Crosshair 3 wireless support?

Gimme_HGimme_H Member Posts: 9

Hi,

just finished my first build, it's all gone well so far, thanks in part to the advice I've got on this forum, but I'm having trouble setting up a wireless network adapter.

Does anyone know if the Crosshair 3 has a device included? Am I not finding the right drivers? Do I need to install something else?

I assume you're referring to the motherboard from Asus, and the answer is no, it does not have a built-in wireless adapter (only an ethernet port). Of course, it's a small complaint given how awesome of a motherboard it is.

Okay, thanks, do you know is it easy and cheap enough to install one?

You can easily buy a PCI one that goes internally for ~20$ and it's unbelievably easy to install. Or you can buy a USB one that's even easier, about ~20$ for a cheap one and 50$ for one with 802.11b/g/N support.

    Newegg has these....

    Rosewill PCI (internal) - 14.99 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833166021

    Belkin G USB (external) - 19.99 (in cart) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833314011

2 Higher end N USB adapters I would probably opt for -

    Rosewill max 300Mbps data rates (WPA(2) Security + AES, 64, 128 WEP Protocols) - 29.99 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833166025

    Trendnet max 150Mbps with similar security protocols, only very discrete/hidden - 32.56 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833156268

Normally, I'd recommend going for a PCI card due to the fact that most USB dongles tend to overheat in my experience, but the Crosshair III's one real weakness is a lack of available PCI slots, especially if you're running a CrossfireX setup (because the sound riser then takes yet another slot).
