I was really looking forward to this game when it first came out as I played COX in the past and quite enjoyed it. I played CO for about 3 months after launch but found myself very bored with the game. Pretty much only solo missions, no super teams/guilds, and quit.

As there is a severe lack of good MMO's out there right now, I'm curious if it's worth coming back to this game. I heard it's dying, and I heard it's rebounding. What is the final verdict?

1. Is the game worth coming back to? Why or why not?

2. Is the population dying? Is the game dying?

Noble and true, you are the hero other heroes aspire to be. You are a natural leader, selfless and kind, who will put the lives of others above your own, and are steadfast in your pursuit of justice.

The population was dieing, but since Revelation and the recent melee patches its been turning around quite significantly.  At the moment it still seems to be growing.  The SG I'm a member of has been seeing a good influx of new members, most of which are new players, who are also remaining active.   It is however still a niche mmo.

They've added quite a bit since November last year, hence the level gaps are no more and its a lot more polished and more flexible when it comes to builds.

As there is a demo, I suggest anyone tries that first before buying.  Even if they have played before and are just wondering about returning.  No game can be everyones cup of tea, so its always best to get a feel for things first hand if one can.

I just resubed recently after quiting a couple months post launch and I am very happy to be back. There is really solid population, very helpful and chatty. I have no trouble finding groups for the games new instances that ive been checking out (which are very fun might I add). They've added a bunch of team content and a few big endgame dungeons since launch if you're into group content. They also filled up all the leveling content gaps and there is a whole new area in the game with another set to come out this month. 2 new power sets and a lot of balencing has happened too, melee got buffed up enough so it can readily compete with ranged powersets.

Been trying this game for a week now. I've been in the beta back then but never found the will to actually buy the game at release.

I must admit that I'm having a lot of fun with the game. Been creating several different heroes and I find them all interesting to play. The community is pretty helpful and most willing to team up even for regular missions.

I'll definitly buy the game after my trial is over.. Worth at least the 20$ from Steam.

I came back a few months ago after quitting a couple of months after launch, and I'm back for the forseeable future.

The game is much improved, with balancing passes, new QOL features (including some great teaming-related features) and new content, and with many more to come.  There's a new lead designer (no more Bill Roper) and much more interaction between developers and players. And, as others have said, the population is increasing (although still way down on launch) and there seems to be a much more upbeat feeling in the game than there was in winter.

My main criticisms are that content is still lacking, although Cryptic are working on this by releasing Adventure Packs which sound very much like the old TFs from CoH (first on is out later this month), and that once you know how to make a survivable character the game is pretty easy. They do have a "difficulty slider" system in the works so hopefully that'll help add more challenge to the game.  If it doesn't I'm sure there'll be another rebalancing pass to nudge up the challenge.

TL;DR - Drop a month's sub on it and see what you think. I reckon you'll like what you see.

Hmm im the same boat, as usual i end up playing mmo betas and a few months after release and quit due to the usual "bugs" "not enough content" "not balanced" etc.

I always come back to a game that i have quit after a few good months, sometimes they change for the good, sometimes not. After reading these posts i think i might resub and see how i go!

    Thanks guys!

Well im a lifer and i havent logged on since like march, and before then the community just kept getting smaller and smaller to the point where tier 2 pvp was the only thing mainly going on around the clock. No one plays the volcano tier 4 pvp map because gear, power, and true level issues.

It's also not that friendly to people who are not invested in it on hours on end (Pass on a strategy guide unless it keeps getting updates becuase the mechanics of the game shift so much one thing today might not be true the nextday), because just jumping in you could easily make a character that on paper seems kool but doesnt stack up to others. When i first got this game i made 5 concept characters and since then i only have 2 and they arent even concepts they are my mains with powers mixed from different sets that deal damge and keep me alive(Reg can be very squishy if you dont know how to use it).

The new content brought some of my old friends back and made things a little lively but it didnt take more than a week after all of the content was ripped threw for them and the numbers to drop. I really passsed this thread a couple of times saying to myslef just mind your business, but then i thought i would have wanted to read this and then made a decision if i still wanted to play. Belive me the content is there, its just not in abundance or even up to the standards of shorter low-budget mmo's.

The serpent lantern is a move in the right direction but if after its offically released it takes another 3-5 moths for another adventure pack to be released why bother, I already read on another mmo site that the adventure pack last only a few hours any way.

The game seems to of muched improved in the last 2 months. This game always had more potential to improve than STO.My concern would be whether the content additions will slow to a drip soon now that Cryptic is gearing up to rush out it's next MMO in a year, just like what happened between CO launch and STO launch.

No doubt it's improved i suppose but i guarantee that the numbers are still low, its exactly what you and i both said the content needs to be there and it needs to keep coming at a good pace, because if not then the numbers will just remain the same. I know im making the numbers my case but i do so with reason.

    Examples:

    1. A member (And a few other's) started counting all of the instances, zone by zone when the game was going threw the whole expansion paid fiasco, and the number never went above 5000.

    2. The developers said before launch 10,000 would be BREAKING EVEN.

    3. During the last Q&A a player asked about super bases and his answer was
I'm sorry to say that we don't have the time or resources to get Supergroup bases in properly right now. We're focusing on the Adventure Packs, quality of life features, and bugs for the time being.
And becuase of this answers in that same Q&A  they responded to a question about the noticible grind they responded
In the abstract, because some people enjoy doing that kind of thing. Some players like to have some crazy goals, even if they are waaaay out there. The top-end perks and other long-term "grindy" things are for people who want those kinds of targets. By and large, we only put cosmetic/prestige things out there (though we have made mistakes). One man's tedious grind is another man's relaxing rinse-and-repeat.
I know he was being honest but when you have to say things like i dont know. WE dont have any time, money and we are making you go threw the same content because of these things, well you be the judge. And finallyThe elimination of technical /account support via telephone for CO. What next no website?

They don't have time to focus on bases, as they are working on other things (for CO).  The majority of people who want them are ex-CoH players, which is quite ironic as being one myself I know they were hardly used.  Adventure packs are being targeted for quarterly release.   That's amongst other additions in between.  As for the duration of the adventure packs, its not simply a few hours.  A single run yes, but to get everything is a different matter.  They are basically dungeons, aka task forces like in CoH.

As for their new MMO affecting things.  Devs where only reallocated to STO for a brief period, prior to its launch to meet contractual deadlines.  Since then it has not affected CO.  In fact at the moment its visble CO is actually getting the higher level of attention, which has also been increasing.

While still not a hugely popular MMO population is up since March.  The melee patch and word spreading that its improved greatly seems to have done the job.

On a slight aside, quoting calculated instance numbers from a few months ago doesn't give a representation of what its at now.  Plus there would be a considerable margin for error, based upon mission and lair instances not being visible.  CO got a bad name due to its launch state, wich they have yet to recover from.  So yes, CO was struggling and with Revelation originally going to have a fee it increased the impacted.  However since then they've done a very good job of turning it around, making it much more appealing and polished.  To an extent that its rare to see people who are play complaining anymore.  As others have said the scene and the community is a lot more positive.

Nobody has provided actual information on what there is to do when you hit the level cap, besides PvP.

I'll be honest.  My subscription expired after the first month and I haven't looked back at Champions until now.  I had a level-capped character with nothing to do for two weeks.  I may as well list the content and request feedback on what has changed, improved, or replaced with something better, based on what I remember of the game.

    1. UNITY missions.  Pick up a few each day.  Complete them then do a final mission and get UNITY currency.  You could spend this currency on items, but you would have to grind UNTIY missions every day for a month just to buy one item that wasn't really that great.

    2. Crafting.  It got fixed quickly so you couldn't put certain stats on certain parts of items.  This contributed to making a defensive tank build almost impossible to do, and at the same time made crafting items almost pointless.

    3. Content.  You hit 40.  There's nothing left but UNITY missions.  Go do those or quit the game.

    4. Nemesis.  While fun to beat up, you couldn't get another one after putting your 3rd one in jail.  There was also almost no point to doing the missions.  The nemesis tokens didn't earn anything useful to improve your character.

    5. Builds and respecs.  They nerfed a lot and buffed a few things during that first month.  People were scrambling to figure out what to do.  I got lucky and had a few crafted uber-items just before they changed crafting, so my build wasn't ruined.  Is it easier to respec if I don't like some of the changes they've made?  Is there still a variety of useful builds?  Did they make most powers useful, in some way?

The main objective of unity missions is not the unity merits, but the unity intelligence which is the currency that allow you to get the dungeon missions which are the ones you want to get and complete to get a lot unity merit to get your gear. Think about unity missions as a version of wow dailies and not as the actual end game. The endgame in CO are the dungeons:

    Andrith

    Nemesis Confrontation

    Mandragalore

    Therakiel Temple

    2. Crafting.  It got fixed quickly so you couldn't put certain stats on certain parts of items.  This contributed to making a defensive tank build almost impossible to do, and at the same time made crafting items almost pointless.

I kind of agree with you but the things are not that difficult that those changes prevents you to do anything including dungeons, not sure about the new hardmodes, we'll see.

I agree with you that crafting needs a little observation from devs, most things are easy but almost useless, and the interesting things gets pretty grindy: Crafted travel powers, crafted action figures, crafted costume unlocks

    3. Content.  You hit 40.  There's nothing left but UNITY missions.  Go do those or quit the game.

Completely false. You have currently 4 dungeons for pve, especially Therakiel Temple is pretty nice with original designs and more than obvious bosses.

    4. Nemesis.  While fun to beat up, you couldn't get another one after putting your 3rd one in jail.  There was also almost no point to doing the missions.  The nemesis tokens didn't earn anything useful to improve your character.

Are you really playing this game? nemesis tokens is the cheapest way to improve your character at 40. However, I agree with you that they need to update the nemesis system( I have 15 nemesis in my main), the missions get a bit boring, but you have to admit that some of them are pretty cool. It has been said that in Serpent Lantern nemesis has some participation in the story but I don't have details or even confirmation.

Most mmos have periodical changes which are more often at early stages. I think overall the changes have been positive like melee, creating to frameworks from Supernatural, Might revision. As usual some powers get buff other nerf.

No, I'm not currently playing this game.  The point of the thread and this post is to find out how it has changed.  I stated that I have not played since the first month.  So, do they break out of jail or do you run out of nemesis slots after a while still and get left with nothing to do?

Nemesis Confrontation is faster and probably more fun that Andrith and Madragalore. Therakiel Temple is definitely improvement in lairs, with interesting bosses, and there you cannot zerg bosses, once you die you can't enter again until boss die or reset after team wipe, more in line with wow heroic dungeons.

About gear rewards, the new unity 2 system gives you better gear but it takes long long time. However, this game same as CoH are not heavy on gear as a way of achievement

Sorry, I didn't notice you were de OP, I didn't mean to criticize you, just expressing surprise since nemesis tokens had helped me to pregear my main and alts. I haven't run out of nemesis slots yet, after putting a nemesis in jail you have the choice of making a new one or playing any of your former nemesis. As I said, Nemesis system needs a revamp from cryptic, it has been said that the revamp will happen, unfortunately it is on the to-do list.
