Ive been playing since CBT having lots of fun its a pretty unique game. you dont have to grind and lots of quests and exploration to do.
Oh! and if you have any questions feel free to ask

Unfortunately I have tried the game, and it's nothing more but a cheesy "Asian" version of POTBS. Now, I don't necesarrily mean that in a negative way. However, I don't particularly like the sound of little chimes & pings when I'm switching between skills to use from my boat. All the glittery affects are also pretty cheesy and offputting for a genre like this.
Just sayin....

Having a different opinion must mean you're a troll.
Well im keeping an open mind since i never played POTBS Ill look into it but I would like to keep the discussion focused on UWO.
No thanks. The sound effects and music alone made me want to run screaming from the room. My 5 year old was attracted to it though. O.o
Hmmm yeah the music was a bit to classical and reminded me of pirates of the caribbean and the FX sounted like a Japanese console RPG but Im Enjoying the gameplay its kinda unique and fun
Well, there's no "grind", but there IS some pretty brutal transportation distances at times, which depending on your definition, could easily fit that description. And the learning curve can definitely be a little steep, especially if you don't have prior experience with any age-of-sail type games. Definitely a strong focus on non-combat activities, for better or worse.
Me personally, I'm enjoying it too. But this definitely isn't a game you get into for instant action.

I agree completely the learning curve takes time the 2hr tutorial hardly scratched the basics of the game and I felt like a country bumpkin at the start of the game. But slowly I learned just from playing which then I noticed I was really Immersed into it so yeah it’s something good and bad at the same time Traveling does get tiring at time but hey it’s an RPG and a pirate one at that so I expected it at least it’s not boring and makes proper use of the traveling mechanics since a lot of thing can happen or be done while traveling and not just simply staring at your ship all day I’m also happy with the choices of combat and non combat activates that are equally as important in the game because when you think MMORPG nowadays it’s all combat
I was going to try it it keeps trying to install some application everytime I visit the site. Like I need more spyware crap on my computer.
Its not spyware its something like a private e mail thingy for the netmarble members. I had the same problem using fire fox and windows 7 I cleared the browsing history it worked or you can try chrome too
I am going to try it,i actually enjoyed playing the console version of the game back many years ago.
I don't care about grind or long travel or steep learning curve,i just enjoy a good game.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
yeah I enjoyed the SNES version too infact im planning to play it all over again its sad that we dont get the newer versions like the one the PSP just got recently
The browser pluggin thing just crashes every time I tried to run it, so no, I didn't try uncharted waters
I tried downloading whatever that thing was that they require just to let you get the game but it crashed every time. FF, IE8, doesn't matter. Uninstalled their crap, cleaned out my registry... pass.
Just use a launcher like a normal game please. Don't force me to download a messenger I'll never use and don't want.
Never argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level, then beat you with experience.
Hmmm yeah I guess people are having trouble with that annoying launcher I hope they fix it soon it seems to turn the interested gamers away well can’t blame them since its still beta and netmarble relatively are new I just hope they do something about it soon
Oh BTW the music is by Yoko Kanno one of the best music composers for video games
I have been thinking about looking at it as I usually love any game that people mention taking a high learning curve.
But getting pressures to go in other directions so we'll see if I ever manage to get around to UWO or not, glad you are enjoying it
Whatever it is, it's annoying and I do not want it on my PC.
BTW, why is it that when I try to open your profile, I always get an error? Yet, it works perfectly for everyone else's profile. Maybe I'm paranoid but I have a feeling that you have a vested interest in this game.
I guess I must be young at heart then because I like it , there is alot to do and learn and have yet to get bored with it so.
In other words, you didn't play the game long enough to understand it. They're very different games.
"I was going to try it it keeps trying to install some application everytime I visit the site. Like I need more spyware crap on my computer."
It's not spyware, but I won't disagree with the other half of your description.
"The browser pluggin thing just crashes every time I tried to run it, so no, I didn't try uncharted waters"
Yeah, it's buggy. If you're running Windows 7 or Vista, then close your browser, relaunch it in XP service pack 3 compatibility mode, and then update the browser plugin and it will probably work. You only have to use XP compatibility mode to update it, and can then run the browser as normal afterwards.
It's a firefox thing as someone already mentioned, try use IE. TBH i couldnt be bothered with the pluggin thing, unless you want to make some posts to their board.
I think UWO comes out first before POTBS. Can anyone confirm?
I have been looking at it, but not tried it yet . i played this
and it was the best sea game there was .. was hoping it would be close.. will try it soon
POTBS is already out, been out for a bit its a subscription mmo hosted by SOE/station, you can go there and do a 14 day free trial and plenty of cheap boxes on ebay.I just started the trial- sure it has more bells and whistles but its a subscription based game thats too be expected. It is mostly a pvp game from what I hear.I still like UWO tho graphics are not bad and its free cant beat that with a stick.
I wish there was more customization in choosing your character. For example, each country should have its own unique style (skin tone, hair, etc). I'm also not a fan of the anime looking characters (I prefer the more gritty/rugged stylization). And to some its not a big deal, but I hate the fact that everyone looks exactly the same. Still, nothing I'll quit a game over.
Another thing I dislike is the ship combat. When I get hit with cannons I want it to be shown on my ship. Holes, cuts/broken sails (there is cuts in the sails I noticed but it's too simple). I guess something sort of like Empire or Napoleon: Total War sailing. I also really liked PotBS combat.
But my main complaint about the game and most likely the reason for me not to continue playing is the item mall. I hate item mall games. I like paying $15 a month because that $15 will give me all that I need - I only rely on my schedule and dedication. If it's an item mall game I'll end up paying $30 if I don't know what I'm doing by purchasing stuff that I don't need. And what happens if I get really addicted and want to experience everything? I'll end up paying more a month than that of a typical subscription based MMO. Though I'm not sure how the item mall in this game is going to work out.
And what's really going to hurt the game is not having a proper chat. When I first started playing I didn't see anyone talking because the school chat was full. Hopefully that'll be fixed.
All in all it's a great game and I had a lot of fun. I loved how massive it is and how much there is for you to do with your character. As of right now I can't give reviews or my full opinion of the game as I honestly don't know what you do in this game.
You know, that argument has been recycled for every F2P MMO out there and it's getting stale lol. If you cant resist buying anything from the CS, that's your faults not the game. Also your argument is self-contradictingf, you want to play on your schedule? That's F2P for ya, on subs model if you dont play you basically giving free money to the dev...
As for their CS, i'll just wait them to be released before commenting.
I think you mistook what I meant . What I meant was that in said game it would take me a couple weeks to clear dungeons to get ascended. Where as in an item mall game you would have to purchase those dungeons and also have to spend a couple weeks to clear it to be ascended. I have no issues with my schedule. I guess it was poor wording on my part (hey, it was way past my bedtime ).
I think the asian version of UWO may predate POTBS by a year or two, although the two games are really quite a bit different in feel. Much greater emphasis on combat in POTBS, both in pace and tactics.
