Unless you have specific requirements almost any of the Acer/Asus/whatever 22" or 23" 1080p monitors for ~$160 on newegg would work fine.

If you want an inexpensive IPS panel which has better color and viewing angle than a cheap TN panel the NEC MultiSync EA231WMi is around $300, 23" 1920x1080.

If you want a 120Hz monitor for gaming/3d you are pretty much limited to Samsung 2233RZ 22" 1680x1050 ~$300.

If you need a monitor with DisplayPort for Eyefinity the 2 cheapest options are ~$200 Dell P2310H 23" 1920x1080 or ~$300 NEC MultiSync EA231WMi..

Xbitlabs just put up an article fully detailing the differences between LCD monitors if you want to give it a look:

Also 1920x1200 do give a generally better experience for anything on PC but they are more expensive.

I recently bought a 23.6 inch 1080p monitor with speakers, and a HDMI input, so it can double as an HDTV for my PS3 or 360. I couldn't be happier with it. Here it is on Newegg www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx although I bought mine at my local Staples. As for the guy who said a 1920x1200 monitor is a better PC experience, it's all a matter of preference. I haven't run into a game yet that doesn't support 1080p (1920x1080) resolution, and I don't expect to because most games now are ported to or from a console. Another thing to consider is the fact that if you want to use your monitor for consoles, or HDTV. For consoles and HDTV viewing 1080p is the way to go because in some situations you may be stuck with squishing or stretching of the image on a 1920x1200 monitor because the aspect ratio is 16:10 which is a PC only aspect ratio, whereas 1920x1080 (1080p) is a 16:9 resolution which is the standard for all HD applications.

TLDR: A 1920x1080 resolution monitor is much more versatile, especially if it has HDMI input.

Oh yea, I almost added that for just gaming and movies 1920x1080 is perfect. 1920x1200 I meant, is just a bit better for general apps and such that you use on a PC, because the extra vertical always helps. Also a 1920x1200 will just letterbox to 1920x1080, no need to stretch the image and mess it up.
