BioWare Mythic is celebrating the 20th anniversary of classic PC space combat franchise Wing Commander with an Electronic Arts-sanctioned re-release. Strap in and get ready to blast some space cats.
In 1990, Origin Systems released designer Chris Roberts' Wing Commander to critical and commercial acclaim. The title quickly gained a large and loyal following for its intense spaceship combat gameplay and storyline that pitted humans against the Kilrathi, a race of warrior felinoids. (Yup, I just wrote the word "felinoids.")
BioWare Mythic Creative Director Paul Barnett is leading the charge to bring back and celebrate the franchise, and he's been charting his intentions and progress via his Twitter account:
"Wing commander Turns 20, I am hard at work seeing if we can dosbox and release it! Come on ea legal... Now is the time to shine!" Barnett tweeted on the 26th.
EA evidently gave the project the preliminary thumbs up, and yesterday, Barnett detailed how quickly his plan came together with a series of tweets: "Now have a dosbox'ed version of Wing Commander plus secret missions."
"Tech guys removed the copy protection question from the Wing commander build!"
"Now having the Wing commander game data compared to our original source code, we need a clean bill of health at this stage!"
The good news continued coming from Barnett today, including his intention to bring the project to the masses gratis:
"Today we get data compare sign off for wing commander, Dr. Ray will be hearing the pitch, from there only legal can stop us!"
"My plan is wing commander one, drm free and security bypassed. For FREE ( fingers crossed)."

I hope they pull it off. On a side note, since I remember the original release I now feel incredibly old.
Wow, good memories of that game. Right up there with x-wing and tie fighter. Made my 386 computer gasp for breath. This could be pretty cool, although a part of me fears that my nostalgia is glossing over some pretty horrible parts, kind of like my memories of Dragon Warrior and old Saturday morning cartoons.
A Modest Proposal for MMORPGs:
That the means of progression would not be mutually exclusive from the means of enjoyment.
I still play these games constantly especially the Heart Of The Tiger and The Price Of Freedom nothing beats a space shooter with Mark Hamill and Malcom Mc Dowell and Biff Tannen :P
