Virus or unwanted program 'BDS/Tofsee.36444 [backdoor]'

detected in file 'C:UsersjooceAppDataLocalTempwdb$battleground$coliseum$bg_coliseum_6v6_002.wdb.exe.

Action performed: Deny access

Trying to install their dumbass game. After I blocked the access the install froze my computer and errors started popping up. I've always been hesitant to try free games, this is a good reminder why.

For the record I dled using their installer from the official website.

I downloaded and played this game about 6 months ago.  There were no problems.

This game is has  many features and players, and a lot of content.  It is a legitimate game.

I am not currently playing and have no idea what specifically happened to your software.

  • madeuxmadeux Member Posts: 1,786

Sometimes games do things that an antivirus program can mistake for being nefarious.  Lots of software request that you turn off antivirum during installation for this exact reason.

The game is fine, and it's kinda fun.  Turn off your antiviru, install it, then turn it back on.

There is NO VIRUS in this software.

I have never had a problem with this game in the 18+ months I played it.......I am pretty sure the development team will help find out what happened, they can be very helpful

Many Anti-Virus programs have a report feature where you can submit a possible false positive and let them check it out. Also, make sure your AV is updated. They may have already found the issue and corrected it. That said, I've never had an virus alert from RoM.

just redownloaded the game and I had no issues at all.

I can tell that was a virus 100%. But why would it be hidden inside an MMO game's files. That's very interesting. Try to get support so you can tell them what happened.

    So uh, actually, no...

    ...guessing you have Avira, eh?

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

I find it ironic that it was a backdoor virus since they just announced the gay marriage option in the game.

  • fnorgbyfnorgby Member Posts: 158

I'd be interested to hear how you're "100%" positive it's a virus... since myself and 1000's of other people have played the game with somewhere around exactly zero virus problems.  I suppose that something could have intercepted packets during the download and slipstreamed a virus in.  It's not impossible.

Or, it could be one of the exact kinds of false positives that overzealous security products throw all the time.  What the OP described sounds like Kaspersky... I love Kasp. but mang it throws a lot of false +++'s

Lol yeah that is kind of funny, but you got a couple posts about this marriage thing, you really don't like gay's I see..

Though just like to say (like everyone else here) just about every mmo can cause false positives, depends on how good your antivirus is, free ones like avg always cause issues during installation and patching.

It's really not a fault with the game, but instead it's with your cheap antivirus.

I've used the free version of AVG for years and I've never, not once, had a problem with AVG during the installation of games, inluding RoM.  The problem the OP had may indeed be caused by the AV, but don't blame AVG.

So I decided to turn off my antivirus to see if that was the problem. Immediately after install, my computer is trying to install some bogus AV program. Long story short, it got infected pretty badly with trojans and key loggers. I wasn't doing anything else on the web - I was gearing up to watch the world cup finals. I've spent this entire time cleaning it up... and watching this great game.

So again, Download this at your own risk.

Got bored of the game, but definitely no virus issues.

  • Shooter-90Shooter-90 Member Posts: 100

No virus here, I even redownloaded the game and checked it before and after install. Nothing. I'm guessing your AV's a false positive or you just simply  a person who can read up on a virus that has already been addressed by the current community.

I would suggest next time reading further before placing falsified claims accusing something you don't know much about.

    Have a nice day!

I'm curious where you downloaded the game from.  As I just downloaded it from the official RoM website and ran Kaspersky, Norton, SuperAntispyware, Malwarebytes, and HitmanPro on the extracted installation directory without any viruses detected.

So whatever infected your computer, wasn't RoM.

Edit:  By the way the Tofsee trojan is a spam mail relay that also lowers the security on Internet Explorer.  From Microsoft's Malware Protection Center Encyclopedia entry on the infection:

"The malware's primary purpose is to act as a spam and traffic relay. It functions as an HTTP proxy, using its backdoor functionality to receive commands that may order it to generate and send e-mail."

In other words, it would not try to install bogus AV programs, keyloggers, or anything else.  It doesn't have that type of functionality.

Agreed, likely from some random site not listed officially?

That could be a possiblity, but it's far more likely that it was just a false positive from Avira and his computer was already infected, or became infected for a different reason.

Well I figured out my random RoM crash problem....

Sounds like he should download legitimately from the official site. Maybe allow the program to start and hope all these players are right.

Well, one could say Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing was also a legitimate game... ;)

So I was watching a video on youtube for Top 10 f2p MMORPGS and I saw in the discussion about other people having the same issues with trojans and such that I did.

Apparently, it's the main downloader that's really risky. If you use the 2nd option (the 2 direct downloads), you'll be fine. I tried this and everything worked out great. Just a fyi.

  • RomanjisanRomanjisan Member Posts: 53

Many games will try to offer a peer-to-peer option for downloading their games using such services as offered by Akamai, among others.  I try to avoid these types of downloads like the plague because of the high likelihood of viral infection.  Just use the direct download links from the main website whenever possible and you should be fine.

I dont think anyone mentioned AVG. . Avira yes. . AVG no. . unless they removed it or I can't read. . which is possible.

The virus was most likely in your browser. Some viruses have the bad habit of infecting legitimate .exe's, much like normal (biological) virusus do. So it wasn't a false positive, but it wasn't RoM's fault. And in case you're wondering, you can even get viruses from ads these days, so no matter what you do, there's always a chance to get them.

You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up.
