I would love to see how NCSoft tries to spin this

No matter what these premium services offer the prices are pure bs. I really hope it is not true that the Korean version got event items for free, but if it is and NCSoft expects western gamers to pay for them then NCSoft deserves all the hate they have coming.

Er....if players in the west are willing to pay for them but the Korean gamers aren't, who's really the fool?

Agree...I no longer play Aion because...well...I hate grinding and during development and beta they said it was being westernized to save us a grind.  Wondering where the lack of grind is because that was all I did.  Should have learned my lesson with Lineage 2.

The "lack of grind" is those neat little things called quests.  They're really magical in that you can ignore your exp bar totally and then do nothing but quest,  straight up to 50.  The only problem is you can't be picky and ignore solo/spy/group/gathering quests.  You actually have to experience the majority of the content.  *gasp*

When these quests you're talking about are all pretty much the same, it's still a grind. Most MMOs have similar quests but at least some try to break up the monotony and make them a bit different. Not Aion. The whole game is straight up kill and delivery quests.

I don't really get what you mean, you can label every quest I've ever done in any MMORPG under kill/delivery quests.  That's an incredibly broad category...

Using random examples just from Aion:

    Kill 3 Elyos Generals.

Rift over to Elysea, make your way across the map over to this quest camp, and kill the elite quest-giver Mabangtah.

Enter the instance Steel Rake and kill these bosses.

Escort (deliver) this NPC to the hot springs.

Defeat the captain of the Dredgion.

Take this potion that extends your flight timer, and glide across the water utilizing the geysers to continually give you more height to make your way over to a pirate to kill him.

All of those can be described as a kill or delivery quest, but if you ask me?  That's pretty damn varied, and none of those play alike.  Even the same quest type in a different area is an entirely different experience.  Example: Replace Steel Rake with Draupnir Cave, or Adma Stronghold.

Yea but somehow, they still manage to feel boring and uninspired.

Afaik , Koreans had those packages also and had to pay for them , We also get Veteran rewards which do include some pretty decent things in time same as the Korean version.. also LOL @ those that think this game is a grind it takes about 30 days to max a character out if your hardcore and about 45-60 days normally ( thats not bad at all ) , Some people enjoy not being able to hit max level in less than a week , the ones that don't should stick to WoW.

they even give you 2x exp now .. they didn't have that before i capped out lol

I think comparing Aion to Lineage II is a bit retarded.

First and last Korean MMO i ever play.  I don't care if it has the prettiest gfx.  I won't be wasting my money.  I hate anime anyway.  It's ok to see bunnies once in a while around the lands as background.  But when you have to endlessly grind off them to get levels or use them as mounts, i have to draw the adult line there.  :)

To me Aion is Hello Kitty Online with broken PvP.

You're kidding right?   I played since it went live, and I don't remember one level pass 20+ that I didn't have to grind to finish off a level.  And I did the spy quests too.   Only got worse at higher levels.

Every mmo has some sort of a grind be it quest grinding or mob grinding.  I prefer to grind mobs in groups over a solofest quest grind any day.  Call me crazy but I've never had more fun in a MMO camped out somewhere with a group in FFXI.   But to be on topic if people are willing to pay for it the companies will charge them for it.

Lol, you do realise that the problem most people have with grind isn't the amount of time but the boredom? Aion could take two weeks to max for all I care, it would still be a grind because the method of getting to the level cap is the same thing the whole way through. Kill, kill, kill mindlessly until you cap... even with the quests that's all you're doing.

And to those that try to spin Aion's quests as being no different to any other MMO. All you do in Aion is kill and talk to NPCs, every other western MMO I've played has some interesting variations amongst all that to make things feel a bit less of a 'grind'.

It's not grind on the basis that you can max out within your first or second month. Lineage II does not offer that even closely. Also, what's the difference between running back and forth and just slaying monsters? It's still a time sink and you're getting the same thing experience and levels.

Just out of curiosity, care to elaborate?

LoTRO was about killing monsters, AoC was about killing monsters, EQII was about killing monsters, haven't played WoW but I'm pretty sure it's about killing monsters too.

Are you sure, that you're not disguising your dislike to the theme of the game and it's origin into something you think is more acceptable and sophisticated?

You'll have to forgive the person you quoted. I'm sure he just assumed we've all played video games since the commodore 64 and understand the underlying mechanic of killing monsters.

What he actually said (in the part you highlighted) was that most games hide the grindy nature better than Aion. Which is true. No one's denying that all games are a grind.

To use one of your examples: EQII offers a large variety of quests from standard ones to heritage, signature, lore ,and legend, 'forum' quests and so on.  Quests, sure but vastly different experiences. Whats more there are multiple zones at any given level that contains an offering of all types. Sick of grinding quests? The option of grouping up and killing monsters for xp is there but you do it in large, well developed and vastly itemized dungeons.

It's about offering people a choice of how to advance rather than leading people by the nose for a few quests and then abandoning you 2/3rds of your way to your level (if you're lucky). There's no choice at that point, you grind mobs or log out.

I myself have yet to find ANY mmo that offers extensive leveling any way other than kill grinding.  It just does not exist.  The biggest part of mmo games is combat, and in combat, you kill stuff.  Imagine that.

While not every level in every game I have played is gained this way, it is by and whole the primary means by which you will level your character.  I have played just about every big name, as well as a multitude of free to play and less known games, and my take on the grind whine is that it's just the way it is.  What else are you gonna do with swords and Bows and guns?

The biggest problem I have with Aion is of course, the bots and gold spammers.  But coming from asia, I sorta expected it.  It's been out since 2007 over there and there is just too much of a currency dependency in game for them to stop.  If maybe NCSoft took a look at how Warhammer Online deals with currency, then maybe they could fix the problem, thus fixing the game.
