I want to see a 4E dnd game mmorpg. There seem to be hints that Cryptic is making one. Not sure if they will lose the dnd rights, or use 3E, or if the Mayan Gods will eat the sun in 2012. But I would like to see the game made.
Why would Atari lose its rights to D&D? I've never played it but,I always thought the game was pretty succesful.
^ that made no sense. Atari is a publisher. Are you thinking of DDO? Basically right now Atari is in some legal trouble with Hasbro (who owns the D&D franchise at the moment).
I play CoH and CoV, CO, and STO(beta). Yea, I can say Cryptic releases games before they are ready...but...it is not always the developers fault. I assume whomever pays the millions of dollars up front can force the developers to release the games early.
I really like the style of Cryptic games. Hopefully if they are making a dnd game it will have a smooth release full of game content.

They wont. The only style one actually link to cryptic is the comic book style, which is exactly counter to that of a D&D style. They have been bought out, and even worse people like Bill Roper are working there now.

So when is the Forgotten Realms mmorpg by Cryptic going to be announced?
All I can say is IF they are working on a "Forgotten Realms" campaign, they need to hurry up before people have forgotten all about what "Forgotten Realms" really was. "FR" was popular in the 1980's when D&D was at its peak, but newer gamers will have no clue what it is about.

You do realize that NO ONE likes 4E, right?
Wouldn't say no-one, it's a lot more newbie-friendly than 3ed was. But I'm yet to meet a veteran D&D player that liked it, yeah.
The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.

Actually, you've made me remember one of the more positive things about 4E. If you're an MMO player and want to try out a PNP game... Give 4E a shot. They've altered the DND formula to make it more MMO-ish (More specifically, they made the holy trinity more prevalent. Dwarven Defenders and Clerics became REALLY important in a large portion of Official Modules).
I am a veteran dnd player (ughh..I am 43 years old now!) and I like 4E. Personally I think many people just do not give new games a fair chance. if 4E was the 'old' dnd, people would just trash 3E if it was the 'new game on the block'
Plenty of people like 4E. Or are the players in my games phantoms? But seriously, I happen to prefer 4E over 3E quite a bit.
4E has some balance; 3E is a mess. I also like City of Heroes a lot, so cryptic is just fine to make the computer mmorpg version game in my opinion.
Atari will very soon loose all the rights to D&D (about time already) , and you dont really wish for Cryptic to even walk near the room where name D&D is spoken.
You may feel that way, but I sure do not. City of Heroes is one of my favorite mmorpg's, so I am quite pleased to see cryptic making the dnd game. Funcom would have been good too. Age of Conan is very dndish in my opinion.
Never Atari will very soon loose all the rights to D&D (about time already) , and you dont really wish for Cryptic to even walk near the room where name D&D is spoken.
Wrong know several folks at WotC they and Atari are working out there differences out of court if you looked at the last STOked video where the Cryptic guys is being interveiwed there is a shit ton of D&D books on his desk, from what I am told we should hear the announcement of FR Online somtimes in June.
I really hope it is not Cryptic. This is probably the most anticipated IP to go MMORPG since... well I don't know, since LOTRO or Star Wars I guess.
Of all the developers out there, I would want Turbine to make it. I think they would do a fantastic job. I certainly wouldn't want a LOTRO clone, nor a DDO clone, but they have already implemented a very modified D&D ruleset into a MMO, so that gives them a good start at least.. Not to mention having worked with WOTC. Plus their graphics look badass, using DX10, DX11... cutting edge stuff.
I would be seriously dissapointed if it wasn't turbine actually. I would still play it just because Forgotten Realms and the D&D ruleset spells skills etc... is so freakin awesome.
So when is the Forgotten Realms mmorpg by Cryptic going to be announced?

You really think that people allready forgotten Baldurs Gate 1 and 2, Icewind Dale 1 and 2, Neverwinter nights 1 and 2?
Well this is all speculation at this point. It will continue to be so until an official announcement is made. Of course everyone has likes and dislikes in the realm of D&D. I personaly dislike the rule sets past 2nd edition. I've played for too many years to count. (in my 40's now) and I've experienced most of the D&D games out there. From simple muds to DDO. Imho, DDO is an epic failure. A fully instanced game is a waste of space. Clearly if it was a good model Blizzard would adopt it for warcraft. I'm not advocating for warcraft, I don't like it either. However it is undeniable that Blizzard has THE most successful model for a mmorpg. Everquest of which I'm a fan, though not large enough to play it anymore, has a very successful world as well and still has a respectable following. DDO has some nice mechanics with rogues being essential to survival later on with the trap setup.
Guess it comes down to this. Doesn't matter who designs it, someone is going to be disappointed with some aspect. Would I love to see an FR mmorpg? Definitly. It's puzzled me since EQ's inception, why no one at WoTC said "Hey that's a great idea for FR!" I never embraced Ebberon, and no one I know or play/played with has ever embraced it. Consider for one moment that you could steal 20% of the subscriber base from warcraft. Where's that put you? In the friendly realm of 2 milion subscribers?
More that worth any time involved. Multiply that by 50$ for the game initially, and then again by 15$ per month, or even 12$. The math all adds up to a highly profitable venture. All the design work is done. The world is created, it's just a matter of moving from paper to code. The expansions exist. From FR, to Krynn, to Greyhawk, to Ravenloft. Never a fan of spelljammer, none the less it's available. Ahh well, those are my thoughts. I'm waiting for Bioware to release The Old Republic. Peace is a lie, there is only passion.

That's because 4E has everything down to a die roll, and not really much room for role-playing. That's why I refuse to use the ruleset for any pen and paper gaming I do. That being said, the system is very much like a computer game. I could see the ruleset working much better than 3e did in a MMO system. Just because it is a horrible pen and paper game doesn't exclude it from being good in a video game. Personally I have been using Pathfinder rules ever since 4e came out. I love the system, but I understand it wouldn't work well in a video game setting.

My friends and I called it "roll"-playing instead of role-playing.
I personally would like to wait and see how TOR is. If Bioware does a bang-up job with TOR then I think they should work an FR one (they made BG1 and 2, IWD 1 and 2 and NWN). I think that they know the IP well enough.
I did not care for Turbine's DDO at all. Instanced Dungeons and Dragons, where is the fun in that? I think that if anything the way to do a FRO would be to make the world open but with instanced dungeons. I think that an ORPG would work better than an MMO of the realms.

Neverwinter Nights 2 Platinum is at position 8th out of 10 of the top sellers in the Steam Store. 2 Positions before DCUO.

@Bill : Cryptic's ability to make good mmorpgs has diminished considerably since their CoH and CoV titles.

1. If there is a Forgotten Realms MMO I hope that it is Turbine that makes it. Cryptics style would no mexh wel with D&D
2. If this does happen, I hope they use 3rd edition rules. 4'th edition was a horrible implementation.

It isnt officially a 'MMORPG' though, due to Turbine's action against Atari... it's being sold as a 'co-op RPG'.
Yea this was announced bout 3 months ago , and for all the heat that Cryptic takes (deservingly so) this is one i think they will get right ...
And yea it is Coop game not MMO , more along the hub style of GW...
