Really starting to lose patience with this game

Okay, so even with all the compaints in beta with controls, interface, etc. I tried to look past all the negatives I was reading and enjoy a game for it's sights, sounds, and story. Because I was able to look past some of the issues most have been complaining about, I really started to enjoy the game in beta and eventually made the decision that I was going to go ahead with the purchase of the CE I had on reserve. Even though the game clearly needs to iron out some issues, I see its potential.

Now, here I am Friday afternoon, after purchasing the game on Wednesday and I still can't play. I'm none too pleased, to say the least.

First off, my problems started when for some odd reason I couldn't get the install to work. Specifically, my disc drive wouldn't read the DVD. Tried several other discs including the 'Making' video and everyone worked except the game disc. Finally after hours of trying everything under the sun, I finally got the drive to read the disc.

So, I proceed with the install, which goes smoothly I might add, yet now I'm stuck with an ungodly slow update (yes I opened all the ports that I could find listed via FFXIV Core or ZAM). I then decide, seeing it looks like it will be a while, I'll take care of all the account requirements. I do this expicitly following the directions so that I won't have a problem transfering the OB account over the the Retail version. No problems, everything looks to be in order.

Now I'm all set and ready to log in, oh that's right I can't, cause now that I have everything in order the world that I played on in beta is closed and I can't see it to select it. From what I've read, I'm under the understanding that I need to play on the same world I was in during beta. So, when they finally do decide to allow character creation back on my World of choice and I have the time to log in, I can't. Now the severs are down for maintenance. Yeah!

Now it's Friday, I have time once again to try and get in game. Oh, the world I need isn't listed again. They once again seem to have locked character creation on the world I was in during beta.

So, it is now Friday mid-afternoon and I still haven't played a minute of the game. Fun, fun!

You don't "HAVE" to play on the same Server. It's only if you wanted to keep the same FFXIV Open Beta Character name, then you must play on the exact same server.

But you can still play on a different server and make a new character there if you don't care about your OB Character Name.

Why didn't you just create a character on another world to at least look around a little if you wanted to stay on the same server as in OB?  Your names still would be saved on the OB named server.  Actually because characters require a first & last name the odds are you could use the same name on a different server unless it is a really common name combo.  Also, FYI,  you can add as many characters as you want on the Account Management page and play them for free for the free 30 days.  But you need to be sure you delete any you don't want to pay for before the free period ends.

Don't ask me why SE refuses to use the same modern technology that countless other MMOs have employed to generate super fast update downloads + background downloads.  If the game is still in the same location as it was for the OB and CB, then read the following for faster downloads (taken from http://forumplanet.gamespy.com/fileplanet_program_announcements/b67434/20362591/p50/?740):

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    **GUIDE FOR FASTER DOWNLOAD!**

Basically, FFXIV uses standard torrents for their patches.  So you can compmletely bypass the FFXIV download manager by using a  torrent sharing program like Utorrent, BitTorrent, or Azereus/Vuse instead.

Step #1- Go to C:UsersYour User NameDocumentsMy GamesFINAL FANTASY XIV Beta Versiondownloadsffxiv-betad96437e6metainfo (Alternativly just click My Documents then My Games, after that folllow the names in the address above.)

Step #2 - In this folder you will find all patches that have yet to be downloaded, in torrent format. With Utorrent it shows them as torrents and you just need to double click them.

You should see files that look something like H2010.08.10.2000 (This is the main game file 3.56GB) or D2010.08.10.2001 (This is a patch to update the version 4.66mb).

EDIT:I also found a third torrent file but it appears to be an old patch. It is labeled Version H2010.08.04.2000 (5.09mb) This file is the first one the Updator downloads when it starts, so if you havent downloaded this, go ahead and do so.

    NOTE

*Once they have finished downloading remove the old ffxiv-beta folder from above and replace it with the one downloaded from the torrents.

**Whenever you start the FFXIV updater after completing this process, it will install the patch.   If another  new patch is available, it will repopulate the torrent list in the same folder.  Find it, and repeat the same process.  If it's just a very small patch, you can choose to just use the FFXIV downloader, unless of course it's so bad that it doesn't download at all :(

Thanks for the tip. I didn't know you could create other characters without beign charged, as long as you delete them before the end of 30 days.

Still though, it would be nice to play the character I intend to play long-term

I realize that I could most likely create a character with the same name on another server, but I also have friends on the one I'm intending to play on.

Thanks. This should probably be stickied. That would have been a great help to me and I most likely would have been able to get into the game by now, had I known that on Wednesday.

Because that would have been too easy.

not sure if that fully explains it

You can use the same character name on a new server without transfering.  Im doing it.  Not sure how it works if you want to play on the same server with the same toon name.  Is that the only reason you would have to transfer?  Are Open Beta names somehow "held" until the tester claims it?  Are the names ever released?

I believe the names are being "held" yes. Basically a small advantage from being in the Open Beta, in that your name is saved so no one else can take it once you buy the game and create your new character (with the same name). I like it personally, I'd hate it if someone else stole my character name or something :P
