It's run by Codemasters and not Turbine. They didn't believe going into F2P model is any good (and I believe will show as a good move over time). DDo lately dropped to the same level of activity on xfire as it was before F2P and portion of it are now free-players.

Are you sure about that? I seem to recall before DDO:EU the X-fire numbers were around 400 hours per day, not around 4,000 like they are now. Not sure how to go back that far with their charts though.

Good old Thillian up to his old tricks ;)

DDO was about #180 on Xfire before Unlimited, then it increased to #25 and have now dropped to #40 which isnt too bad! Turbine have already stated that VIP subscribers increased with 40% since going F2P and that is not counting Free or premium players.

Also note that Atari is involved in this and they still have rights to distribute DDO in Europe and since Turbine and Atari is in a legal battle its probably Atari who is preventing F2P here since they have every reason to want the game to fail :(

    If WoW = The Beatles
    and WAR = Led Zeppelin
    Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

European player here. That's not the reason, The actual reason why Europe do not have DDO:Unlimited (F2P, shope, etc) is due to the lawsuit between Atari and Turbine. Atari still has the publishing rights for DDO in europe unlike the US. Unfortunately CM can't talk about it while the lawsuit is open..  In actual fact  Codemasters appear to be keen for F2P in Europe - see this post by CM here.

    Now today we read

    Hasbro are also suing Atari

for breach of D&D license- it's a mess and I don't expect a fast resolution.

I still have my sub open in Europe having been there for 3.5 years and it's quiet but it's a close community. Kind of like being in a small village :)

    Hi Agg

That is my understanding as well.

I have been busy with RL but the times I have managed to make it online, the population is okay, not great but it could be worse.

All right I'm sorry about the Atari thing. I read on EU official forums a few months before US went F2P from one of the moderators, that Codemasters might go F2P as well when they see fit.

DDo before Unlimited was anywhere between 60th-80th place. It's now 50-60th, dropping from top 20. (it's around 3100 hours played atm, in compare to around 2000-2500 before turning F2P). I'm not sure where from you got the 180th, that's where Darkfall and Fallen Earth are and they are rumoured to have 20k subs (50-60th place is around 100k) which would equal to previous DDo 70-80k subscribers.

Sure I might be very wrong here, because I do put a lot of importance on Xfire figures, and I check it basically every day (glad to see AoC settled up in above WAR with rank around 55th place).

DDO was rumored to be around 25k or so subs prior to F2P.

But you might have issues with Turbine accepting a credit card from Europe, like i had.

And without buying anything at all, the game might be a bit boring for you. It was for me at least.
