Look at going F2P like this

delete5230delete5230 Member EpicPosts: 7,081

Why do Casino's like people to come and gamble ?

Answer :  Because the odds are against the gambler, and for the house.

Why don't mmo's that are going F2P just lower their sub price from $14.99 to  $ 5.99 ?

Answer :  Because the odds are against the player, and for the house.

YOU WILL NOT SAVE MONEY with a game that had gone F2P, if that was their intention, the monthly sub would be lowered.

There is nothing good about f2p. So no, I won't look at it like that. Its just spin doctoring.

Turbine F2P is a good f2p. SOE needs some work but still monthly subs will slowly fade away.

SOE's F2P model is really a glorified trial at discounted cost. You don't need to buy the game or pay a full sub in order to have restricted access, but if you do decide you like the game it will cost you more than a normal sub to open up less than the normal  game, and even then not all classes will be playable. How crazy is that?

In my view they should either have bitten the bullet and gone for a proper F2P model - which Smed is clearly desperate to do but he knew it would cost him 95% of the present playerbase -  or else run a much more extensive free trial on the existing servers. Most importantly, they should also have stopped pissing off the existing players with constant unwanted and unneeded core changes to the game as without the continued loyalty of the existing players and the word of mouth they spread the game really does have no long-term future.

Of course, there are plenty who would argue with good cause that it's only by SOE getting rid of Smed himself that any of their games will really increase their market share to the level appropriate to  the quality of the development work they represent. It's always been the poor quality of the decisions taken by the grey suits and the duplicity involved in those decisions that have held SOE's games back, not the quality of the games themselves.

Monthly subs will never fade away, it is how American consumers work in regards to many expenses. TV, phone, satellite radio, car lease/loan, electricity, gas, etc etc et.

People are used to paying for things monthly. People will also realize F2P rips them off and go start realizing that subs were a good value and that $15 a month shouldn't bother them. Plenty of adults don't care about $15 a month.

That's nonsense; it give you a choice about how much of your money you want to spend instead of sticking you with a fee each month, regardless of how much you use it. Turbine's version of f2p is particularly nice as you can go for the monthly sub if you play a lot and revert back to f2p if you decide to take a break and only play occasionally.

That's because Turbine f2p, isn't really f2p.  It's a (great) alternative pricing structure, and let's you decide what you want to buy.  They just call it f2p to pull in the suckers, but in a smart way where people can enjoy the game and want to pay.

SOE...uses the f2p term to get you in there, then tries to frustrate you into paying using game mechanics.  If it works for them, great, but I'm glad I read all the conditions before trying it.

    Agreed...

Though I do think that even though Turbine's hybrid model is certainly not meant to be 100% free, you still get a heck of a lot for nothing...Plus you get to experience the Game with Vets on established Servers. I don't think you can underestimate the value there...image

Totally agree. After GW2 launches I can see company's leaning towards a sub less model and just release paid expansions every few months. I also believe many company's will start adopting Turbine system. They have the subs still but  they give you the option for a f2p system.

Turbines f2p version doesn't totally screw their vets, unlike EQ2.
