A warning and a cry out of help

Hey guys and girls,

When lotro was launched i tried it for a while and loved it. I was also playing wow at that time and after a while because of a time issue i just had to pick one. I went on with wow at that time but serieusly hate that game now. I also tried several other games and still play War and Aion.

Installed the game, updated the game etc. So this morning i made a good cup of coffee and wanted to start playing.

Char creating screen.. no problems what so ever. Picked myself a nice elf hunter... and there we go.

loading....loading...loading...loading... allllot of loading and in the end Black screen and you are disconnected.

Right, lets jump the forums in search for an awnser. Seams lots of folks experienced this problem over the years.

Ah, a troubleshooting guide, lets see. Do this do that, it aint our fault its your isp blabla. Tried everything and here i am , with a cold cup of coffee and wondering what is going on. I played WoW with no problems. I sometimes play War and Aion with 0 problems. I also played AoC without problems.. and now this stuff happends. At the moment i am thinking screw it /remove game. On the other hand i wanna give it a good try again.

So for new people, you may run into this problem.

For those who dont, i hate you! no just joking. If people manage to find a solution outside the ow so usefull tips by CM (pft) let me know!

I would send in a customer service ticket. I think the game is worth it (besides my criticisms). I've had odd issues over my time with the game but never anything like you describe.

I played lotro at launch with a group of buddies of mine and we all loved it.  Myself and one of my friends had the exact same problem, but for the life of me its been so long ago i cannot remember the workaround.  I will look on the lotro site and see if anything spurs my lousy memory.  If i can find a solution i'll repost it here.  good luck.

Did you get any "connection attempt failed"?

An update error occurred: A connection attempt failed. Patch error: A connection attempt failed. (0x80041003)

If you are receiving this message, the LOTRO servers may be down. Please check your LOTRO LAUNCHER or the LOTRO Forums for any service updates.

If all LOTRO servers are up, please ensure that your firewall has lotroclient.exe and turbinelauncher.exe listed as exceptions and enabled to access the internet from your computer.

If they already are, you may need to refresh the firewall settings. Do this by removing both files from the exceptions list, rebooting the computer, and re-adding both files to the exceptions list.

NOTE: If you play using Vista and are experiencing problems with LOTRO, please make sure you have Vista Service Pack 1.

    or

Connection failed: There was an error with this connection

For the latest video card drivers, find the manufacturer of your video card and go to their web site where you can download the latest drivers.

Two files will need to be permitted within firewall software for DDO and LOTRO.

    The two files are:

    DDO dndclient.exe and dndlauncher.exe.

    LOTRO lotroclient.exe and lotrolauncher.exe

Both of the files need to have full permission in the firewall to access the servers. After a patch you may be required to remove and re-enter both files from your firewall approved programs list. For assistance with configuring your software firewall, please contact the manufacturer. We have listed some of the major software firewall providers below for your convenience.

    Zone Alarm:

    Norton/Symantec

    McAfee

    http://www.mcafee.com/

    Windows Service Pack 2 Firewall

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/default.mspx

If you still receive this error message, please make sure that you have Internet Explorer in ONLINE mode, as LOTRO and DDO requires it. If you are using other web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, etc), you will still need to have Internet Explorer set to ONLINE.

This error can be caused by many things. The most common being DirectX not being updated to the latest version which is 9.0c and your video card driver not being updated to the latest version. Make sure you have the latest version of DirectX installed; you can download the latest version from Microsoft's web site.

Try the troubleshooting option in Options and set the network speed to the highest setting or put it on auto.

Cheers for the reply's so far.

Everything is going fine, i can log into char screen etc. its just when i select my char and enter middle earth it stops. Loading screen is up for several minutes and then i get a *lost connection to the server message*.

So far i tried most things CM says, like changing my firewall settings and stuff. I also turned it off even like my virusscanner.

The also talk about forwarding ports. I looked at a link they gave but my router doesnt support forwarding so they say i have to contact my ISP about it according to CM. FOr the info i got a modem supplied by my ISP but because it aitn wireless i had to hook up a wireless router. Not for me but for my gf...

No other game gives me problems, but lotro does.

At the moment i feel like Frodo towards the end of his journey....

Out of curiosity (and I don't know if this has anything to do with it) you aren't running with Nvidia's new drivers are you?

    Update.

I didnt know what i did, think nothing, but all of a sudden i could log in.

Played the first part of the game ( where you meet elrond etc. ) then after completing it again a loading screen and the same connection issue kicked in.

Then i tried to log into lotro again and i coudnt connect 20/20 attempts. Time out. I give it a few more goes else i gonna throw this game out of the window....

    Another update.

Just adding info here incase someone encounterd the same problems.

I noticed the problem  has to do with my router. The D-Link DI-524UP.  When i connect my pc to the modem from my ISP i have 0 problems. There aint much info about how to configure the router only to activate an option called DMZ but i aint formiliar with this setting so i find it a bit tricky to just do things.

If i find a awnser i post it here.

Routers have a firewall built in, some are pickier than others, some are a pain with only certain games. My Netgear gave me a pain on AoC for example but  all routers have configuration utilities for such instances. What you need to do is configure it for LoTRO and ensure ports 2900-2910, 9000-9010 are open for Lotro.

here is  a review of your router

    www.speedguide.net/read_reviews.php

and here is the router setup screen you need to go to

    www.speedguide.net/showpic.php

I think everyone on a network has experienced this at one time or another so no biggie

Not sure if it's the same problem, but mine will often crash when it first tries to load past the server screen.  I'm pretty sure it occurs when Windows 7 tries to turn Aero graphics off, and maybe doesn't shut it down in time.  Your problem may be related.

As for the long loading time, that may be normal.  Mine takes a long time too, despite being a 1 year old machine, but it doesn't crash.  This longer load time started happening when Seige of Mirkwood released.

Think i did read some stuff about windows 7 and lotro problems / errors. Dont have the links right away, but will take a look later.

The loading screen ( when crashing ) was just doing nothing for 4/5 min then bam , crash.

Now it kinda loads in a matter of seconds, maybe 10 sec tops. But thats ofc just for the starting area's.

I give you props for looking into the issue, and trying some genuine troubleshooting.  It's refreshing to see on these forums.

So, congrats on working to figure this out instead of raging on the forums.

    Ok few things here.

Generally black screens in lotro during loading is caused by it getting hung as it tries to connect to the server. Your firewall/antivirus/whateveryouarerunning will block the connection and you will get stuck at a black screen. Now the advice to disable these programs is silly as 90% of them will continue to run in your task manager even if you tell it to stop. This is normally done incase it is something malicious attempting to kill your anti virus. Generally you need to add exceptions for the .exe of the client as well as any .exe for the patchers. I know they changed around the file names since the last time I played, but you will need to add each one in order to get past this problem, especially if you are using something like Comodo.

Apologies to the OP and not meaning to derail but just out of curiosity are you using a Nvidia 260 or 280 card? I had that exact same loading crash till I went to the 196.21 drivers and that cured it for me. Before the 196.21 drivers I knew I was going to have to do 2 logins to get in game. The first login would kick me to desktop and I had to restart the game every time. 2nd login was always smooth as silk

A couple of things I have noticed performance wise. LoTRO uses right at 2gigs of memory when running in DX10 1600 x 1200 so to get the best performance you need to use a 64 bit op system and at least 4 gig of ram. Second best thing I ever did was get a small fast hard drive as a secondary drive and use it for nothing but game files. No hitching whatsoever now and my motherboard and processor and vid card are going on 3 years old now.

LotRO will also ocassionally have issues with certain USB Keyboards. Usually game wont even startup. Lighted keyboards and wireless are most usually the culprits...

Never had a issue with my G11 on this box, or the the other USB Logitech on my home office computer. In fact the only tech issue I have had with LoTRO since early beta was the double start issue. I tend to build solid rigs though and always use quality components.
