Not to mention if XIV follows same pricing as XI, US version will cost 12,99$ fee... which is around 3 dollars less than normal subscription fee for MMO's.
So you can have an alt for the normal price if you want. Win/win.

This is wonderful news. I love sticking it to the console fanboys.
Serious death penalties makes every close call an adrenaline rush, and every minor achievement a major victory. This alternative rule-set should be in all MMORPGs.
AFAIK the only difference between the races is what you look like. You should be able to pick the city you call home and can go to any other city in the world and do all the same things everyone else is doing. And as others have said one toon can be max level in every class and every crafting so there isn't much of a point to alts.
I would guess that they looked at what people were doing with FFXI and they adjusted their payment model to fit more with what people were actually doing in a very similar system to what FFXIV will be. Most players have 1 character that they play/level and an alt or two that they use to store or sell items.
And to be honest this prompts people play one character and act responsibly with that character but doesn't actually force them to only play the one character. I've always liked the one character per server idea (like many recent "hardcore" MMOs have gone with) because it forces people to be accountable for their own actions.
P.S. Awesome. Glad its coming out so soon. I just need to make it until the end of September!
How the hell would you know if people want alts or not for christ sakes!!!!
This is true, because many people are likely to base the classes they choose for a character based on the race, and whether it seems suiting to them. So they would have a galkan warrior, taru mage, etc. (i refuse to call them anything else)
In a way though, it's just as vain.
I thought every race was equal this time
Doesn't change the fact some people won't be able to see their Mithra as anything other than a thief/mage/etc.
Yes, you can do it all on one, but some people just have an issue of wanting to play a warrior while looking at their puny taru. I'd think it was funny, but others might hate it.

Why would they sell something tha people wont need? There must be some reason why you would want alts or no one would pay $3/month for them.
You need to have alts? Do you need a candy bar at the store or need cable TV? Are you saying that anything for sale is something everyone needs?
I guess you're operating under the assumption that SE is just being greedy money whores and this is a way to show a lower monthly sub price while really getting everyone to pay extra because they'll need 16 alts. All I can say is look at the people trying to explain why that assumption is wrong. FFXI is a very similar character system (in that you don't really need alts) so look at it and see what people use their alts for. (I'd guess most are only for the same things the retainable characters will be for)
Also I don't expect FFXIV will be like WoW or other recent MMOs where you can max level in any class in a week or two. Rolling an alt to level up wont be a main feature like it has become for some of these other games.
It maybe be delayed for ps3 but if i buy the pc version then ill be able to use for the ps3 version later as u can use 1 account for both systems.
is this 100% accurate? I really want this game for ps3 but I wouldn't mind buying the pc version until the ps3 version launches.... Just wouldnt want to have to re-buy the game.

Not 100% accurate but that's what SE has said in the past and that's how XI worked too.

You're missing a point here: How will you play on PS3 without an original game disc?
I don't like FF series in general, but honestly, boredom from current mmo's and getting just 1 character slot each account might persuade me to try it.
Wow.. I'm a little shocked actually.. They arn't going to have a very long Beta and that concerns me..
When the game has released they've had 6 months time to work on Beta. Just because the testers played Alpha version doesn't mean SE hasn't been working on Beta for longer than that.

Wow so there must be little to no story then if you are expected to be able to "see it all" from one race's perspective. I know next to nothing about it and it already sounds like a huge grindfest.

Yeah, I feel the same way. Square Enix seems to be really losing their magic. What's up with all these bad decisions? FF13 was the most linear game they've ever released under the FF banner and I thought that was a wasted effort. FF14 doesn't look all that great either... I hope they surprise us with something great, which is basically impossible nowadays.

The stories are not race specific. You make no sense.

I didn't see that coming. After the benchmark test I am looking forward to playing, though it does mean I don't need to worry about getting a PS3 to play this and DC online until march.

Wooooooooooooooooo WOoooooooooooooooooooooo !
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
FFXIV! You Ready?
Possibly, making having alts even more pointless.

Yea I know, that didnt answer my question.

If WoW = The Beatles
and WAR = Led Zeppelin
Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

Some people might want to play more then one race
Most people won't need them.
Some people like to RP with multiple characters I guess.

So where is the official announcment link for all this news....nothing has been posted on any Square-Enix site that I've found yet!?
JP main site has it all.
Ah silly me, hadn't checked there yet...love the new painting BG......so pretty!

Lol they had a similar system in FFXI, but I still think it's retarded..That's SE for you though.
You're missing a point here: How will you play on PS3 without an original game disc?
Wow.. I'm a little shocked actually.. They arn't going to have a very long Beta and that concerns me..
You know what's retarded?
That a player can't play every class on one character.
Or that some classes are locked from certain races.
Talk about retarded.

I'm a 1 character person in any MMO (except EVE).
