SWG Game Update 17.9 - Gone Fishing!

SWG Game Update 17.9 - Gone Fishing!

Highlights

  • Fishing Leaderboard - The Fishing Leaderboard is a new in-game feature that keeps track of the leading individual, guild, and city anglers across each galaxy. It displays the ranks, lists the leaders' names, and the total length of the best fish caught for each leader. The Fishing Leaderboard scoring period is weekly and starts/ends every Thursday at 19:00:00 GMT / 11:00:00 PST / 12:00:00 PDT (same time as the GCW rank and Leaderboard update). At the end of the period, the winners are determined and the list (along with all the scores) is reset to start a new period.

    • Individual Leaders: The total length of the best 10 non-collection fish caught during the period are used to determine the angler's Fishing Leaderboard score.

    • Guild/City Leaders: The total length of the best 25 non-collection fish caught during the period by the members/citizens of the guild/city are used to determine the guild/city Fishing Leaderboard score.

  • Fishing Record - The Fishing Record displays the type of fish caught, the planet on which it was caught, the length of the fish, the name of the angler (person who caught it), as well as the location, time and the bait used. For each galaxy, best length fish is tracked for each of the 70 non-collection fish (7 fish types x 10 planets). The angler who catches a non-collection fish whose length is greater than or equal to the current record will become the new record holder. Personal best is also tracked for each angler for each of the 70 non-collection fish.

  • Elusive Fish - Elusive Fish are rare fish that are hard to catch! There are only 70 ELUSIVE fish (one for each of the 70 non-collection fish types) for each galaxy. To view the ELUSIVE fish list, use any fishing pole. For each time that the very lucky angler appears on the ELUSIVE fish list, as long as the angler has logged in within the past 90 days, one travel point will be granted to the angler's current guild and city for each time that the angler appears on the ELUSIVE fish list. This is a permanent perk.

STAR WARS GALAXIES: GALACTIC LEADERS - GAME UPDATE 17.9

Fishing

  • General

    • The Fishing Total - Type and Fishing Total - Planet sections in the Hobbies tab of the Collections window and displays a total count of non-collection fish the angler has caught, broken down by the 7 fish types, by the 10 planets. It is not retroactive.

  • Fishing Leaderboard

    • The Fishing Leaderboard scoring period is weekly and starts/ends every Thursday at 19:00:00 GMT / 11:00:00 PST / 12:00:00 PDT (same time as the GCW rank and Leaderboard update). At the end of the period, the winners are determined and the list (along with all the scores) is reset to start a new period.

    • Fishing leaderboard tracking will start Thursday September 30 2010 at 19:00:00 GMT / 12:00:00 PDT, and the first set of winners will be determined the following Thursday October 7 2010 at 19:00:00 GMT / 12:00:00 PDT.

    • The total length of the best 10 non-collection fish caught during the Fishing Leaderboard period are used to determine the angler's Fishing Leaderboard score.

    • The total length of the best 25 non-collection fish caught during the Fishing Leaderboard period by the members/citizens of the guild/city are used to determine the guild/city Fishing Leaderboard score.

    • An angler that has just joined a guild/city will not contribute to the guild/city Fishing Leaderboard for her guild/city for the current period. She will start contributing to her guild/city Fishing Leaderboard at the start of the next Fishing Leaderboard period.

    • Whenever the angler/guild/city position on the Fishing Leaderboard for the current period changes, a message is sent to the chat/guildchat/citychat window for the angler/all guild members/all citizens notifying of the position change for the angler/guild/city.

    • In-game mail is sent to the anglers/guild leaders/mayors of the winners when a Fishing Leaderboard period ends, and the winners for the angler/guild/city Leaderboards are determined.

    • Use any fishing pole to view the Fishing Leaderboard.

    • The Fishing Leaderboard section in the Hobbies tab of the Collections window displays the count of how many times the angler has made the Fishing Leaderboard winners list.

    • The Fishing Leaderboard section in the Badges tab of the Collections window displays badges the angler has earned from the Fishing Leaderboard. Badges are granted for winning 1st place, and for making the Fishing Leaderboard winners list 1 time, 5 times, 10 times, 15 times... etc.

    • The Fishing Leaderboard section in the Hobbies tab of the Collections window displays the count of how many times the angler was a guild member/citizen of a guild/city that made the Fishing Leaderboard winners list.

    • The Fishing Leaderboard section in the Badges tab of the Collections window displays badges the angler has earned for being a guild member/citizen of a guild/city that made the Fishing Leaderboard winners list. Badges are granted for being a guild member/citizen of a guild/city that won 1st place, and for being a guild member/citizen 1 time, 5 times, 10 times, 15 times... etc. of a guild/city that made the Fishing Leaderboard winners list.

    • The angler must have been eligible to contribute to the guild/city Fishing Leaderboard score (i.e. did not just recently join the guild/city) for the period for which the guild/city made the Fishing Leaderboard winners list. They must have also caught a non-collection fish during the period (even if that non-collection fish does not end up contributing to the guild/city winning score), in order to qualify to receive credit for being a guild member/citizen of a guild/city that made the Fishing Leaderboard winners list.

    • The guilds and cities in the most recent winners list will be given access to 1 guild/city travel point.

    • The guild/city travel point privilege is revoked if the guild/city does not make the next winners list. To reiterate, the guild/city travel point privilege is only available to the guilds and cities in the most recent winners list.

  • Fishing Record

    • For each galaxy, best length fish is tracked for each of the 70 non-collection fish (7 fish types x 10 planets).

    • The angler who catches a non-collection fish whose length is greater than or equal to the current record will become the new record holder.

    • Personal best is also tracked for each angler for each of the 70 non-collection fish.

    • Use any fishing pole to view the galaxy best, the angler's personal best, and the personal best of another targeted angler.

    • A record fish will be renamed to designate it as a record fish, and its Examine window will contain additional record fish information.

    • A "Record Data" radial menu is available on any non-collection fish that will display the galaxy best and the angler's personal best information for that particular fish type.

    • Titles (70 available) are granted to the current record holder. When there is a new record holder, the title will be removed from the current record holder and granted to the new record holder.

    • Badges (70 available) are granted for catching a record fish.

    • Badges are granted for catching 1, 5, 10, 15..., 100 record fish.

    • A collection under the Fishing Record section in the Hobbies tab of the Collections window displays the count of record fish caught by the angler.

    • 7 collections (1 for each fish type), with server first and a badge as reward, under the Fishing Record section in the Hobbies tab of the Collections window are available for catching a record fish of the particular type on all 10 planets.

    • 10 collections (1 for each planet), with server first and a badge as reward, under the Fishing Record section in the Hobbies tab of the Collections window are available for catching a record fish for all the 7 types on the particular planet.

    • All 70 fishing records are currently held by various NPCs. The current record length and which NPC currently holds which record are different for each galaxy.

    • These NPCs are actually quite avid anglers who have recently come out of the closet to reveal their ...errr...ummm... ichthyologic tendencies, so it will take some effort to best their records.

    • The angler that becomes the new record holder will get a Comm Message from the NPC who originally held that particular record, who will have a thing or two to say to the new record holder.

    • There are more NPCs than the 70 available fishing records, so some NPCs will not be record holders on some galaxies. So if Darth Vader is not a record holder on your galaxy, you'll just have to go fishing on a galaxy where Vader is a record holder if you want to receive a Comm Message from the angling Dark Lord.

  • The ELUSIVE Fish

    • Tales abound of the one that always manages to get away. Are there any truths to these stories, or are they just overactive imagination after too many rounds of Valarian Brandy?

    • There are only 70 ELUSIVE fish (one for each of the 70 non-collection fish types) for each galaxy. The odds of successfully landing an ELUSIVE fish are much, much, much greater than that of successfully navigating an asteroid field, even if Han doesn't want to hear it.

    • Use any fishing pole to view the ELUSIVE fish list.

    • An ELUSIVE fish will be renamed to designate it as an ELUSIVE fish. For example, “a faa” may be changed to “the ELUSIVE Tatooine faa”.

    • Badges (70 available) are granted for catching an ELUSIVE fish.

    • The Dev Team reserves the right to revisit the "only 70 ELUSIVE fish per galaxy" rule once any galaxy has caught all its 70 ELUSIVE fish. Good luck with such an elusive feat/challenge/accomplishment though.

    • For each time that the (very lucky) angler appears on the ELUSIVE fish list, as long as the angler has logged in within the past 90 days, one travel point will be granted to the angler's current guild and city for each time that the angler appears on the ELUSIVE fish list. This is a permanent perk. Guild/City travel point update occurs at galaxy restart and at the end of the Leaderboard period every Thursday at 19:00:00 GMT / 11:00:00 PST / 12:00:00 PDT, so the perk will not be applied immediately when the angler catches an ELUSIVE fish, but will be applied at the next guild/city travel point update. If the angler leaves/joins a guild/city, the perk will be removed/applied at the next guild/city travel point update. The perk will not transfer with the angler with CTS. The angler must get on the ELUSIVE fish list of the destination galaxy in order to receive the perk.

Portable Bazaar Terminal

  • Fix issue where a Portable Bazaar Terminal that is named a certain way is not functional. Existing Portable Bazaar Terminal that is not functional because of the way it is named will start working with this fix.

  • Fix issue with the Place Bid button on the All Auctions tab being hidden after using the Portable Bazaar Terminal and then switching to the real bazaar terminal.

Crafting

  • Crafting station buffs can no longer be dispelled or purged.

Guilds

  • Minor change to the guild sponsorship message to clarify that this is an offer from another player.

Misc

  • Fixed more codestrings in the bazaar.

When fishing becomes the featured attraction of a Star Wars game, the end truly is nigh.

This isn't even a "Featured Attraction" really, it is very quietly badged as "Hotfix 17.9" and not given its own update.

This is why I wanted to post a thread about it, just to give it a bit more visibility for those that might like this kind of system.

Before you sub, try it out (link to trial)

    1) It's not "free", SWG charges $15/mo

    2) It's far from "excellent" fishing

I would personally recommend LotrO, as it has both - FREE + good fishing (no such thing as 'excellent' fishing imo ;) )

I actually prefer fishing to any other types of mats gathering in MMO's. It is a bit tough to find MMO's with good fishing or actually have a use for the fish. I might check this out.

The rare loot system sounds interesting albeit 5 years too late, time to bug a gm and see if he will bump me to 90 I might just return for a look but i know all my gear is on a holding account with a level 12 or so.

  • thamighty213thamighty213 Member UncommonPosts: 1,637

so fishing is like high heats in Aion the nail in my Aion coffin events that promote entire server to afk.

  • Shelby13Shelby13 Member Posts: 79

The devs copied the leaderboard code from GCW into the fishing system.. tacked on a few funny game messages.. probably took a dev weekend or two to patch together for the fun of it.

Not everything in a game needs to be about combat.. its about living in a virtual world and being part of it.  Fishing is just another way to chill out and explore and enjoy the scenery.

Thanks for keeping MMORPG up to date Badger!

But yes, Star wars MMO and a fishing update? While i loved the pvp and heroics the game never really progresses. Always these pathetic updates that everyone on the forums seems to say "Great update!!". They should really add more big content like new a new open PvP area, i'm sure everyone is getting sick of Restuss, or new heroics. GCW updates did nothing tbh. The only reason people bother to do the stupid content they put out is because of the items you can get and with the current economy on SWG, a brown teddy bear could be worth 50m in as little as 1 week.

  • sungodrasungodra Member Posts: 1,376

I will repeat. Fishing update is stupid, it is the LAST thing that this game needed. How about some server mergers? How about a revamp to the whole legacy grind? Make it interesting or something.

Now we have another thing for the player base to afk.  SOE could have came up with a ton of things to better this game, instead they came up with fishing. Something now that they have turned into some kind of competition with leaderboards.

They need to make something alot more appealing than fishing to bring this vet back to the game.  I think f2p is probably their best option, IMO game is not even worth the 15 dollar a month anymore, and last time I checked they charge 50 dollars to move off a dead server. Even though I heard rumors that they reduced it to 25 dollars, which is a step in the right direction tbh.

I am not pleased with the fishing update. Tearing apart communities to be honest.

Well tbh, he was a level 60 or so BH trying to take some jedi's bounty. The jedi was afk, I guess he had an attack macro in case he came under attack by a BH or something.

Once you get to 90 the game is fun, if you don't have lvl 90 toons already. But you do the same 5-6 heroics everyday and then some BF's or world pvp. When there is PVP the game is really fun.. This is some of the best pvp I have seen in any game. I have videos to show you.

Other than that, I don't want to play unless there is pvp going on. You better find yourself on flurry or starsider if you want that.

What's with MMOG's and fishing lately? From MO to WOW, now SWG. Fishing is being mentioned more in 2010 than any previous year, if I want to go fishing why would I log into an MMO?

It's not like this is a new feature to grace MMO's, fishing has been in SWG since like 03.

I feel the same way,  buddy. Why would I waste hours of my life fishing in an MMO, when it is so much better to just fish in real life. Never understand games about fishing, and really don't like it in my MMO. Especially a star wars one at that. You think they came along way from fishing in a galaxies far far away. They probably have a better means of catching fish.

Ok, so what has fishing done that is good for the community?  Now everyone is off fishing somewhere and there is no groups and no pvp going on. Everyone is in some ridiculous competition to be at the top of leaderboard and have some new badge or title or some BS.

Should be making stuff to bring the community together, my old home server is Dead as a brick and they bring fishing? That just takes eveyone away from the fun things about the game.  What about improving city invasion or something?

Cheers for fishing I suppose, if you like that kind of thing. If it doesn't bring the community together and just makes dead servers look even less populated , than it is not for me.

That's pretty much all I have to say about that as of right now.

     Ok... I'll compare.

    It's better than wow pvp.

It would be better than WAR pvp if they didn't have that /flag system and they had more people pvping.

(btw I like war pvp, but I prefer the SWG battles I had to be honest. Seem like I had to put more thought into my pvping in SWG. I like star wars anyhow... but war RVR system is preferable over swg system they have now)

Aion , I liked the pvp in aion better, sorry SWG.

out of the games I have played I guess SWG would rank in 3rd . Not the best, but it is up there.

This is when there is pvp going on. On some servers it is so dead they don't even have pvp anymore.

It's all down to personal opinion ofc, but I found SWG pvp pretty poor in all honesty. Of the games I've played I'd put UO, DAoC, DF, EVE, WAR, and GW above it.

It is interesting that you thought SWG requires more forethought than WAR, the general concensus from speaking to players who have played both tends to be the opposite.

Still it's horses for courses I guess, personal lists aside lol I agree with your overall prognosis.

I played BH and Medic.... Yea, I think SWG does require a lil more thought than some of these other games.

Out of the games you listed. Didn't play UO, I played Nexustk. Didn't like EVE. Didn't like DF. Didn't like GW.

As I said, I prefer the RVR system in war, than the system they have in SWG.

Anyhow, moving back to topic. The fishing update may be something they just added. Yea, looks like new content, but is it really?  Seems to me like a time sink and a quick fix they got going on right now for some of the player base. But it wouldn't interest me in the least bit.

can anyone currently playing SWG discuss how the fishing is? Not to derail the thread, but what games other than SWG has better fishing? Reading these notes, it seems that they actually put some good ideas forth.  I understand that maybe the game needed other things/fixes, but i'm more concerned about the fishing in this thread. Thanks for any information.

SWG devs they dont have anything new to add and the revamp everything with mindless grind

1st gcw badges, 700 in number iirc

2nd fishing badges, 244 in number

3rd rare loot system, huge mindless grind for special rare items

after 3 years of playing and trying to finish collections/badges and collecting items, this is my last drop that wanna makes me wanna cancel

fan of SWG, XCOM, Defiance, Global Agenda, Need For Speed, all Star Wars single player games. And waiting the darn STAR CITIZEN

Check out this great SWG guide to Fishing video.

There is also fishing mini-game in Free Realms that my kids like, it's F2P but level limited to level 4 out of level 20 Fisherman.
