New to game why the hate?

WyrdsoulWyrdsoul Member UncommonPosts: 26

I've just started the game and can't see what all the hate is about!

I'm finding it fun and involving. I've tried lot of mmo's and this is 1 of the better launch or  just launched titles I've come across.

Whilst only new it seems to have a broad amount of things to do.

So just thought I'd post this after reading al the negative threads, glad they didn't put me of trying this game.

I have a life time sub and haven't touch the game in at least the last 2 months.

Some of the hate for this game is completely understandable... some of it is not.

    Anyway...

The game is shallow, with little depth or challange, and overly repetitive.

Space combat is fun, but even it gets old.

    Ground Combat is just awful.

Ok.  I'll  be the paranoid one today.. I find this post suspect considering the account was just made today.

I would play the game for 60 days and then come back and give your opinion.  When you write it, keep in mind that it is not a F2P.

why make post on subjects where you seem to have little understanding. You say yourself that you just started the game.

When I first played it was fun and engaging.

Come back after you have played some more, and if you still like it then fine.

But everyone that hates it, has valid points!

Played WOW (5 years), AOC, AO, EQ2,AC2, Horizons, Saga of Ryzom, SWG, CO, STO(Beta),ROM, Allods, and many other F2P titles. Asl been in beta for many of the main titles and played countless SP games. I have been gaming for 15+ years!

Well it's good to see some replys. Yes I've just started the game and yes I've just joined this site. Still have found little or no bugs and so far game runs smoothly. I've played and paid  for alot worse in the realms of pay to play. But perhaps I'll recant after more game time, though I hope not it's fun and that's what I'm after.

as some others have stated and as you'll see if you actually read alot of the reviews of the game and not just criticism space combat is quite fun the missions are more engaging than not but once the novelty of Star Trek wears off  the game begins to drop far and fast.  The fact is there are not many things to do you can kill things and gather mats for a half baked crafting system and I suspect inside of a month you may start to see that too.

Having a cash shop that they develop so often for doesn't help when coupled with the fact that the game is rather shallow as is.  Honestly I can say if Cryptic adopted Turbines F2P model on DDO this game would be fine but it's an insult to ask for fifteen dollars a month for this on top of extra for Cryptic points to make purchases in the C-Store (which is something else you get automatically with a sub to ddo).

Funny seconds after posting here I decided to check and see what was going on on the STO site and of course the first thing to splash across my page is the C-Store mega update.  This game simply is not worth anywhere near what they ask for it.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

To be fair, the OP has just as much right to post as you.  Why do you make posts when you have nothing interesting to say?

  • SilverdaggerSilverdagger Member UncommonPosts: 119

Not to bash the OP, but this topic has been re-hashed so many times that the OP just comes off as a troll.  The fact that you seek instant answers and want to drag us through the mud yet again says a lot.  Read through the 2nd stickied thread "General 'STO is disatisfactory' thread".

As others have said.  Immerse yourself in the game, explore every parsect and once you've banged your head on the xp caps a few times....come back and post your review.  At that point you will not have to ask, "why all the hate", you will know why.

I am in the same boat. I only login to update the files after a new update. Season 2 in mid July will bring me back to try some of the new content and features. But it will still be awhile until there is enough content to keep players wanting to login.

Well, to be honest if I'd banged my head against the level cap like the above poster said, I'd have no complaints about the game. To me, if I do stick with an MMO to reach the level cap, it's money well spent. 3+ year commitments to MMOs seems more and more to be a thing of the past, I'm OK with making use of just the full first free month! :)

So, yeah, that didn't happen for me here. The space combat felt so repetitive after a while that I fizzled out pretty much in the mid levels. I remember the first few levels being solid arcadey fun, but without any depth to the world and the ground combat and crafting system feeling especially uninspired, it did not work for me.

If you do make it to the level cap without getting bored, good for you, have fun!

Is there really lots to do? No, not really. I found this game fun for a few hours, but after the novelty of flying a Star Trek ship around and shooting stuff wore off I found that there was absolutely nothing to do.

Most of the missions are either exploration missions or patrol missions. That means they are all cookie cutter missions where you do the same thing over and over again. The regular real missions seem sparse, and even they have an element of predictability, namely go there, kill those ships, beam down and kill those guys, etc. There is nothing to explore, you can't go to any planets except when you have a mission there. Always wanted to walk around Starfleet Academy or visit Bajor? Forget it, those places don't exist in the game. The game doesn't feel very much like Star Trek. There are a few bones thrown our way, like a few canon starships, but other than that almost everything in the game was created by Cryptic. You aren't playing Star Trek Online, you're playing Cryptic's Space Battles Online.

And those are just a few of my complaints. I got a few hours of fun out of the game, but it gets really tedious really quickly.

I Played the game during beta and decided to hold off on buying it.. which i did last Monday.

Im enjoying it so far.. have probably 40 hours of gameplay since then ..

I can see the repetitive nature can be a turnoff but its still not enough to stop me, i am finding new things in the game that i enjoy since the last time, and i want to see how the next update helps it even more.  Sure this is coming from like a week of play not the months some have put in, but i see it giving me my moneys worth especially if the new updates hit with some more missions, kinda looking a little sparce right now.

I sure hope its the same for you OP.

    I jumped... I cried.

I got promoted to a Klingon Lieutenant playing as Federation.

I went to read logs of what I had done and needed to do... to find most of the text missing.

All in all, it felt like a game in early beta... which pretty much ties in with what many folks have said, ever since Atari bought them out - their games have come off as rushed and appear to be unfinished products at release.

Another six months or so and STO could have been a pretty damn fine game.

CO on the other hand is a crime against the Hero System and Champions...

Alot of the hate stems from one thing. The feeling that it could have been so much better. To me the game seems lazy. Having played Champions Online the similiarity between the two games graphically bothers me. The game looks good dont get me wrong but imo the style does not fit Star Trek. Thats just me nitpicking though. Like I was saying many think they game could have or should have been better and it would be if it were not for Cryptic an mmo mill at this point, seeing as that they have another mmo already in the works. My biggest gripe with STO is that it is not the scope that a game with such source material, should have. Having only one side in the conflict is a complete joke and deprives the game of a meaningul PvP aspect. This shows how lazy Cryptic is. In CO there was also one side and barely no PvP worth mentioning and people complained so the devs have learned nothing in the time between the two games. Going back to the scope of the game it feels tiny, confined. I have never played a space themed game where the UNIVERSE felt so small. Thats a shame becouse once you get into it the space combat is actually quite nice and alot better than the afterthought that are the on foot missions. These feel even less like Star Trek. I dont know maybe its just me and my expectations of something more than another comabt oriented mmo, but to me the game is a disapointment and I understand why some, who are probobly bigger fans of the show than me, would spew hate when talking about the game.

Somebody mentioned the diplomacy factor that was missing and the exploration factor that was missing - Star Trek, Starfleet, the UFP, etc - was not this.  None of the series nor movies was this.  As bad as some of the TNG movies were, they were not this.  This is not Star Trek.

Which kind of goes with CO not being Champions...

If they had perhaps just made a "space" themed game (or a superheroes based game), then they would not have received the amount of hate... can definitely see that.

LOL @ all the conspiracy theorists in this thread. Why must the OP be anything then what they are? "I bought the game and am having fun, why all the hate?" translates to me as "I bought the game and am having fun, why does everyone hate it?". Not everyone feels like digging through every hate filled thread in this community to find the nuggets of honest commentsfeedback or are hittng the refresh hotkey to jump on the next post.

I preordered and so did the headstart (didn't do much beta due to lack of time) and managed 3 weeks after launch until I didn't want to play anymore, I believe I got to Cmdr 7 and I was only playing a couple of hours a day.

As others have said, the game is reptative - space combat is either circle the enemy keeping your good sheilds towards him then point your torpedo launchers in his direction and fire when he loses shields or continuous straffing runs if you have an escort. Ground combat is just shoot everything mindlessly with no tactics. The so called 'Exploration' was not what I'd call exploration as you fly from anomoly to anomoly and have the same type of randomly generated encounter with the appropriate alien race depending on what sector you are in. Crafting was pointless and not very well explained (unless it has changed since launch)

Give yourself a month then come back and tell us what you think.

@op - Gald you're having fun so far. I hope it turns out to be your cup of tea. If you enjoy it, more power to you. As stated by previous posters alot of the REAL HARDCORE hate comes from the die-hard trek fans. It's just not star trek. Many of the best episodes in TNG had little to no combat involved. The federation was founded as an ongoing exploration coalition, with peaceful exploration, contact, and scientific advancement in mind. NONE of that exists in STO.

It's very shallow, repetitive, and almost a pure game engine clone of CO.  At launch it was horribly unfinished and many feature the community had been screaming for were completely ignored. Many still are.  In short, I found it somewhat fun for the firt 3 days. After that it was just god-awful-repetitve.

The ground combat might be the worst implementation of 3rd person combat I have ever witnessed. The lack of full x,y,z enviorents in space were another major tactical screwover in many fans opinions as well. It was rushed out nearly 3 years faster than a standard MMO dev cycle and is run by 2 of the biggest idiots in MMO gaming with numerous subpar failures under their belt.  The only thing cryptic has ever done well was City of Heroes and that was almost 7 years ago. Since then they have the Un-Midas touch. Everything they touch turns to shit.

I will personally never buy a cryptic game again, they are just a revolving door mmo company now.  Rumor is they now have  D&D franchise to work with. If they screw that up as well, then god help them, because no one else ever will be able to.

I digress. Enjoy the game, I'm sure we would all be interested in seeing how you feel 30-45 days from now, but until then, cheers, and enjoy your game.

I pre-ordered and got the special 6-month deal on Champions.  Of course needless to say, I got burned on that deal.  This allowed me early access into beta of STO.  The gameplay was extremely repetitive, much like Champions.  The crafting was really shallow, just like Champions.  To me, they keep using this failed cookie cutter design to develope their games.  I, for one, will never purchase another Cryptic half-arsed game.  It's just not worth the box cost and 15 bucks a month.

Wait until you unlock your klingon and have nothing to do but the same old explore thing while you wait for 30 minutes to get into a pVP match.

Wait until you try crafting and find you have to buy components since you can not farm them and then once you build something you find that the loot drops are better than anything you can craft so you eventually stop crafting.

Wait until you hit RA and have nothing to do but dailys and task forces over and over again.

Wait until you try to decide what upgrade to use, deflectors or deflector dish, and then try to find official cryptic documentation to guide you.

Wait until you spec for one thing and then it gets nerfed and you have to pay real money to change your specs which has happened several times now since launch.

    Just you wait...

Mostly, because this is MMORPG.com, where the only games you're allowed to like are those which have not been released (ideally, those with no information released whatsoever, because the first actual, solid, fact is invariably proof the game is a WoW clone -- "It runs on computers, just like WoW! Where's the creativity, man?"), those which have been running for more than 10 years (but only as they were for a week or two after release, then they nerfed everything and started pandering to the little WoW babies even though WoW was still 5 years away 'cause they have time machines, man!), or those with populations of less than 50,000 ("Because most people are just stupid and lame and don't understand how being fragged and ass-raped while they're still trying to pick out their character's hairstyle is what makes a game really meaningful!"). EVE may be the one weird exception, a genuinely good game that it seems socially acceptable on MMORPG.com to like. (Though, oddly, 99% of those who want "real PVP with consequences" don't seem to actually be playing the one major, well run, solid, well maintained, expanding, game which OFFERS exactly that. Funny.)

The problem is that an awful lot of MMORPGs do really suck, and that even the best games have areas of valid criticism which could be very useful to know about. However, it's very hard to pull out legitimate complaints and intelligent critique from the vast morass of "I'm gonna show you all how cool I am by hating things other people like!" posts.[1])

My opinion? STO is very likely not for me. I'm a Star Trek fan from way back, from before the first movie, when it was all reruns on Channel 11 in the New York region. But the things I like best about Star Trek -- story and character -- seem to have been deliberately tossed aside in the game, in favor of pewpewpew lasers and ships that fly like X-Wings, not battlecruisers. Having not played it, it may be a good enough GAME, but based on the company's own design goals and feature lists, it's not a very "Star Trek" like game, and why play in a licensed universe if it doesn't feel like you're in the TV show/movie/novel/whatever? "Star Trek" is about exploring strange new worlds and bonking green babes. If the game doesn't have a button on the action bar labelled "Seduce Hot Alien Chick With Lumpy Forehead", it's not Star Trek.

[1]And, of course, once you've staked out your position, never, ever, change it, no matter if the facts you allegedly based your opinion on change. ("I refuse to play Generic Fantasy Clone 15 because they have Dwarf Wizards! That's stupid! Dwarf Wizards suck!" "Hey, man, they dropped them six months before release." "I'm not going to play any game made by those filthy liars who promise Dwarf Wizards and then don't deliver! They lied about Dwarf Wizards, I'm never going to forgive them for that!")
