Trying to decide if i should come back

RekindleRekindle Member UncommonPosts: 1,206

I have a few characters , a couple accounts and have been on again and off again with Eve since 2004.

I'm a big space nut in general. I  enjoy cosmology and the idea of star travel is cool. Also the idea of a sci-fi mmo vs all the fantasy settings is cool.

However, i find myself playing eve for a few months and then leaving again and again.  The last time I left is because I felt that despite all of the advertised options, everything takes money to get.  If you want the cool t2 cruisers or bs then you need lots of isk to buy and fit them (especially if you loose a ship or 10 along the way).

I don't have time to sit on a head set all night (nor do i wish to!).  I find that CCPs utter lack of interest in the mining profession is quite annoying.  Yes : the mining game is boring and repetitive but only because CCP has avoided doing anything whatsoever with it.  Last I checked mineral prices were in the toliet and CCP seemed to like it this way leaving the idea of mining minerals to sell them about as profitable as gathering rusty axes in EQ1.

I'm pretty care bear I guess and I find myself time and time again running lvl4 s to make the isk I need to get into some better ships.   But its a carrot on a stick that I don't often reach.

Anyway, I guess I'm wondering if I should give it a try again and see if I can carve myself out a little fun piece or if i should just leave it alone and acknowledge that Eve is not the space game I want it to be nor is CCP a company who shares my priorities in a gaming experience.

On that topic, CCP seems to be taking a lot of heat lately and I too am wondering if they've lost something that they had when they first started with this.

I've always had this on again off again love affair with Eve.   It always draws me in with it beautiful eyecandy and massive star systems, but I always seem to end up on the opposite end of the galaxy, staring at my ship as I mine for hours at a time, boring myself to death.

I suppose this game really is what you make of it.

Awnser her siren call again if you want, and I'm sure noone will complain or blame you.

Personally, i'm waiting for Black Prophecy to open up in November.  I've heard good things.

I've also been on/off with EVE 3 times now.  Each time it lasts a few months or so.

I've done mining, missions, hauling, and some PVP when my corp was setting up those.. thingies around the planets.  (Sorry, it's been over a year, can't recall the name).

Mining is plain old boring so I joined a corp that did low-sec mining ops.  That was a little more fun.. we were attacked a couple times but mostly by griefers who would come and go.. at far range and such.  Mostly, it was just mining.. with people to chat with... nothing more.

Then I did missions... that was horrible.  They were almost all alike and you could always use the same 2-3 tactics to finish the missions.  It was bland.. boring... without depth.. no story... and as you did the harder missions.. it was just the same thing except you needed a couple corp-mates to help out.  That's it... like a big empty room with guys on the other end holding guns, and you have guns.. in the big empty room.

Next, I tried hauling.  Hauling was OK.  I had eventually aquired enough ISK to buy a BIG hauling ship.  But man.. it was sooooooo slow and only good in low sec-space.  I eventually trained up and was able to do the cloaking ship with a small cargo area.  I did some low sec stuff, jumping through gates while getting shot at.  I'd sit cloaked and listen to conversations between the guys guarding gates/stations and such.  I was quick and researched all the tips/tricks.  My name got around and soon enough I had hauling contracts up and down.. even had a group of pirates who liked me so much they trusted me with their stuff.  They would send me shopping in high-sec space for all the ships/parts/guns and shit they used to pod kill people.  THen they would escort me through low sec space to their station.  I'd get paid insane ammounts of ISK and anytime I had trouble I could count on them to help me out.  It was probably the most fun I had in the game.. hauling stuff was easy to do AFK while in high sec, and exciting in low-sec.  I had a variety of hauling ships for a variety of different situations.

Finally, my hauling skills get me into a descent corp and they would have me haul fuels and such to... I think they were... not stations.. but.. you know.. those things you setup near planets.. that need fuel.. that have turrets and such.    That got me into PVP more since we HAD to go through a gate that was being heavily camped.  I didn't have much skill but in a group I could take a few out before going down.  It was exciting, angering, and entertaining.  It was a combo of PVP and my Hauling services.  The corp even let me move everyones stuff with my big hauler once.. that was cool.  I couldn't believe they trusted me with so much stuff.  Was nice.

The thing is.. for me... I always LOVE the idea of EVE.. the sandbox.. the endless amount of space.. the ideas are there but when I put them to the test... I feel... bored... I don't know.  I guess I do love some elements of the theme-park games.  Like Mass Effect 1/2. the story is great.. imaginitive.. drama.. love.. having tasks/goals that offer a variety of missions with back stories and such.  I think EVE is what you make of it.  If you find your place in EVE.. if you find something you love in EVE.. then you have to work on it or it gets boring.  I dunno... I'm just not ready to come back to EVE again.

After reading this post i want to come back more then ever lol.. I played EvE for about 4-5 months and then quit when i got war dec'd and was forced into sitting in a station for a week.. Eventually i found a new MMO to play during that week and never looked back on EvE.. But now, now i really have this craveing to get back into the game! lol.. Today i jus all the sudden got interested in EvE again.. I've sampled a lot more MMO's since then and have really gotten a feel for the p2p and f2p market.. None offers me the freedom, risk, or excitement as EvE..

Only thing that's really makeing me iffy is the fact that i know that it'll be another 4-6 months till i can afford anything that'll do any good in pvp.. Maybe i'll join a pirate corp this time to show me the ropes, idk! :)

I just came back to the game!!!

It seems like a fairly common thread for players of EVE to play for a while, give it up and come back again a few times at least.

I say if you're hearing the siren call of the game again, go for it. Sub for 1 month and see if you want more by the end of it. Even if you only get a week's worth of fun out of it, that's a pretty good deal for what is it... $14.95? Cheaper than a movie with some popcorn.

    Current: None
Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN

Of the games that draw me back, EVE tends to be the one I play the longest during the sub period.  I've gone back to WoW to play for a week, back to CoX to play for a couple of days.  EVE, I normally play at least a few weeks if not ending up with a second month there.

I am fighting the urge pretty well this time though.  Just where the game is...well...I do not know about coming back now.

Heck, CoX is drawing me back more - but that is probably because I'm watching No Ordinary Family.  I usually go back to EVE when there is some space show on TV or a movie, lol.

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

A friend once described EVE Online as a boring game with moments of intense and satisfying action. And he's right, the game in general is slow and about asset and resource managment. We invest so much time building isk with no real ultimate goal.

Even now I'm training skills and have nothing to do but run missions. I can haul, mine, scan. etc.. but pvp is allot of risk for just cash reward. Great cash, for what? Sometimes you need PVE to just give you goals, to give you a race to pit your skills against. With some shiny trophy to carry around and show off that you participated and won.

I love TF2, but I'm the same way. I play, get bored of the repetition and stop. That's why PVE holds my interest so much more if it's done well.

EVE needs more shiney trophies to show off, more things to explore and discover and maybe some more pve bad-guys for us carevbares to drool over fighting one day.
