Is the player housing all throughout the world or is it set apart and no one hardly goes there? What's it like?

player housing is in set areas zoned for housing (out of the way islands, plots out in the middle of nowhere, some of the more expensive ones are closer to civalization but they're all relatively close to teleport rifts).

There is very little social grouping outside of noobie towns from what I've seen back when I played (mostly Three Rivers)

Grouping in Old school mmo's: meeting someone at the bar and chatting, getting to know them before jumping into bed.  Current mmo's grouping: tinder.  swipe, hookup, hope you don't get herpes, never see them again.

Yea i was looking for the same thing when i tried Vanguard earlier...the world is gigantic but i felt very isolated . The social aspect is just not there. (and no social does not necissarily mean "grouping with 4 people"). Low population is not really an excuse either, i can see there's alot of players in the chat, you only need a 100 people in a town to make things social.

So imho, VG has a design flaw which is compounded by the huge world , splitting everyone up.

Then i got Star Wars Galaxies...night and day i tell you. In SWG you start in a town where players "naturally" pass through/socialise , so you will see vetarans and newbies alike in the same town going on with their business. It even looks like SWG is designed to have these central hubs, as i've found such a place on every planet.  SWG houses is actually all around the popular towns, or at least on-route to other towns and the quest hubs.

Now i haven't played VG very long, so i'm sure there is a "capital" city somewhere, but whether people of all levels are drawn to it  [Oggrimar is an example of such a town if you're Horde, i assume Goldshire is the Alliance equivalent] .

Alot might think nothing of this, but i'd say if VG had that when i started and seeing max level guys on their flying mounts or awesome armor would automatically encouraged me to continue playing. Now, you see nobody, or only other newbies and you just don't know if it's worth bothering.....

Each continent has a "capital" city, and also several other large cities. The problem is that the land is so vast, and the cities so large, that in no one place do you see lots of players. I normally do see players hanging around the crafting areas of the major cities, but there is no real "social scene" in any one place.

Just to add, it didnt used to be that way. In fact, there were massive social gathering spots.... problem is, that was when the game was young.

It didnt take players long to leave the game, and thus you see the barren wasteland that is Vanguard.

Vanguard needs a revival in the form of an expansion and new marketing pitch. Too many players left and didnt get to see the fixes made to the previously broken game. To make matters worse, the community was horrible, they kept calling vanguard "their game" and that everyone else who doesnt play like them should gtfo. They are part to blame for the tiny population.

Vanguard runs on the unreal engine, investing in upgrading the game to the next version of the engine with better graphics, adding a faction based pvp system with conquerable regions and you will have a great game.

Its a shame vanguard is going to waste, its got so much potential.

yes it does have potential, but it sounds like they aren't putting much effort into taking advantage of that.  We should all hate SOE, mainly because of the fact that the only game that could replace eq1 isn't going to get the attention it needs to get better.  I think the game died when Brad McQuaid sold it to SOE.  It is a horrible shame to see something with that much potential go to waste.  To make things worse, we may never see anything like it again.

Well to be fair, SOE also saved it. Remember Microsoft dropped vanguard like a hot potato for another project and at that point the game was going to be canceled entirely. SOE offered to save the project.

Sadly what followed was bull crap in part due to Brad McQuaid ruining the project after he had SOE save them and then furthermore screwed over Smedly after firing the ex EQ devs. So to be fair, SOE saved the game but at the same time due to Brad's douchery hurt the game and SOE didnt do anything about it at that point until after.

    LOL @ Goldshire

I'm sorry, but it's a sad thing when people consider Goldshire the "social area" for WoW.

Haha well it was at one point in WoW's history. A few months after launch everyone loved GoldShire for some reason. There were some fond memories of that place.

I'd say it's much more sad that Goldshire is most likely -still- more social today than anyplace in Vanguard. Maybe the OP was just trying to ask for a "reasonable" amount of social :). He could've asked for "Shattrath before WOTLK" , and we'd all have to say "No, not a chance, don't even think about it".

Actually there wasnt really that much socializing in goldshire.  Early on maybe, but after that just the cybors.  There were always more people in the capitals.

Poor guy... He has probably lost about a billion paws.

A big problem with Vanguard is that it isnt easy to create content for as the game was pretty much built on raw code. That means no dev tools to make content creation a breeze. That makes an expansion an impossibility with the current staff ( last I heard  they no longer had an artist but that was awhile ago ) and is also why new content is slow coming and rehashes.

It looked like the game was about to be revived when the trial first released but for some reason people didnt stay. My guess is that they were spread to thin after leaving the trial island. If they had put everyone in the same area then it may have been different.

Vanguard is definitely a good game and I remember fondly the first month of my gaming time. I made coin hand over fist selling weapons and harvesting tools and it was truly the first time I had fun crafting since UO. Now though.. There is no reason to craft anymore other than to keep yourself outfit and that leaves an empty feeling that cannot be filled.
