$69,696.00 USD for a virtual item

Source:  Player Purchased a Virtual Egg for $69,696.00 USD

Can you believe that? A virtual Egg can be sold for a stunning $69,696.00 USD. It just happened in Planet Calypso, a MMOG that used to announce the sale of a Space Station for $330,000. Sequence of the Egg sale is as follow:

Jon "NEVERDIE" Jacobs held a public auction Sunday, inside Planet Calypso, and sold the Virtual Egg to David Storey aka Deathifier. Deathifier owns "Treasure Island" in the game, a tax generating Virtual World Destination. NEVERDIE purchased the Virtual Egg for $10,000 USD in 2006 from a gamer who completed a unique quest. The Final Chapter in the Egg's History has yet to be written as thousands of players speculate what will actually hatch from the it and if it will be worth the extraordinary price tag.

$330,000 for a virtual Space Station! $69,696.00 for a virtual Egg! Are they insane?

Please don't copy/paste crosspost stuff. None of that html works here.

As for the topic, this is somewhat old news, as the event itself is fairly new but the knowledge that Planet Calypso/Entropia is populated by retarded manchildren with too much money  is pretty well known at this point from past stupidity like this.

Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.

This is just sad in my opinion.  Just like the dude that would pay $800 for some spectral tiger in WoW because it is a nice mount to have.

Do not try to be a great gamer, just be a gamer. Cause, I don't care how good you are anyway.

That's just crazy. Then again, I guess I cannot really comment on how people can be willing to spend so much since I don't really know the whole story, but I can definitely say that I won't be spending that much money on something virtual.

    Jinn Gone Quiet (Guild Wars)
    Princess Pudding (Guild Wars)

People on these boards seem to think they're buying this items just for fun and wasting thousands of dollars.  What you don't seem to understand is that a lot of these things are investments.  The space station that was sold might have cost the buyer hundreds of thousands, but he generates revenue from it by renting out areas and hosting events.

It's probably not a bad investment.  Do a little research before posting, it's not just a bunch of rich kids wasting money.

Someone bought a nightclub a few years back for $100k. It's apparently doing extremely well, and is well on it's way to paying itself off.  At first the numbers looks absurd, but when you start looking at how much money these people make it's really just a new type of investment.

Maybe not, but that doesn't hinder everyone from still calling it "a rich kids playground" If you do not have money to invest you better stay clear away from Calypso.

What game is this exactly? Because I see it as a joke. If someone is paying that kind of insane money for virtual property or items, they have way to much money.

And to those who say it is an 'investment'. How so? Do you make virtual money that you can then turn into real life money?

I'm not flaming, i'm just lost in the sauce.

Yes you make real money by various means within the game.  Selling items, renting space, etc.

I don't think anyone in this thread has even played or read about Project Entropiaever.

I made a couple hundred bucks on there myself through hunting and only deposited about $50 (the cost of a new game)

I played back in the days , when the game was rather new..
Yes I made some cash aswell, but the thing is , I playd PE for FUN or rather as I play all my MMO's..
And if all you actually care about in this is to play a fun game like I did, you will get burnt by the very unforgiving and truly ignorant and rude community..

The game is all about money, everything costs money, so just forget about anyone stepping up and give a newcommer a gun or some clothes..They wont tell you anything, because it's all about money..They can't give up their secrets..Naturally ofcourse..

So I quit. sold all my stuff; I even had a gun that has been sold for like 1200 dollars (Or so I heard) nowadays..Back then I bought it for 1100 PED wich is more like 80 dollars.

lol just for shits and giggles I tried it out recently.

    Here's my experience:

In order to make some money, they give you a "sweat retractor"... so you're supposed to walk up to mobs in newbie land and milk sweat out of mobs using a non-damaging gun. This pisses the mobs off who will attack you and try to kill you. So you do the newbie run back to the guards (auto-turret). When you use this "gun" it has a chance to not work, but still aggro the mob. You can click twenty times at least trying to milk a mob before it works. When it does work, you and the mob need to stay still or the extraction process is interrupted. It takes about 5 seconds for it to complete, at which time you are rewarded with X bottles of sweat, where X usually equals 1-4 bottles.

The going price for the bottles of sweat are usually 4-5 PED (currency) per 1000 bottles of sweat.

    Is this good/bad? *shrugs*

The grind makes Everquest look like WoW.

Lots of people use this method to level up defence and dodge skills before they buy weapons and hunt in the game. You have to remember if they handed out money for free and made it easy then it would be just full of bots cashing in. And the people that did put money into the game would get little to no return because all the free users cashing in.

Always fools that have to much money and waste it on useless junk. Instead of spending it on some good couse like saving some animal or give to poor, they just spent it on something that they think rais there status or power or getting richer:(

    Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009.....

The only way Entropia exist until this day is becose of news like that.

TBH look at there web site or google it, there is nothing to say about the in game so you put smoke in ppl eyes lol.

Let me tell you about the reality (from player that know Project Entropia from day one).

The egg was looted in the feffoid event in 2005 (mayby 2006 memort failing me but I belive it was 2005) Never Die payd 100 000 PED’s for it (the guy who sold the egg) wasted all the money in crafting (feel bad for the guy) but that what Entropia is all about getting you money ?

The worst part is now we are in 2010 and after 5 YEARS the company who design the game MinDark did not come whith story line and what the egg do ? Kind tell you about the intend of that company to devlop the actual content (let me lol) as said before they only intend to make you spend more and faster (proof is the new tier upgrades) I must lol once more.

Ah the old entropia empty casino what else they will sell this year, cos is the only way they can get any publicity luring simple minded ppl who think they will one day become rich in video game (you will probably wake up homless at 60 wondering how you did to waist you life) xD

The day actually Entropia got something to publish about the game it self damn I will add it to mine signature.

PS. Don’t buy the Mercedes put the 60k in life insurance is min 4% per year grow and guarantyd money, do money compaound for next 20 years and buy it then whith the interests.

There is two kinds of players in EU, the rich who got no life and like to show up and the dreamers who dream to become rich ;)

Ok, Let me tell you a little about Entropia.. First off I have been playing this game off and on since 2006, I have deposited maybe $20 a month till 2009 when I stopped playing, sold all my stuff ,and cashed out for a mere $1300..Then after 5 months waiting on a deposit I only recieved $575 after Mindark withdrawal fees...

I love the game but forget trying to make money off it unless you already have thousands to spend and invest, cause if you are not making money for Mindark like John Neverdie Jacobs and a few others are, they could care less about you.. The egg is now owned by the second richest person in Entropia who i'd bet that he is actually one of the Developers or Game Masters, cause in order to own as much land as he does, you'd have to either start at the games conception or spend over $100,000 per year in the game..And after being in the Entropia Universe for a while I'm guessing that This is more likely a publicity stunt set forth by Mindark rather than an actual transaction, so don't believe the hype they are trying to feed you, cause Mindark Pulls these little stunts all the time especially in game..

I'm not bashing it as a game, cause it is fun to play, but What i'm getting at is Mindark will do anything to seperate people from their cash, as with any other business.. so my advice is Play the game if you think it is fun, But don't waste your money in Calypso expecting to make it back cause it's doubtful you will ever see a return on your investment unless you are a "High Roller" cause it's just Like Las Vegas, The House Always wins...

    Have Fun!
