I do not hop in place much, although I do it every once in awhile. I tend to do it when I am waiting for someone.
I do jump while running. It is a good way to get over things on the ground that people would walk around or climb in real life. In MMOs I tend to jump on or over them.
“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”
So... do people in real life not jump around? Is hopping somehow insincere? I hop around in real life. Names like Xsepherothlol are bad RP, but hopping isn't all that important.
Important facts: 1. Free to Play games are poorly made. 2. Casuals are not all idiots, but idiots call themselves casuals. 3. Great solo and group content are not mutually exclusive, but they suffer when one is shoved into the mold of the other. The same is true of PvP and PvE. 4. Community is more important than you think.
So... do people in real life not jump around? Is hopping somehow insincere? I hop around in real life. Names like Xsepherothlol are bad RP, but hopping isn't all that important.
It is not about jumping though. This is not a FF thread.
A person standing by a mail box and hopping out of boredom will affect certain players for various reasons. A player hopping in PvP affects other players for other reasons.
Character names are not always displayed. If somebody talks with a name you do not like, you can ignore them and never see the name again. If somebody is hopping around like an idiot in town, you cannot ignore them and have them disappear from your screen. It is another apples and oranges situation.
As for the players in PvP, it is not as much hopping as it is about the lack of collision... face it, most MMORPGs are sporting target locks - so hopping up and down does not matter. Hopping through somebody though... different story.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?
Well Virus, you seem to be fixated on the apples to oranges comparison to get your somewhat weak argument across.
In the end, both jogging and jumping are part of a characters movement. Both are movement mechanics within the game. Putting jogging and jumping into this context allows me to compare "apples to apples". Since we are actually talking about character movement in an MMORPG, I fail to see why it is so hard for you to understand that.
Jumping whenever you want to is no more ridiculous than jogging everywhere you go. It's an apples to apples comparison based on 2 items that fall under the "movement" category.
Perhaps you are using a different set of criteria. Like maybe you are being literal. You see someone jump and you think, "Eureka! That person is jumping! That is so obviously NOT running!" In the end, you have to accept that comparison actually CAN be made between running and jumping depending on the criteria. You seem to fail to understand this.
You are attempting to shut down another person's argument by saying that the two items are apples and oranges. But you fail to see how weak standing on this little platform is. Using the criteria I described, it should be more than obvious to you that these two items are indeed apples to apples. However, I have a feeling that you will be unable to see this based on what you've argued up to this point. You will continue to argue the literal side of apples and oranges because you view it as a superior way to argue the points. You won't let go, even if you are wrong.
Besides all that, the freedom to bunny hop and the freedom to jog everywhere are, to me, a positive aspect of a game. Both are equally unrealistic since people in real life would get tired. But both are convenient and offer a certain level of freedom that I feel is important. If certain users chose to bunny hop, so be it. They have every right to and I see nothing wrong with them or the mechanic. I think it looks just as silly as people jogging everywhere they go. Or people strafing everywhere they go.
Well Virus, you seem to be fixated on the apples to oranges comparison to get your somewhat weak argument across.
It is not a case of being fixated. It is a case of being able to see the obvious.
In the end, both jogging and jumping are part of a characters movement. Both are movement mechanics within the game. Putting jogging and jumping into this context allows me to compare "apples to apples". Nobody is arguing against jumping though. So any argument you are having along those lines, you are having with yourself.
Jumping whenever you want to is no more ridiculous than jogging everywhere you go. It's an apples to apples comparison based on 2 items that fall under the "movement" category.
Constant jogging and constant jumping are not the same though. You can jog longer than you can jump. There is less physical exertion involved. They are different categories of movement. Your argument against how unrealistic constant running proves that running and bunny hopping is apples and oranges.
Fixing the constant running so that players can only run a certain amount... would still allow a player to run, however it would eliminate bunny hopping. Bunny hopping is not jumping. The fix for the running would still allow a player to jump. However, the bunny hopping would be eliminated.
There is no failure in the least. It has been explained ad nauseum there is a difference between bunny hopping and jumping. So perhaps there has been a failure...as you appear to think anybody has been arguing against jumping, while nobody has made that case.
You are attempting to shut down another person's argument by saying that the two items are apples and oranges. But you fail to see how weak standing on this little platform is. Using the criteria I described, it should be more than obvious to you that these two items are indeed apples to apples. The reason that running and bunny hopping is not apples to apples is quite clear. That you wish to make the argument that they are simply shows the failed logic you are applying in saying that jumping and bunny hopping are the same. Is bunny hopping a form of jumping? Nobody would argue that. However, they are not the same. Much as both apples and oranges are both fruit... it does not mean that apples are oranges nor that oranges are apples.
If you think that it looks just as silly... then what has been the point of your arguing that it is not silly? This thread is about whether or not bunny hopping is silly. You have just stated that it is. If you feel something else is silly is beyond the point, given the rather simple question posed by the OP.
To each their own, I suppose.
An odd thing to state when you just agreed with the OP after how many posts appearing to be against it...
...it was feeling somewhat trollish on your part, and I suppose this just confirmed that.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?
Eh, whatever. The endless back and forth is boring now. You still can't see that it can indeed be apples to apples. Oh well.
One can see how a toddler going through his oral phase would explore the various items he could put in his mouth. He might grab a handful of dirt. He might grab a handful of Cheerios. To this todder, both are items he can put in his mouth. They are apples to apples.
One can also see how as the child grows, he would realize that although both items remain something that can be placed in his mouth - the dirt and the Cheerios are vastly different. He will have developed the cognitive ability to differentiate the toy as apples and oranges.
It is obvious where the discussion with you has been a waste of time in regard to how bunny hopping and running (both forms of movement) are like dirt and Cheerios.
Bunny hopping is fine. Jogging everywhere is fine. That's my opinion. The end.
But you just said that it was silly. You agreed with the OP. Now you do not?
This is tedious and boring. While there was a discussion in regard to whether bunny hopping was silly or not in MMORPGs, once you agreed that it was - that was pretty much it. End of discussion for this thread.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?
Wow, now you are resorting to insults because you can't see that it can be an apple to apple comparison based on criteria.
I feel bad for you, man.
There was no insult. It was an analogy. Different people have different analytical and cognitive skills. I was not putting you down in the least for your limited abilities. If it came across in such a manner, I sincerely apologize. I was just trying to help you see the error of your argument. Helpful. Not trying to cause you any grief.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?
I think bunny hopping in a game where it can effectively be utilized to avoid being hit looks far less 'silly' than simply standing there letting yourself be smashed into the ground.
Bunny hopping in a game with fps aiming like Darkfall is common sense. Constantly hitting spacebar to jump in a standard mmorpg which has autolock (and thus no need to jump) is totally different and is indeed 'silly'.
That being said how can you say trying to jump out of the way of something is anymore daft than half the stuff you see in your standard mmo? People running around in no armour and various furries and the like.
"Come and have a look at what you could have won."
You can't see the difference between comparing "cheerios and dirt" and comparing "running and jumping."
It's getting silly.
Once again, and for the last time (because you are obviously trolling at this point)...
...you are the only person comparing "running and jumping" in this thread.
The apples and oranges argument was not made in regard to running and jumping. It was made in regard to running and bunny hopping. Is bunny hopping a form of jumping? Yes, but that is the point - it is a form of jumping.
Running and jumping.
Running and bunny hopping? Not going to work.
Sprinting and bunny hopping? You would have something there. Sprinting is a form of running.
Literally, either it is a case that you cannot conceptualize such simple stratification or you are trolling. Considering the rank you are sporting for the number of posts you have; I have to figure the latter is more likely.
Done trying to discuss this with you. Good day.

I get it. Call everyone a troll that debunks your weak argument. Endlessly defend your point of view no matter how off base it is and then, at the very end, call the other guy that is arguing with you a troll.
Bunny hopping and jogging everywhere you go are perfectly comparable. You are unable to see the difference between comparing those two things and comparing cheerios and dirt. That is your problem, not mine.

Not entirely sure what point you are trying to make, that video showed people running and jumping in an FPS targetting mmorpg in order to avoid being hit.
Heres a clip from a tab target game with no bunny hopping:

I did not really see that many people jumping. I saw a few people fly through the air with big jumps, but the movement overall looked pretty slow compared to a FPS. It is not quite what I expected when you gave it as an example game.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?
Wow...people are really passionate about bunny hopping. All i know is it annoys the hell out of me...but if it's mechanics somehow convey freedom to a select group of easily amused players...then have at it. Comparing it to running...the default manner of getting from A to B in most MMOs and a norm for typical travel just doesn't make sense to me...as bunny hopping is not the norm and merely a completely optional and avoidable overuse (and sometimes abuse) of a simple jump mechanic built into many MMOs. I always looked at jumping as a required mechanic( and it's absence sometimes game breaking)..so I don't get confined by a 2 inch rock or small ledge...or to leap from one ledge to another or access various other elevated or blocked areas or for tactical dodges in combat. I never once considered it a great release from the pressures of boredom in a video game.
In real life...if I see someone running by..or into a store...I may think there is a sense of urgency to that person's actions then dismiss the event. If I see someone standing still or running while constantly bunny-hopping..I would think they were insane...being attacked by a swarm of bees..or retarded. I wonder which would be true?
I happen to agree with those that state this is an "apples vs. oranges" comparison. Yes..the game mechanics may allow you to do both..running and bunny hopping...but one is a default accepted manner of transportation...the other is a bastardization of a space bar function outside of it's original intent....and when used in PvP...is no better than a hack imo.

"Come and have a look at what you could have won."
The first clip did indeed point out actual issues, but it also pointed to the fact that even in a game where there is no bunny hopping how characters move about can look just as ridiculous.
I have to admit I only managed 4 minutes or so of the clip of WoW you provided, it seemed to look appalling as far as i'm concerned (oddly the weird way the character was walking/striding about looked worse then when it was jumping) but I am sure there are many who think otherwise.
"Come and have a look at what you could have won."
In WoW, much of the hopping is done through the target to cause a loss of facing. You jump through them, mouse spin, continue to attack, while they attempt to regain facing. That normally leads to the discussion on the keyboard turners. Turning via keyboard in WoW is slower than any other game I have ever played. It is a trip how slow it is. So you right click and spin to maintain that facing. Hopping favors those with instant cast abilities (whether melee, ranged, or magic) - because those with a timed cast...cannot move.

Yeah, never understood those that defend the graphics or animations in WoW - was trying to offer a clip showing people jumping for no reason. Right there in the beginning, the Warlock is making a run for the crates to drop a portal... an opposing Mage roots. The Warlock was jumping... WoW does not have strafe jumping or the like. Whether you are jumping or simply running, you are still moving at the same 7-8 yds/sec.
