I just had an epiphany and finally figured out what "Copernicus' is going to be.
Curt Schilling bought the rights to Everquest next!
It makes sense if you look at the artwork and the team building the game. No wonder they are so secretive!
YAY!!!!!!

well, i really liked EQ1 but hated EQ2.. ... sounds like this could bear some more looking into!
I would hope that Schilling, MacFarlane, and Salvatore would produce something more special than just the next EQ.
Fingers crossed for a survival horror game.

I suppose Schilling would have the money if SOE would sell it, which is a big if.
I dunno that, if Salvatore actually writes the quests and plots we could get a good game with well written quests instead of the usual rat-hunt quests. Salvatore will write fantasy if I know anything about him. I myself still thinks they will place it in Salvatores own fantasy world however.
But I still have good news for you: one of the best MMO devs is working on something like that: Jeff Strain (Diablo, Warcraft 3, Guildwars 1 & 2) just started to working on a zombie MMO. There should be both enough horror and survival for your taste in that.

It's a good point, but 'zombie' does not definitely mean survival horror. Not to mention the damage the suits can do before release.

with the success of Left4dead, survival horror as an MMO.. er.. yes please

You know it wont be what you want, might as well start flaming it now.

I heard that George A Romero was working on a Dawn of the Dead type mmo. Would be great if he was in cohoots with Strain for sure.
His zombie movies would make a great basis for a survival horror MMO.

Not unlikely, Strain only said that he have collected a team of like-minded people with lots of experience. He also said he is making the game to be a B2P game instead of P2P or F2P.
I think this will be a fun game in 2014 or so. But we are getting a bit off topic here.
Last off topic from me i swear :P

Bah it's a console mmo
Back to 38 studios, i am really getting antsy to hear some solid info from them regardless.
If it is macfarland and sal's world and not norrath that is fine. I just want high quality with minimal broken garbage at launch.
One nice thing curt has going for him is he is a true fan of fantasy mmo's and will (hopefully) have the patience to get it done right the first time and we won't see another brad mcquaid cokefest disaster that was the launch of vanguard.

probably not that far off though, i mean, how much is really known about EQNext anyway.. it may not even exist!
Ugh.. I hope beyond hope Copernicus has nothing to do with survival horror. I've never been a "zombie" fan unless you're talking Rob Zombie's music.
With Curt's gaming background and Salvatore's creative history I expect a High or High-Dark Fantasy PvE game light on raiding and heavy on group questing with a damn good lore written for it. I see the game that EQ2 should have been or that Dungeons & Dragons Online should have been.

The only thing I heard about it is that it was something SOE is planning, probably for PS3.
I don't see Smed license that game, why kill the goose that lays golden eggs?
Salvatores own world also fits fine with what we seen from Copernicus so far, or maybe they got a license to make it into Forgotten realms, Salvatore has experience wit that world.
Part of me hopes Copernicus will include a massive world where it takes a while to travel. Sure, pear down some of the other time wasters in current mmo's but i always loved the scope and scale of eq1 travel back in the day.
I wonder when mmorpg.com is going to put in a forum for Copernicus?

If they are going to buy any licensing from TSR i hope it is for the world of Greyhawk. I always loved that map.
Frankly, I wish big studios would give up on traditional swords and sorcery. Blizzard has won that war.
Give us WoW-like polish and content density in another theme.

Heh, maybe they made both and bought the license to Ravenloft from white wolf? I would love to see Mc fairline do the art for that. Ravenloft would actually make a solid MMO.
And Rob Zombie is great BTW

I doubt that. The old Forgotten Realms is dead in Wizards of the Coast's view and thus they wouldn't license it out, kind of like how White Wolf view it's older WoD/Vampire: The Masquerade material. I doubt Wizards would give access to the new Forgotten Realms with as much talk about Atari and Cryptic's secret project being 4th ed D&D related.
Sadly I don't think we'll ever see one of the D&D campaign settings brought to life via an MMO in a replication of the setting manner. That said, I believe Salvatore has been influenced positively by his years writing for FR and hopefully he has embraced Dungeon Master style world building in those years. We sure could use some of that style of MMO creation in this genre.

Atari have put Cryptic on making an MMO version of Neverwinter nights, that is confirmed by several sources. But Atari is in financial problems, not sure if they can split the license or something. They might even be forced to sell it anyways, or lose it to Hasbro in a lawsuit.
So everything is possible even though I agree that it isn't likely.

Meh. I don't look at it so much in terms of winning a war as providing enough choice within a subset to satisfy demand. There is a demand for a modern (modern meaning making use of today's tech) more "serious" swords and sorcery game that is, and here's the key, put together well and well-rounded. I guess my example would be the Forgotten Realms made in a "traditional" open world style and not the 4 toughness level dungeon crawler that DDO is.
But yeah, I'm also a proponent for more Sci-Fi and Modern era MMOs too.

I took an interest in this game when i first heard it was Mr.Schilling.For once a gamer and not just a developer looking to make a buck.
I think what will make or break this game is Schilling's input and thought process. If he is nothing more than a financial backer because he always had a vision, then the game is doomed. If he got involved in this game because he truly wants to put his mark on a creative game, then it may have a ton of potential.
There is a good reason why SOE hired that guy from Sigil who came up with the Diplomacy idea in Vanguard,it is because creativity amongst developers is at an incredible low.We have the most subbed MMPRPG game on the planet and it has some of the least creative ideas on the planet,it really is a wonder why people are playing it.
The Copernicus game carries two key figures that could very well make or break the game. The one guy w/o mentioning his name ,seems to be in charge,he is the Schilling estate handler,he makes their decisions basically for them.He seems to be making the decisions on what he feels is fun and what makes it into the game. The next guy i figure is sort of the lead guy is a former Everquest guy,so i feel this game may very well have an Everquest feel to it.
I get the feeling the guy in charge,is not going to be very creative, just by the way he decides what players find fun or not, this tells me it is going to be a clone/copy of already used ideas. As soon as i hear something like that i feel,he is going to be another guy that says look at WOW, they have the most subs because players find that fun. This could mean nothing more than boring quests to level along, and instances to grab your loot, both of witch i do not like.nor is it very creative.
My take on the end product?? A game that looks like Everquest but plays like WOW,nothing creative no game breaking ideas.I believe by looking at their staff, the game is going to have some nice animations some nice effects, some good story writing, but it all comes down to the reason you login ,we will have to wait and see if it is another WOW clone or not.It could be the nicest looking game, best effects /animations but if i have to run from NPC to NPC doing meaningless simple quests to hold my hand through leveling, then it won't be for me.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
I just hope the game is a world and not a stage play. Talk of "story" makes me nervous; makes me recall being trapped in tutorials and linear questlines while listening to a Lich King ramble on for 5 minutes.
Let's hope it is a "free range" world.
