How many people have multiple accounts?

AmbassadorDvinnAmbassadorDvinn Member UncommonPosts: 339

Honestly, what percentage of the playerbase has multiple accounts?

I love EVE but the fact that everyone has multiple accounts puts me off.  Does anyone have any sort of info with legit numbers as to how many people really have multiple accounts?  It seems like majority have atleast 2 accounts.

Serious death penalties makes every close call an adrenaline rush, and every minor achievement a major victory. This alternative rule-set should be in all MMORPGs.

No one has that info but CCP.

THe last time they posted anything on it i believe it was just over 15% with multiple accounts.

Since your asking for offical data i wont even guess.

Yeah, no way to know for sure. I know OP didn't ask for guesses but my guess would be 25% or less.

Thats possible considering the last percentage given by CCP was in what? late 08, early 09?

I would guess more than 15% for sure.  I would say a 25% guess is still a little low.  I don't know though, maybe I just keep joining the corps where every member has multiple accounts.

    I honestly don't know.

To be perfectly honest I never let it bother me.

I would play Eve my way (one account currently) even if everyone else had ten.

What's your current playstyle within EVE with one account?  Just curious.

I have two pilots on my account.

One PVE oriented Gallente Pilot.  He does my L4s, my High and low sec exploration.

My second and Main pilot is Amarrian flys AFs, BC, Hacs, Recons, Sniper BS, Command (fuck almost everything) he's my pvp pilot.

I started with my main pilot as a straight pver and then rerolled and made a pvp one.

Admittingly i did have a second account originally but after about four months i no longer needed to train him so i paid to put him on my pvper account. I could have easily done this with one however.

Addition: My pvping is more of the small gang variety. I did the null sec shit and it bored me. I would rather harrass people in low. I've also done my share of solo pvp which is extremely challenging .

Ahh, that's a good idea.  I have a pirate in low sec and a miner/trader/BS pilot in high sec.  I never thought to combine them into one account.  I'll have to strongly consider doing that.  Maybe that'll get me to start playing again..

Those official figures cannot be accurate at least not from my personal experience, nearly every other player I know have at least two accounts and many have more than two and in the more extreme cases they have four or five accounts. In total out of all the people I have regular contact with less than a dozen have a single account, in fact I know more people who have a huge amount of accounts than I know people with a single account.

What the real statistics are I have no clue but I would estimate at least 50% of players have multiple accounts. Having alts is just to convenient, if your a miner having a hauler alt is useful, if your a pvper having alts to scout with or if your sec status is borked is handy and if you fly any kind of Capitol ship at least one alt is pretty much essential and this is just for utility and not even going into wanting to try out a new training tree or profession.

    Gravity Rush,

Yeah.  That is exactly what bothers me about EVE.  No one really depends on others to do the work so they just get another account to avoid the hassle to pay another player to do the grunt work, which a lot newbies would be more than happy to do to make a few isk.  I don't know, for me, it just takes away from it all when you've got one guy running a gang of 5 ships.  It just takes away from the whole thing.

Yeah, I know of that problem, but find a good group of people and stick with them. If you do, you won't need multiple accounts for stuff like scouting and maintaining bases and what not. Great corps exist out there, just gotta find them.

EDITED to not sound like a douche.

Saying that 15% of players have multiple accounts is not the same as saying that 15% of accounts are alts.

If we have 5 guys with 1 account and 1 guy with 5 accounts, then 15% of players have multiple accounts, but 50% of accounts are alts.

1 guys could run 5 mining ships (lolmining), but managing even 2 ships in a fight is insanely hard. 5 would simply be impossible.

Hard to use on 0.0, however in low sec, it is quite common to use:

    1 PVP ship
    1 hauler+prober+rr
    1 command ship
    1 scout

That is what solo PVP in EVE is nowadays...

I defer to your superior experience in lo-sec, but I would point out that only one of those is actually fighting.

I used to do the dual box thing myself back in the day, with a falcon and a command ship to support the gang, but honestly it's a lot of work, you really have to concentrate hard. Now I like to just fly one ship most of the time, and give that my full attention. Occasionally I'll dual box carrier/BS for structure shoots.

I never said you have to control all of them at the same time, that is your perception only. Having multiply accounts do not imply such use either.

The point is, you are used to 0.0 where indeed controlling more ships would be significantly more difficult, not so much in low sec and empire where your alt ships can move around pretty safely.

Ah, I forgot the ewar alts...

I don't see why it should bother anyone. I mean leave that crazy bastard with 10 accounts alone... Atleast he's giving ccp a ton of cash. More money equals a better game overall for all of us. I honestly just don't let a lot of this stuff bother me. Maybe it's the new Yorker i'n me. I don't give a shot about anyone but me.

Well...it sucks to have intense fight and then watch the hauler to pop up with new supply of boosters.

If you want, in a comparison to popular F2P hate, it is like purchasing buffs from Item mall.

2 accounts here, one is my main, the other is my prober/hauler. I can care less about other people having multiple accounts, is it fair? Probably not, but when was eve ever a fair game?

EDIT: i also made my alt especially for probing as well after the other probers i fleeted with took 10 minutes to scan something down.

I have to ask but what sort of people do you associate with?

It could be your perception is based on the type of people you associate with rather than a generall eve trend afterall a empire mining corp wont need as many alts as it would have more fresh recruites to do stuff like hauling ore from a mining op or just mining?

Also a 0.0 or very lowsec operation would have less people it can trust as the risk v reward is higher so alts is a good option.

Also what about the DEEP 0.0 resident corp? Do they buy ammo locally or do they buy it cheap thanks to a trader alt and have it hauled to them thanks to a hauler alt and some high sec based escort alts [if needed].

Its a valid question as for me in a corp of 12 operating in 0.5 and wormhole space most of us has just one account with the odd hauler alt to bring P.O.S fuel and any other supplies like spare ships and modules ammo etc, oh and a couple of carrier alts to help guard the pos [heh its a nice setup as capitals cant enter ower Wormhole yet we can build them, makes gas mining and sleeper farming much more secure].

Another great example of Moore's Law. Give people access to that much space (developers and users alike) and they'll find uses for it that you can never imagine. "640K ought to be enough for anybody" - Bill Gates 1981

Usually in smaller corps of 30 or less members and doing small gang (3-10 man) pvp, mostly roaming in low sec and 0.0 and occasionally in WHs if one pops up locally. I have been in larger corps that where members of alliances like CH but generally I like small gang stuff as I hate blob warfare.

My play style would colour my perspective and never being in an Industrial or PVE corp limits my perspective but is the difference that huge? I couldn't say in all honesty but many of the reasons why someone in my position would find alts handy apply to those playstyles are still valid and they also have their own unique reasons.

Take for example industrialists, you are limited to a hardcap of exactly how many research or manufacturing jobs you can run so if you have a large scale operation having an alt that can run additional jobs is a useful thing to have so you can avoid running into a brick wall that limits your opportunity for expansion and profit.

Not that I am trying to say alts are essential or anything as you can play the game perfectly well on one character (well you will want an alt if you fly a capship tbh) and with some teamwork you can handle anything that the game can throw at you its just that having alts is very convenient and gives you some extra independence.

Also as an afterthought being able to fund game time with ISK makes alts more common as many players can easily run extra accounts with PLEX, industrialists, traders or people doing high level PVE like WHs, level 5 missions or 0.0 exploration/anomalies have loads of disposable income and they can easily afford 300m a month to run additional accounts.
