I don't know of any other company trying this yet.

welcome to the next level.
WoW is great in all, but I couldn't really get into like that. I'm more of an Action oriented type person. I'm speaking on the behalf of Action MMO's.
Locking due to necro.
