Well, the fans and readers of industry site Gamasutra have voted for their game of the decade, and their choice is simultaneously surprising and yet unsurprising. In a list that's full of single player games, the MMO that redefined MMOs has hit the top of the list: World of Warcraft.
Why was it chosen for the very, very hefty spot of game of the decade? Well, the readers have spoken on the final article, and it seems the list is almost as massive as the game. Everything from massive game design, to how it single-handedly changed how MMOs were played in the last 5 years, to how the game itself impacts a player's life. For those reasons and more, it's been voted in as the game of the decade.
For the full list of quotes from Gamasutra readers, and for the list of the top 12 games of the decade, check out Gamasutra.
Congratz blizzard, you deserve it :-)

Does not deserve it.
No MMO deserves that, really, there are far better games out there.
Where's Bioshock for example? Diablo 2?
But meh, after all, it's just another site.
there is no such thing as the best, its entirely subjective. What one person sees as the best, might only be 'alright' to another person. There is no denying that wow has changed how most mmos are designed, so it has certaily been the most influential MMO of the decade, and its undeniably the most popular in the west. Alot of people like it, it is the best to them, and thats all that matters. If you have another game that is the best for you, good, we shouldnt play things we dont like because other people do.
you just sound bitter that everyone isnt like you and doesnt like the things you like.
Here we go agian..
What about the fact that wow is the most award winning mmo ?
What about the fact that people line up 24 hours before a x-pack release, in lines with over 5000 people ?
I hereby predict that this thread will go downhill very fast.
So, I'll add some fuel of me own.
WoW is the only MMORPG to get it right in the past 10 years.
Well deserved accolade.
Playing: EVE, Final Fantasy 13, Uncharted 2, Need for Speed: Shift
Well it is, but do you really put it above all these great single player games we had this decade?
There are way too many great games out there to ignore them for an MMO.
If it was "Best MMO this decade" I'd support it, but "Game of the decade" is a little bit too much.

Yup, I really do.
Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed the balls off'f dozens of great single-player games in the last couple of years alone, but they don't have anywhere near the replayability or longevity of an MMO. From a simple "how many hours did I enjoy playing each game" perspective, WoW wins out drastically over any other game.
Playing: EVE, Final Fantasy 13, Uncharted 2, Need for Speed: Shift
How many votes did it get for game that "Ruined its genre"?
Well I have to give credit to Blizzard for creating a game that single-handedly destroyed the MMORPG genre and turned virtual world concept to linear, themepark, single player game set in a massive multiplayer world.
But hey, capitalism is what it is and there is no denying the 11+ million subscribers the game has. Even so it is a shame that the original MMORPG concept is now almost gone and all we get now are regurgigated WoW clones.

That wasnt a list of the 'best' games of the decade. Learn to read I guess. WoW is the game of the decade simply because it attained a scope never before seen in a computer game. Im sure more people played other games at any given time, but because of the nature of the game (MMORPG) I think this is well deserved, no matter what opinions you have on the quality of the game itself.
I agree with massively. IT's not WoW's fault that every other MMO company had to copy its gameplay... and that these games served as test labs for the expansions of WoW.
WoW is honestly a good game for the little it offers. Babysitting cute quests and dungeons. They're done really well.
Now we need the 3rd generation of MMO's. We need a world with multi-faceted activities(not just quests and dungeons for gear whores), realism, economy, politics, enormous plausibile worlds.
We'll see who does it best, between CCP's World of Darkness and Blizzard's new MMO. I believe these 2 games will sort of reinvent the standards. Hopefully this can be done only by considering MMO's as simulations, with A LOT of independent activities.
The game of the decade is deserved, because as great as some games were, they were forgotten after a month, Blizzard's online themepark occupied most of the decade. For me it's still a silly game that first claimed of being an MMO but delivered no end-game... because for me an MMO is still PvP. But somehow, even if it BETRATED the idea of MMO(simulation, PvP), not only its no end-game no PvP system thrived, but it EVEN made the old system of grinding to reach the paradise of PvP appear obsolete and stupid.

I will give credit where credit is due
WOW found a way to make a MMO very very easy, so easy infact a 5 year old can play it to max lvl (my freind son plays it and yes he is 5)
WOW = Everquest made easy or as i like to call it the Everquest clone.
And the only reason WOW wins awards is because of it popularity just like Everquest did back in the day.
Is wow a game for everyone? No some people like to use there brains, and not for just a Hat rack.
C'mon a mowhawk Grenade.
Please feel free to flame this i escpect nothing less cause Wow = The Easy Life.

Atleast YOU belive in the BS you just wrote.
Since I gave up single player games once I started playing MMO's I can't comment on their quality.
But I do agree that WOW is by far the most influential game of the decade, basically because of its longevity and huge number of subscribers.
Love it or hate it, look how many of us have at least tried it and as in my own case, enjoyed it for a while.
Look how many companies changed existing games or designed their new games to incorporate game play features that Blizzard perfected.
Can't swing a stick these days w/o finding the WOW interface in a new game, (yes, I know, AC2 invented it, but who bothered to play that game?) and now every new MMO is compared to WOW and we even have the term WOW-clone which probably will make it into Websters one day.
So sure, while I believe EVE is the better game overall, WOW deserves the title Game of the Decade.

I agree. WoW is accessibiliy and it tempts the masses with easy rewards and no pain at all, which incidentally is the definition of the Devil.
but when you say "game of the decade" you think about longevity, not actual value. So sadly this the decade of the Devil, and it deserves its title in infamy.

Well, after all it's just another site, it's not what the whole gaming world thinks about this.
I was pleased to see Shadow of the Colossus in there though, its just my favourite game of all time.
Diablo 2? HL2?
EVE

i cant see whats bad about a game that makes it easy for those who wants to be casual, and extreamly hard for those who wants a challange.
I still dont get why people insist on bashing WoW and the people who play it. I persoanlly dont like EvE but i still recognize how masterfully CCP put it together, I applaud the Fallen Earth devs for taking another stab at a classless system. Blizzard did something that gained them a ton of customers and a ton of money, they always do. The decisions that other developers/publishers make are solely the fault of those developers/publishers.
What was blizzard supose to do? Purposely make their game super hard and complicated so tons of people WOULDN'T want to play it?
Diablo 2? HL2?
sorry, edited... but no, Diablo 2 is close but not so important. Not to mention that the game itself is even worse than WoW.
I sort of agree on HL2, tho... it influenced a lot of gaming. It must have been a close call.
It's acceptable that in this case the bigger popularity gave WoW the edge.
