Earthrise Release date DELAYED!

Just to clear up some confusion and to hopefully help people that don't know about this.

We have made great strides in these last few months, but in order to ensure that we are releasing the game that we've promised our fans, we are looking towards the second quarter of 2010 for the launch of Earthrise. When we began working on Earthrise we set out to make a unique and extraordinary game; we don't want to deliver anything less than that to our dedicated community.

Bummer. This is one of the few upcoming MMOs that's got me interested. First MO has a slight delay and now Earthrise. Oh well, Darkfall has my interest for now and I'm enjoying it.

Hopefully I can still get in on the closed beta for Earthrise before launch.

    Current: None
Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN

I think this is for the better though right? Gives them more time to polish and have a smoother release. Wouldn't it be nice to actually have an MMO to have a smooth launch for once?

No doubt. A smooth launch would be great. The best launch I've been a part of was LotRO. The devs can take as much time as needed to polish Earthrise, but I'm still bummed it's been delayed.

I dont mind a game being delayed as long as they are looking at issues to resolve b4 a launch or adding some great content.

All my opinions are just that..opinions. If you like my opinions..coolness.If you dont like my opinion....I really dont care.

To put it another way: Masthead is overchallenged with this project and Earthrise sucks.

Or maybe they improved and changed some of the core mechanics to make the game better? So instead of releasing those new mechanics less polished then the rest of the game, they are delaying the release in order to get those mechanics up to par with the rest of the game.

Earthrise community has always been supportive to MHS and there are some dire hard members that have been around since the game was announced. They stuck around even when there was little to nothing to talk about or being released. I am one of them and I am happy that Masthead Studios is delaying the game in order to give the community they game that we have been waiting for. It is the least that any MMO company can do for it community.

Edit: BTW one of those core mechanics that were changed was the combat mechanics. Which is really going to be make or break for about 70% of Earthrise players. So yeah I really hope they take as much time as possible to improve.

Why arn't they releasing any new information on these changes?

I'm talking game play videos, not a text that says "This game will suit all types of players blablabla..."

Yeah this is not a bad thing at all. I would rather they take the time that is needed to make the game right...

We are expecting a new gameplay video sometime within this month or "soon". We do not really know yet. There is also an upcoming interview that was made up by the Earthrise community that have some really unique questions, which should be released sometime by the end of the month or the start of the next month. There is a lot of fun and exciting stuff to be released (or so we are told).

Edit: you also have to remember this is a Indie company and such they can't make mistakes releasing poor gameplay videos or release so much information. It will hurt there image or hurt the game. So I understand if they do not want to release videos.

They are also developing Fallout Online for Interplay................so that might be one of the reason for the delay

I personally highly doubt that has anything to do with the delay, they have said that their main focus will be Earthrise and will not hinder the progress of Earthrise. So, I am skeptical at how much them helping Interplay with the Fallout Online is true. It would be interesting to hear news from Masthead Studios concerning the Fallout mmo and how much they are committed to that..  Sorry, got off topic.

I also wonder what kind of financial status is Masthead Studios in. An indie company delaying an extra 6 month is huge and is very rarely done even by the larger companies. Man what I would do to become a share holder...

Well, they aren't doing the whole game. I think it's mainly to use the tools Masthead developed to build Earthrise (link).  And supposedly devs will only move over to V13 once their work on Earthrise is done (link). Masthead promises no delays due to V13. Now, whether that's true or not is of course another matter. But after the feedback given on the first videos which resulted in the decision to overhaul the combat system, I'm not really surprised that there's a delay.

A 6 month delay isn't uncommon at all. I mean look at Darkfall, it took 8 years to get out the door. As for financially, if nothing else, we know they now have extra cash from Interplay.

A new video has been promised sometime this month. No sign of it yet though.

Not really.. Darkfall did hit rock bottom and everyone knows that. We also know that they were having financial problems when they released the game. Hence why the game was not polished and for very rocky start. No company takes 8 years and says that they did not have financial issues. The only company that I know that can say that with ease is Blizzard.

This however is hopefully different. I am hoping that they can make this delay and still have financial support for an extra delay or extra servers or whatever is needed. I am trying to talk about delaying a game and at the end of the delay not be forced to release. Also if I remember correctly Earthrise has been in development for almost 6 years or maybe it has been 6 years.

So it is rare for an Indie company to delay a game and still not be forced to release the game.

I just don't think a delay is anything to get worked up over, especially for an MMO. In fact, I think delays are the norm, and in this case, completely expected since they announced they were changing a major part of the game. Maybe Masthead is just better at keeping things under wraps, but I'm not seeing any of the flailing one would expect of indie in financial trouble. I think somehow they've managed to get a solid investor base. Again, their deal with Interplay shows they already have something of value. If Interplay liked the development tools they made enough to hire them on to V13, then maybe those tools are good enough that they could make some income just from that.

Yes, I know this already Harabeck and I am not stating that MHS is having financial troubles or getting worked up about Earthirse being delayed.

6 month delay is not a norm. If delaying a game for more then 6 months or more was the norm I would think that there would be more polished games being released. However that has not been the case last year and everything has been rushed out to bring in the money.

I however was not stating this to make it seem like masthead is having financial troubles. I only stated that I wanted to know Masthead Studios financial status and who is funding them because investors do not take kindly to delays as that is only more money out of their wallets.

  • HarabeckHarabeck Member Posts: 616

Actually delays tend to not really produce more polished games. Warhammer was delayed by at least 6 months (or maybe more in total), and they ended up with less content than they had promised originally (namely they cut 4 major cities and two classes). Just googling "mmo release delays" pulls up at least 5 more mmo's that had delays. I think the only time a game doesn't have a delay is when the devs don't give a firm release date until they're near completion.

Bethesda sued Interplay because they started to work on V13 1 day before the deadline, and Masthead is the studio who got the job.

If Interplay has to keep the rights for Darkfall Online they need to show to the court that some work has been done, therefore I guess Masthead are under pressure to deliver some kind of working demo, or Interplay will lose the rights.

Interplay has their own studio working on the project as well. I got the impression from the announcement that the deal with Masthead is mostly for use of the Earthrise engine and dev tools.
