I've played many private servers, and used to play back in OPEN BETA (long time ago).
How is the game now? Can I easily pick it up? I remember taking 2 weeks to hit level 20. I know it's sped up...but how n00b friendly is it and what's the best server to start on that has a large English population. I do NOT want to have to deal with anyone from BR.

Most BR's are on private servers nowadays. I heard Phoenix is the way to go, but I haven't been playing for months.
im a returning person to l2 after not playing a while i started up on phoenix. can get buffs to 75 from npc. use common cheap cheap gear all the way to s grade. there was ways to get high level easy now. adena is harder to come by in lower levels because the game is so far progressed. mainly 80+ items for sale in giran
hope that helps.
Don't play this game. It is full of bots and RMT'ers. There is also virtually no community because most people bot and there are only limited number of people playing (approx 400 - 800 per server). It is also very hard to play solo. NCSoft also do not care about the community. They dont update their website, no events and no customer care. If you are looking for a new game to play I would probably suggest to play D&D online, LOTR, Perfect World, Allods, AoC, Karos Online to name a few. Just stay away from any NCSoft game and you will same yourself time and sanity.
Last time I played (a couple years ago), I think I made it to lvl 30 before I actually found a real person.
Found lots and lots of KSing bots though.

The game is far more new player friendly than it was on release.
I played pretty hard core when I first started and made it to 20 in a week. Now you should be able to do that in a day or two.
Take the new player buffs and funny enough, actually do the quests offered. They upped the quest xp in the towns to propel you out of there fast as possible.
You can also get tickets for weapons and there are common weapons now that don't cost an arm and a leg. You can get B grade items at the luxury shop in Giran.
There is still a harder grind at the top levels but you will be able to get to B grade relatively easy. There is also a sort of rest experience that comes in handy if you haven't played a day or two.
go to phoenix server.
