RealmLords now in extended Open Beta

EDIT: RealmLords is now in extended Open Beta (see notice at bottom of thread)

www.RealmLords.com

RealmLords has published a release designed for early adopters.

Server is live 24/7, content is mostly in place.  World is somewhat rough and incomplete, but relatively bug-free.

Gameplay is best described as 'Action MMORPG' with PVE and RvR combat, many dungeons for groups (trinity or zerg), no instances, deep crafting, and very little emphasis on quests.

The game is fully Free To Play with no limitation other than FTP players are not eligible for player housing (currently under construction anyway).

Patches will be done daily as needed, but only late night (CST) except in case of an urgent "fix" that cannot wait.

Info and client is at:  www.RealmLords.com

Thanks,

Ken Fisher

P.S.   RealmLords is not currently listed on MMORPG.com.  I wanted to be fully sure the game would release prior to publishing details.  I dislike vaporware games as much as the next guy.

It seems to be made by the realm crafter software(i think it's the name) but realm builder does sound right. OH well either way it's not that important. The game's artistic style does seem to take that level of detail though.

Not saying that they're game won't be great. Just the graphics seem to be at that level of gameplay. I hope it's not made by that or they truly do make a simply amazing game as a good mmo is rare to come by.

  • johnmatthaisjohnmatthais Member CommonPosts: 2,663

Not even close, guys. It's made in Torque Game Engine and uses the Minions of Mirth development package.

Also, Ken, a monthly player housing fee kind of like Second Life (a modest one of course) might work better than a full monthly fee just to get that. Not many people are going to pay solely for housing if they think it's a monthly playing fee.

  • RealmLordsRealmLords Member Posts: 358

    Yep TGE +Prairie Games' kit.

Housing does sound better than sub.  Whatever direction, I do want to set a very clear and honest "free" for the free to play.

So is this a open beta kind of thing or are you fully released now?

I'm pretty sure it's getting released slowly. First the early adopter release (a specific group of people if I'm not mistaken) and then a full release.

Don't quote me on it though. The download seems to be up.

EDIT: (from download page) RELEASE 1.001

    That answer it?

  • RealmLordsRealmLords Member Posts: 358

Pretty much like an open beta.

No premium* is offered yet.  Still working on endgame content and player housing.  Also, working on class skills based on player feedback.  Some quest issues are still being worked out too.

... but it's mostly bug-free, client is up for download, and I'm only patching once a day (late night) so it's almost up 24/7.

    Ken

    * premium is still up in the air.  Not doing a monthly fee, and no cash shop to buy gear either.  I want free to really mean free, and then maybe offer housing and other stuff on the side later to generate some revenue.  I'm not really worried about cash as much as trying to make the game enjoyable.

Sweet, thanks for clearing that up. I'll check it out tomrw for sure!

Btw just out of curiosity, are you planning on keeping a low profile and just get players by word of mouth or will you be doing all the dev interviews, advertisements, giveaway type of things to build some hype? I ask because i would suggest you look at how alganon devs marketed, ALOT of interviews with various sites, exclusive screenshot giveaways to keep their name shown oftenly, give beta keys to websites all over and just little things that really add up.

Man i don't know, there has never been a F2P that is any better quality than just that F2P.I just tried that player hyped up ALLODS and i fell asleep playing, and very low end graphics.I can't trust anyone's opinion of games anymore, they talk like a game is a 9/10,then i get in there it is barely a 3/10.

I do not want to play a game that is all about leveling and doing quests,i have done that far more than i care and i am incredibly bored of doing that.I want to see challenging combat and some unique ideas.

To put it into perspective ,i imagine i have played 200 online games by now.Do you know how many go fetch me 10 venison meat or 10 bear claw quests i have done?Thousands,i am totally sick of that boring game play. Also the level of ease is pathetic in games,it is like they are catered to make sure that a person with a 25 IQ and/or at the age of 5-12 can handle it with ease.I want something more complex.

Also you know how many games,i start out with that hotbar and the 1-3 icons that are really meaningless, because they all do the same thing, they just have different names. So it is like i am playing the exact same games over and over and over just with a different skin,VERY boring at this stage.

I don't even read icons anymore,i just glance at them and see witch one does the dps and witch one heals, then i just button mash until the mob is dead,i could do combat blindfolded,it is that bad.

If this game is the exact same thing all over again,i am sorry but i am not interested. If there is something there  that might interest me then i might check it out,but ALLODS has me bummed out in hopes of finding a very good game to take over for my 1 year absence from FFXI.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

At the moment, hype is my worst enemy.  Even allowing for the intentionally scaled back design, the game is at about 85% completion based on what I'd consider acceptable standards.   By the middle of January I'm hoping to have it much more polished.  This is full-time for me at the moment, and I'm no stranger to 100 hour work weeks.  So for now, word of mouth and a listing here on MMORPG.com is what I'm comfortable with.  More exposure later would be cool, if the game deserves it.

Another side to this is that even once the game is top-shelf to my capabilities, it's still way sub-standard to anything AAA or even mid-budget.  I'm fine with having people play it if its something they like, but it's not like "ZOMG this game is too perfect!"  Some people will like it, most will blow it off because it's not sanboxy or themeparkish enough.  I'm okay with that.

I'll have to look it up.  It's a public domain recording, yes classical.  There's a web site that has tons of it available (properly licensed), and the performances are fantastic.  I'm only a fan... what is the expression... I don't know the music, but I know what I like.  I wasn't even 10 minutes of looking through these, and when I heard it, I knew that was what I wanted.

    @ Wizardry:

I don't think RealmLords sets anything really new into MMO gameplay other than it's a bastard mix from several different styles of play.  Combat is still button mashing, quests can be completely ignored (group or solo dungeons are the best XP and loot), and for the most part the full game is a giant gear grind mixed with a fairly deep crafting system.

The RvR has a decent potential (in my opinion) but its going to take a while to get population up to the point where when you raid the other guys territory, that there are actually other guys there to defend it.

Probably the only things that are really different are:

    1. I don't use ANY level spread fudging for combat, at all.  It's pure stats.  I had a level 25 in decent gear and who knew how to play (button mash and appropriately timed heals) drop a level 65 in PVE.  I'm dying to see some real PVP players battle it out.

    2.  The game supports not punishes mixed grouping.  a level 50 35 and 12 in a level 40 dungeon?  No problem.  The 12 is not an aggro magnet and gets an even share of XP.  It's a great way to power-level up a guildie and its a lot more fun than telling a friend that he's too low to group with.

... at least those are two things that I think are pretty cool about it.

Am currently experiencing some technical difficulties with launching the game, after I finished installing it. Black screen for a couple of seconds and then I get returned to the desktop.

Don't know if it has anything to do with the fact that after installation it displayed a message stating that my direct x version is too old for the game, sending me to the microsoft website presumably for an update, which proved the game wrong, my direct x is up to date.

Any suggestions would be appreciated :)

It might be a missing MSVC runtime: realmlords.com/additional_downloads.html

The engine is based on OpenGL for the 3D, but does used DirectX to get the hooks to the Windows interface.  This sometimes has issues depending on the combination of drivers and OS. Also, resolution is sometimes a problem, along with multi-monitor setups.

    c:games
ealmlordsin has a text file console.log.  That should tell you if OpenGL failed to init.

Here's a clip (below) from mine on my laptop, showing video getting identified and initialized. Failing here is a likely problem.

Strange enough, today, when i started my pc and clicked the game exe, game launched perfectly, was able to begin patching...until screen saver popped up with the black background and the windows logo up front.

When I moved my mouse around the application failed, black screen again and could no longer relaunch the game.

I did what you said and here are the last lines of the console.log:

    @ osdrag

    No clue on this one.

The isTMKenabled line before that is left over from my removing "Torque Modernization Kit" from the game due to performance issues.  Last significant line is "engine initialized..." which is normal.

The text after this, the "out of bins" stuff is part of the emergency shutdown in the engine.

I'd say a compatibility bug, but that's just a guess at this point.  Very likely modern video card, OS and drivers, meets old engine and says "WTF?"

If you don't mind the time.  Can you PM me here on MMORPG.com with the OS and video card your running?  Include anything unusual like a multi-monitor setup etc.  I like to track these so I can ID problems.

Sorry for the hassle, and thanks for the report.

If it won't let you in to register, yes... very likely the server was down for patch.  I normally do this at around 2:00 AM Central Time (USA).

The most common failure isn't registration, but entering the 3D world.  The engine's networking layer doesn't get along well with modern NAT routers and/or firewalls.  If you can get registered, but can't get into the world, that's when you need to look into port forwarding (aka NAT traversal of UDP packets).  That used to be a nightmare, but I've simplified it so there's one rule:  Any UDP packet coming to the router from the Internet on port 51337 gets forwarded to your game machine (also 51337).

Shout if I can be of any help,

Something you might think about doing (its really easy to do with the Torque Engine) is on the patch downloading screen include a area that can display a html file. Then link it to your website and toss up your patch notes on that html file. This way everytime someone get the patching screen they can see the patch notes and we all can see what type of changes / fixs / additions you are making to the game.

If you need some help doing that just let me know and I can shoot you an example or point you in the right direction. It's fairly basic and last I checked could be done in like 5 mins of time.

So far though you have a nice start of a game. I might suggest you slow down combat a little bit as right now it seems way to fast. The rats do alot of little hits for not much damage. Better thing might be for them to do slightly more damage but hit at a slower speed. Fast paced combat is good but it needs to be at a speed that players can react to attacks and such.

Other then that its a good start. You have a ways to go but its getting there.. I'll cya ingame! If you need any help with dif models let me know and I would be more then glad to help you out. I may not be the best artest or the best with Constructor but I do have 7 years of experience with it.

I wouldn't bank on that being an indication of 'proven'. Even a seemingly insignificant violation is worth pursuing if for no other reason other than establishing a history of diligence. It's much more plausible that they haven't even heard of it than that they are allowing it.

It doesn't cost you anything to use a term other than RvR, and it may save you a lot of hassle and expense in the future.

RVR is not the term Mythic has Trademarked. There term is exactly Realm VS. Realm   nothing more or nothing less. You can legally use the term Realm vs Realm without getting into issues as long as you do not put the period after the VS.  This is why in all of Mythics / EA's press releases its worded exactly like that.

The full term Realm versus Realm can not be trademarked as its a general term that simply implys two sides fighting ageanst one another. Something that has been used long long before Mythic brought it to the table.

    Here is the exact trademark.

    http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=doc&state=4003:ivttkm.4.1

So in this context you are safe to use it as you are. So are the other 50+ games using the term.
