The 20th installment in the Ask Cryptic series has been released. This latest entry focuses on skills in Star Trek Online.

Beyond the skill focused discussion, we also learned a bit about the games future, which will include a level cap upgrade and a new respec system:

Kosch25: Is the low cap which only allows 16 skillups at admiral rank intended to be there until level cap is raised in the future?

The level cap will be increased to Rear Admiral Grade 10 in a larger update later this year. Additionally, a new Respec system will be added. At that point you can earn more Skill Points and purchase and rearrange your skills.

    Wow, read that and still learned nothing about skills.  I did learn that there is no differance in the weapons except the effects are different.  Makes having a Tricobalt Torp mean I just spent more for the same damage.

    Don't get me wrong as I love some aspects of this game.  That Guardian of Forever mission caught me totally off guard.  But I have read thats kinda of a one time experiance in this game.

    Did anyone catch that MSN.com Game review on STO?  Ouch!

    um with some game items u need to Right click hit info and read them, some have special effects not listed in the general tool tip of said item/gear. Just like when breading tribbles you have to right click and hit info to see withc one have an hour long buff effect,and form what i have seen most of the ones that do are spotted or stripped in some way.

    I'd disagree with that. Just "reading" the efficiency skills doesn't tell you that they actually translate to point increases in the related skill with respect to ship power levels (Weapons, Aux, Shields, Engine) when they are preset at 50 to 25. Cryptic lived up to it's name when it came to detailing the skills list for player captain skills. Additionally, as was pointed out in the article, there really isn't a point other than style to taking the admiral level energy weapon or projectile weapons. That being the case I can see where people who put points in those would want to take them out and say, oh, max out an efficiency skill or two thatthey passed up earlier.

    Right now I haven't spent any points since making Rear Admiral and plan to only put points in Fleet Escort and take the remaining 3500 points and up my Engine or Aux  Efficiency. IF I'm still playing once they open up RA 6-10 then I'll use those points on a non ship weapon, non ground combat Admiral skill or two (Weapons Performance and maybe Hull repair).

    @AOCtester:

    I have no idea man, no idea, lol.

    STO's skill system is a convoluted piece of crap.  LOL.  Ok first, tooltips in this game suck.  I read many of them over and over and then  scratch my head and think to myself....what the hell does that mean.  Still don't really know what stats do.  I put points into things and don't know if I will get new skills or when I will get new skills.  I never put a single point into my characters ground game and yet I still am kicking butt in pve, which makes no sense.

    It's basically the worst thought out steaming pile I have come across in an mmo to date.  Sorry for the strong reaction. But if you suck this bad, just copy and paste WOW or any other game and it will be an improvement.

    I agree completely.  There's no rhyme or reason to the skill system at all.  It's virtually unintelligible.  Frankly though, I don't think it matters.  I never felt like I was getting strong when spending skill points.  The game is still a cake walk as you pointed out.
