Nope. It's been in video games since the beginning and we're all used to it.

Misogyny is manifested in many different ways, from jokes to pornography to violence to the self-contempt women may be taught to feel for their own bodies.

It can certainly be interpreted as misogyny.

That's fine, in situations where a woman is being oppressed by someone.. sure.  Not in this situation.  It's a female digital avatar and a young kid joking about the rear end of the character.  Degrading to female avatars?  What's the difference between an insult and a compliment?  The kid nor the vendor behind him is being mysoginistic.  They are simply being immature.  People are too damn sensitive about everything.  It's like everyone is a little baby and the slightest change in their environment makes them cry hysterically.  It's pathetic.

I agree with you for the most part. I have zero problem with what they are doing. It's their game. No one is forcing anyone to play it.

Do I think they will end up alienating part of their population because people will view their design as misogynist? Yes, I do. And I also think that those people are overly sensitive. It doesn't make me right though.

I'm talking about what he says during the first 30 seconds of the video. The video game industry really needs to start moving away from this kind of behaviour if it wants to be more widely accepted (and I dunno about you, but I do want that). It's both immuature and mysoginistic and I find it to be disgraceful.

Tell me I'm not the only one.

You're splitting hairs over one word.

Anyway, people seem to be misinterpreting me here. Personally I find this kind of thing to be crass, but not bad enough that I will stop playing a game. I'm also concerned not just with TERA but with the gaming industry as a whole, in which this kind of design is all too common. My point is that it alienates a whole potential audience, and is holding back the medium from being taken seriously by the wider society. Sure, this is a problem with society as well - people need to be more open-minded and less easily outraged, but we're not exactly helping with this sort of thing. Did anyone actually watch that video I posted? I'll post it again just to be sure.

What bothered me from that video was that aged old horrible player animation when running. That  hunched over stance is just awful,i have no idea why this is so widely used in Koren games,it looks crap and is not realsitic.I can accept a non realistic animation if it actually looked good, but tha tneeds to be removed from the Korean game archives for all eternity.

We go around in these games murdering and pillaging all day long.

But if we see a woman's bare bottom, oh, well then... lets all get offended.

    Pathetic.

Maybe that the idea is that it's not supposed to be realistic and they have essentially created a sort of mythology that allows there characters to strike poses that they find interesting.

You might not find it aesthetically pleasing but it seems many do.

I know when I first started Lineage 2 as a dark elf I ran for the first time and saw that I was hunced over. I couldn't find the key that would turn it off. Even logged out to find some info because it seemed I had accidentally turned on some feature.

After learning that this was how they ran I quickly got used to it and even liked it as it reminded me of "sharks" or wolves even. With the body keeping lower to the ground when coming in for the kill.

It's probably something along those lines. It's an interesting take on stance and movement.

In any case I'm not bothered by it. As Cujo said, we spend so much time killing things and then we see a woman's bum and it's "run for the hills".

granted it's probably a more adolescent take on sexuality but "meh" I think it's ok to revisit that place as long as we don't start catcalling real women and inflicting that behavior on them.

If you are so worried about these things and don't like asian art in mmo than maybe this game is not for you. Move to another game, there are a lot in the market that will fullfill better your tastes. Cya.

The castanic's are not human in stature,  if they were then I would expect them to run in an upright manner.  IMO it would be totally unrealistic to have a non human character run like a human.

While I tend to agree that this sort of macho oversexualization (which is especially brought to the surface in Korean games most of the time btw) is not doing the video game industry any favors - the problem is as much with a culture that's willing to pay to see those things.  I'm not saying that most gamers want softcore porn in their games, but the demand is coming from somewhere.  If you feel that strongly about it, be sure to avoid games where it's the highlight, such as Bayonetta, etc, and encourage others to do the same.

The Castanic and to a lesser extent High Elven females in TERA might be over the top - but there are enough other choices that you can enjoy the game just fine without playing one.  Games like that shouldn't necessarily be targeted so heavily or blamed for this problem - we are talking about something that came from a different culture after all.

I'm more optimistic about the direction the video game industry is moving myself.  Even though most of the heavy marketing is done for the action/sports/girl hungry crowd - there's still plenty of modest and more artistic titles available if you look.  Things like the games made by the director of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, and soon the Last Guardian (I forget his name).  There's also visionaries like Miyamoto that bring us innocent fun like Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc.  In MMOs you've got Anet with it's artistic focus in GW, etc.  And that's not even getting into Indy games.  There's a good amount out there for a wider audience to enjoy, it's just easier to market to philistines, I guess lol.

    @ CujoSWAoA and DiSpLiFF

Did you actually take the time to read what I wrote, and rexplained in subsequent posts? I'm not the one getting offended (though I do find it distasteful). Nor is it I who needs to grow up, it's the industry (and the rest of the society). This portrayal of women is immature. And I'm not even going to get started on video games' obsession with violence and combat.

Sure, sex does sell, and there certainly is a place for games like Bayonetta. But sex isn't the only thing that can sell a product, as the commercial success of games like Shadow of the Colossus has shown us.

Right I've said pretty much everything I have to say at least twice now. I'll shut up about it now.

    Always read the small print.

problem is that not many people have good morals anymore.  i'm very bothered by this, makes me feel like i'm playing a game created by perverts and it's this kind of stuff that makes guys look at women as a sex toy rather then human being that should be treated with respect, especially with this sort of thing.

  • Loke666Loke666 Member EpicPosts: 21,441

The guy trying it is pretty immature and I don't really see the need to show panties in a combat based MMO.

But sex sells, that is the sad truth behind it.

robbing people pays bills.  the question is should it be done?  nope.  that excuse is what's giving these devs the freedom to do whatever they want.

This is the internet, it's full of the most debased and debauched material, and you choose to get offended over this?

    Give me a break.

Also, nothing wrong with good looking sexy girls in games. I LIKE good looking sexy girls in my games. What's your problem witg good looking sexy girls?

That running gait on the other hand... LOL... looks like she should be wearing calipers.

Would you prefer to restrict the freedoms of dev's in regards to creatiivity ?  Why do you think there is a mature rating system in place when it comes to entertainment, no matter what format that entertainment comes in !!

Exactly, no one says a word about the chiseled buffed hero males that parade around shoving their crotches out (have you seen how some models in Aion stand? lol), but have a girl show her knickers and people get all het up.

that's not creativity.  did those devs create women wearing hardly any clothes?  pretty sure that idea was around before Tera was even an idea....

So, the fact that a bunch of "geeks" that have probably never been alone in a room with a "real" girl coding a game were they can get their rocks off to digitized panties makes you upset?  Aren't there more important things in this world to give 2 sh_ts about?  If this is what really pisses you off, then read the news more often and care about things that really matter.
